Celebrando el Cinco de Mayo

“Wake up, Frida! At last it’s May fifth!” Emiliano shouted. Frida and Emiliano were born in the United States but their grandparents were born in the state of Puebla in Mexico, which is the reason why Cinco de Mayo is a very important day for the whole family.

“¡Despiértate Frida! ¡Al fin es el cinco de mayo!” gritó Emiliano. Frida y Emiliano nacieron en los Estados Unidos pero sus abuelos nacieron en el estado de Puebla en México y esa es la razón por lo cual el Cinco de Mayo es un día muy importante para toda la familia.

“Mom, where is my General Ignacio Zaragoza suit?” Emiliano asked. “It’s in the closet,” Mom answered. “Hurry, I don’t want you to be late for school.” “I’m ready,” shouted Frida. “Let’s go! I want to get to school so I can invite my friends Violet and Mary to our Cinco de Mayo celebration.”

“Mamá, ¿a dónde está mi traje del General Ignacio Zaragoza?” preguntó Emiliano. “Está en el armario” respondió Mamá. “Apresúrate, no quiero que lleguen tarde a la escuela”. “Yo estoy lista” grito Frida. “¡Vámonos! Ya quiero llegar a la escuela para invitar a mis amigas Violeta y María a nuestra celebración del Cinco de Mayo”.

Upon arriving at the school, all the students looked at Emiliano with curiosity.“Emiliano, why are you dressed like that?” Gabriel asked.“Because I am General Ignacio Zaragoza,” replied Emiliano, raising his wooden sword. “Remember that today is Cinco de Mayo!”

Al llegar a la escuela, todos los estudiantes se quedaron viendo a Emiliano con curiosidad. “Emiliano, ¿por qué estás vestido así?” le preguntó Gabriel. “Porque soy el General Ignacio Zaragoza” respondió Emiliano levantando su espada de madera. “¡Recuerda que hoy es Cinco de Mayo!”

“You’re right, today is Mexican Independence Day!” announced Mary. “No, Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on the 16th of September,” clarified Frida. “On May 5th, we celebrate the victory against the French army, who tried to invade Mexico in 1862.”

“Tienes razón, ¡hoy se celebra el Día de la Independencia de México!” anunció María. “No, el Día de la Independencia de México se festeja el 16 de septiembre” aclaró Frida. “El 5 de mayo, celebramos la victoria ante el ejército francés, quienes trataron de invadir México en 1862.”

“Where was this battle?” asked Violet.Frida and Emiliano simultaneously responded, “in Puebla!”“We would love it if you all came to our home this afternoon to celebrate with us and learn more about this beautiful city,” added Frida.“Yes, let’s go!” they all replied.

“¿Y en dónde sucedió esta batalla?” preguntó Violeta. Frida y Emiliano gritaron al mismo tiempo, “¡En Puebla!” “Nos encantaría si todos ustedes vinieran a nuestra casa esta tarde para que celebren con nosotros y conozcan más acerca de esa linda ciudad” agregó Frida. “¡Sí, vamos!” respondieron todos.

“Welcome!” said Emiliano. “I’m glad you came! I want to show you the photo album of our last trip to Puebla. See how glorious the city is and how it’s been renovated!”

“¡Bienvenidos!” dijo Emiliano. “¡Qué bueno que vinieron! Les quiero enseñar el álbum de fotos de nuestro último viaje a Puebla. ¡Vean qué gloriosa es la ciudad y como se ha transformado!”

“This Ferris wheel is incredible! Did you ride it?” asked Mary. “Yes, it’s called the ‘Star of Puebla’ and it’s the largest transportable observation wheel in the world!” Frida replied. “At the top you can see all of Puebla.”

“¡Está increíble esta rueda! ¿Ustedes se subieron a ella?” preguntó María.“¡Sí, se llama ‘La Estrella de Puebla’ y es la rueda de observación transportable más grande del mundo!” respondió Frida. “Arriba puedes ver todo Puebla”.

Emiliano turned the page and said, “Here we are at the Forts of Loreto and Guadalupe, which were used by the Poblanos to defend themselves during the battle of Cinco de Mayo.”At that moment, Frida and Emiliano’s grandparents arrived.

Emiliano le dio la vuelta a la hoja y les dijo: “Aquí estamos en los fuertes de Loreto y Guadalupe, los cuales fueron usados por los poblanos para defenderse durante la batalla del Cinco de Mayo”.En ese momento llegaron los abuelos de Frida y Emiliano.

“Abuelito Jose, tell us the story of the battle of Puebla,” requested Frida. “Of course, with pleasure,” responded Grandpa Jose. “During that time, the government of Mexico was very poor and could not pay all the money it owed to Spain, France and England. France did not like that and declared war on them.”

“Abuelito José, cuéntanos la historia de la batalla de Puebla” pidió Frida. “Claro, con mucho gusto” respondió abuelito José. “Durante esa época, el gobierno de México estaba muy pobre y no podía pagar todo el dinero que le debía a España, Francia e Inglaterra. A Francia no le gustó eso y les declaró la guerra”.

“Back then, the french had the most powerful army in the world and the Mexican army was much smaller. Miraculously, the Mexican army managed to defeat the French under the charge of General Ignacio Zaragoza. That is why Emiliano dresses like General Zaragoza every Cinco de Mayo,” smiled Grandpa Jose.

“En aquel entonces, los franceses tenían el ejército más poderoso del mundo y el ejército mexicano era mucho más pequeño. Milagrosamente, el ejército mexicano logró vencer a los franceses bajo el cargo del General Ignacio Zaragoza. Es por eso que Emiliano se viste como el General Zaragoza cada Cinco de Mayo” sonrió abuelito José.

“Did you know the Battle of Puebla and the American Civil war were fought at approximately the same time?” Frida asked. “Wow, I did not know that!” Gabriel said with amazement.

“¿Sabían que la Batalla de Puebla y la Guerra Civil Americana ocurrió aproximadamente al mismo tiempo?” Frida preguntó. “¡Guau, eso no lo sabía!” dijo Gabriel con cara de asombro.

“It’s not that I don’t enjoy seeing your photos,” mumbled Leonard, “but my stomach is growling with hunger.” Just at that moment, Emiliano and Frida’s mom entered. “Everyone come to the dining room. I have prepared mole poblano and a table full of traditional candies. Come and give them a try!” “Thank you!” they all exclaimed.

“No es que no me guste ver sus fotos” murmuró Leonardo, “pero mi estómago ya me gruñe de hambre”. Justo en ese mismo momento entra la mamá de Emiliano y Frida. “Vengan todos al comedor. Les he preparado mole poblano y toda una mesa llena de dulces típicos. ¡Vengan y Pruébenlos!” “¡Muchas Gracias!” exclamaron todos juntos.

“For my next vacation I’m going to Puebla!” exclaimed Violet.“We can all go together to the nine magic villages of the state!” said Frida. “They are beautiful and it’s obvious that Puebla continues to progress forward!”“That would be incredible! Thank you for coming and making this the best Cinco de Mayo party!” said Emiliano.

“¡En mis siguientes vacaciones voy a ir a Puebla!” exclamó Violeta.“¡Podemos ir todos juntos a los nueve pueblos mágicos del estado!” dijo Frida. “Son hermosos y es obvio que Puebla Sigue con el Progreso”. “¡Eso sería increíble! ¡Gracias por venir y hacer esta la mejor fiesta del Cinco de Mayo!” dijo Emiliano.

HAPPY CINCO de MAYO

That night Frida and Emiliano snuggled under their favorite “Happy Cinco De Mayo” blanket and went to sleep content to have shared a little about the true story of Cinco de Mayo with their friends.

Esa noche Frida y Emiliano mientras se acurrucaban debajo de su manta favorita que dice “Feliz Cinco de Mayo” se fueron a dormir contentos de poder compartir con sus amigos, un poco sobre la verdadera historia del Cinco de Mayo.
