A linear walk along the largely urbanised coast between Matagorda, at the eastern end of Puerto del Carmen, and Arrecife. The route is always close to the sea, passing along the side of the airport, which adds interest, and behind several beaches. Very easy walking, level and almost entirely on paved promenade. The excellent bus service - Costa Teguise/Arrecife/Puerto del Carmen - is used for the return to Matagorda.

Alternatively, from the stop close to Santa Rosa, the bus can be used for the outward journey to Matagorda, with the return to Santa Rosa from Arrecife enabling a totally car-free excursion.

Note: It would be a great help to future walkers if you could record any inaccuracies you come across during this walk and report them to reception so that appropriate amendments can be made. Thank you for your help. Happy walking.

Start/car parking: At the roadside between the roundabout and the sea front on the western side of the Matagorda development.

If using the bus from Santa Rosa, alight at the first stop in Matagorda, a short distance before reaching a large roundabout.

Refreshments: Several sea front bars/cafés at Playa Honda

From either the bus stop or the roadside parking place, head for the sea front at Matagorda. From the bus stop by the roundabout then pass a large hotel on the left.

1. Turn left along the traffic-free sea front promenade. There is a ‘Matagorda Urbanisation’ sign. Pass the Hotel Beatriz Playa and continue behind a gritty beach. The tower block of the Grand Hotel at Arrecife can be seen in the far distance. Go round the Punta Montanosa, close to the end of the airport runway; the security fence is now close on the left. To the right is the extensive Playa de Guasimeta. Reach the far end of the airport and the resort of Playa Honda, where several cafés/bars, are well placed for refreshment along the promenade Avenida Playa Honda.

2. Pass behind the little bay La Concha, where there is an option to save a little distance by using a track which cuts the roughish back of beach area. Pass inland of the El Cable yacht club and continue along a broad promenade now obviously much closer to our destination of Arrecife. Pass a car park on the left and an unusual domed structure before reaching attractive municipal gardens, equipped with various leisure facilities.

3. At the far end of the gardens turn sharp left by a monument comprising the remains of a traditional boat. The main Arrecife beach, Playa del Reducto is on the right.

The bus station is found at the end of this roadway, on the left, a new steel construction where a return bus to Puerto del Carmen (Matagorda) Costa Teguise can be caught.
