Mapping and Assessing Personal ProgressMAPP

MAPP is a suite of materials developed by The Dales School to facilitate the planning, assessment and recording of progress in relation to personal learning intentions. In particular it provides a way of recognising lateral progression.

The materials divide into two main sections. The first focuses on setting learning intentions whilst the second focuses on assessment. It is important to note that the Continuum of Skill Development (CSD) which makes up section 2 of MAPP is an independent tool and can be used to evaluate progress against learning intentions which are drawn from sources other than section 1 of MAPP.

The general principles governing the schemes of work are that they

• are developmental in nature and open to personalisation - they start at the beginning of the individual pupil’s learning journey and aim for the highest level of independence possible;

• cover all stages of education from 2 to 25 (and beyond) but are not directly related to either age or key stage. Learners fit into them where they will according to their individual abilities, interests and learning journey;

• are not related to the National Curriculum, though the common language of the P scales is occasionally used for ease of understanding.

These Schemes of Work have been written by teachers who have expertise in Special Education. They are currently teaching pupils who are working with the full range of P Scales and the early levels of the National Curriculum. The information has also been reviewed and critically reviewed by another group of teaching professionals, including Head Teachers and School Inspectors.

We hope that you will find the materials helpful when working with pupils who are achieving within the eight levels of the P Scales, the first two levels of the National Curriculum and across all four key stages
