PUMPS TO THE RESCUEPutzmeister Boom Pumps Cool Nuclear ReactorsAs the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March evolved into a massive effort to contain the damaged nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, Putzmeister America has been part of a global effort to help.
Putzmeister America, along with German parent company, Putzmeister Concrete Pumps GmbH (PCP), and the Putzmeister subsidiary in Japan, worked together to send two 70Z-Meter concrete boom pumps – the world’s largest, and two 62-Meter boom pumps, to join a 58-Meter already pumping water to cool Fukushima’s nuclear reactor No. 4. The two 70Zs were sent from America, and the two 62Ms from Germany.
The IdeaThe idea to use concrete boom pumps to cool the reactor was spearheaded by Hiroshi Suzuki, head of Putzmeister’s Japan subsidiary. On March 15, Suzuki submitted information to the prime minister’s office about the boom pump’s capabilities and how they could help. Two days later, he received an emergency order to bring ashore a Putzmeister 58-Meter that had been en route to a customer in Vietnam.
The 58-Meter arrived on site on March 21; and the next day, after receiving training from Suzuki on how to operate the equipment, 12 workers pumped 150 tons of seawater into the reactor’s spent-fuel pool in three hours.
Upon seeing successful results, Putzmeister America and PCP put together a proposal for four additional concrete boom pumps.
Why the Idea WorksPutzmeister boom pumps were the ideal solution in helping battle this catastrophe because of the pin-point accuracy of each unit’s boom to feed water over the destroyed buildings to the exact place of the hotspots within the reactors.
The three different Putzmeister boom pump sizes (58-, 62- and 70Z-Meter) offer the long reaches required, and their versatile boom articulations have the maneuverability to reach exactly where needed to apply the water.
Additionally, the output of each boom pump is 210 cubic yards per hour, equivalent to about 42,000 gallons per hour of water. In comparison, a standard fire truck’s output averages about 16,000 gallons per hour.
Plus, the unit’s proportional radio remote controls allows operators to safely remain 1.20 miles away from the reactor building while operating the boom pump.
Getting the Pumps to JapanTwo Putzmeister customers – Mike Parigini of Associated Concrete Pumping in Sacramento, California, and Jerry Ashmore of Ashmore Concrete Contractors, Inc. in Evans, Georgia – recognized their 70Z-Meter units had the capabilities needed for the cooling operations and generously offered their pumps.

PUTZMEISTER IN THE NEWS
P re s iden t and CEO
PRESIDENT’SMessage
Like many people all over the world, our thoughts have been with the people of Japan as they deal with the unprecedented nuclear crisis.
Fortunately, we have the equipment that can help cool Japan’s nuclear reactors; so Putzmeister America, along with Putzmeister in Germany and Japan moved full speed ahead to send our boom pumps to Japan to help sustain the effort.
In the spirit of helping others in need, our customers offered their 70Z-Meter pumps to help prevent a more serious situation from occurring in Japan. Plus, several dedicated Putzmeister employees went the extra mile to prep the equipment, and schedule the long flights to Japan. It was an unusual process that took great organizational skills. Plus, various employees made the exhausting trip to Japan to put the units in-service upon their arrival, as well as train personnel how to operate the large boom pumps. These extra efforts and personal dedication to help others speaks volume about the people in the Putzmeister organization.
The people in Japan were extremely gracious and grateful for the help, and eagerly learned how to operate the equipment, as well as thanked us for our quick response. All of us are proud to have helped with the crisis, of which the cooling reactor process continues at the time of this writing.
Putzmeister is no stranger to nuclear power plants in crisis and other disasters. During the Chernobyl situation in 1986, Putzmeister sent 11 boom pumps to help place con-crete that entombed a reactor, thereby preventing additional radiation from being emitted. Also, for more than 25 years, Putzmeister concrete pumps have been used in fire-fighting operations with a spray nozzle retrofit.

Ashmore’s 70Z (above) was being used on a long-term project, but the company immediately pulled the boom pump off the job to help the serious situation in Japan.
Before the 70Zs left America, a team of Putzmeister personnel prepped the units in California and South Carolina. This included Field Service Technicians Alan Woods and Travis Nonn; and Southwest Regional Sales Manager Gary Schmidt.
Putzmeister America President and CEO Dave Adams along with Woods, Nonn and Schmidt accompanied the pumps to the Putzmeister subsidiary in Chiba, Japan—just east of Tokyo. Once there, they provided operation and maintenance training to the power plant operators to ensure they were comfortable operating the massive boom pumps.
The two 62-Meters from PCP were flown to Japan on cargo jets as well. The first one arrived in Japan on April 1, and was outfitted with a camera, sensor and water sampling tool, which allowed the first view inside the nuclear reactors and vital sampling of the water pooling up in the reactor. It has since replaced the 58-Meter. The second 62-Meter arrived at the power plant on May 16.
Since the effort with the boom pumps began, three 52-Meters have been utilized, all owned by Putzmeister Japan customers. One has remained in Chiba for training of additional operators; a second is a backup, which has not yet been needed; and the third has done some water pumping at Fukushima.
Although the intended use for the boom pumps is to spray water to cool the reactors, it is possible they may also be used to entomb the reactors in concrete.

Recognizing Excellence
With upcoming construction projects on their minds, many Putzmeister customers, distributors and employees spent time in Las Vegas, Nevada, earlier this year. Both the World of Concrete held in January, and CONEXPO-CON/AGG held in March, showcased the best the industry has to offer.
While a smaller show than in years past, Putzmeister did not disappoint at The World of Concrete. Showcasing their wide array of equipment offerings, Putzmeister, Allentown and Esser had everything from mortar
machines and trailer pumps, to a boom pump and Telebelt®. Esser pipe was featured both on the equipment and display racks.
Our booth at CONEXPO-CON/AGG was jam-packed with visitors and job-site-ready equipment displays. Both the recently engineered MX TB placing conveyor and semi-trailer Telebelt made their U.S. debut at the show. Not to be overlooked, Putzmeister high quality parts, accessories and Esser pipe were featured throughout the booth.
We look forward to seeing you at WOC 2012, in Las Vegas, January 24–27.

Enhancing the Telebelt® line, Putzmeister showcased the first-ever MX TB placing conveyor at CONEXPO-CON/AGG. The innovative placing conveyor was specially designed as the final step in an overland conveyor system. It is ideal for large, civil projects that require mass placement of large aggregate, near zero slump concrete. Examples of these high volume projects include dams and hydroelectric powerhouses as well as coal and nuclear power plants.
The two new models are the MX TB 130 and MX TB 600, with the same reliable booms as our truck-mounted TB 130 and TB 600 models.
Components for both MX TB systems include a pedestal that mounts to a square lattice tower. The tower can be mounted in either freestanding or ballasted base configurations, similar to placing booms.
Conveying innovation
Putzmeister introduces its new Telebelt® TB 200―a feature-rich telescopic belt conveyor that outmaneuvers, outdrives and outperforms other competitive placing systems used for a broad range of high volume applications.
The new model features an advanced boom design with less weight, more strength and a superior working range to avoid moving the conveyor on-site as often. Reducing transport costs, the road-legal chassis can be driven to the next job site; while the rest of the Telebelt is transported via a flatbed. Powered by two separate engines to perform different operations, the TB 200 uses hydraulic drive
to pull power from the engine at varying rates for better fuel efficiency. Plus, remote control of the hydraulic belt speed can be quickly adjusted remotely and on-the-fly to meet changing job site needs. Its counterweight is a structural element of the unit, that moves proportionally in and out as the boom extends and retracts.
