PSV Eindhoven may have never met Liverpool FC before but their coach Ronald Koeman certainly knows what it takes to get the better of the Group C favourites. Koeman was at the helm of the SL Benfica side that eliminated the Merseyside club from the UEFA Champions League last season, winning home and away to wrest the European crown from their grip in the last 16. Even the most ardent PSV fan would concede a repeat appears a tall order, but just one victory against the Reds would boost the Dutch champions' prospects in a section that also features Galatasaray SK and FC Girondins de Bordeaux. Kuijt homecoming • Rafael Benítez's Liverpool look stronger than ever following some high-profile attacking reinforcements. As well as injecting lightning pace into his squad by signing Welsh forward Craig Bellamy and wingers Jermaine Pennant and Mark González, Benítez also recruited striker Dirk Kuijt. The recently crowned Dutch Player of the Year struck 71 goals in 101 league appearances for former club Feyenoord – including the only goal against PSV in Rotterdam last December. • Liverpool started the season by defeating Chelsea FC in the Community Shield. Peter Crouch scored the winner and he also headed the goal that secured the Reds' place in the UEFA Champions League group stage, finding the net in the 1-1 draw with Maccabi Haifa FC in the third qualifying round second leg in the neutral venue of Kiev. Liverpool did have a scare in the home leg, falling behind before battling back to win 2-1 through goals from Bellamy and González. Fresh start for PSV • For their part, PSV are starting afresh after a summer of change. Besides Koeman's arrival in place of the Russia-bound Guus Hiddink, several high-profile players have departed since they captured a second successive Dutch title in April. André Ooijer, Theo Lucius, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Johan Vonlanthen all moved on. • On the plus side, Phillip Cocu is still around to lend his considerable experience while the new faces include Mexican FIFA World Cup defender Carlos Salcido. PSV started the new season with a 3-1 loss to AFC Ajax in the Dutch Super Cup but will hope to have found their stride by the time Liverpool visit. One man who will know all about the English opposition is new signing defender Jan Kromkamp, who swapped Liverpool for Eindhoven on transfer deadline day having moved to Anfield in January. Mixed fortunes • PSV's home form against English clubs has been patchy. They have won just four of ten ties and none of their last four, including a 1-1 draw with Arsenal FC in 2004 - a game Pennant watched from the substitutes' bench. • Liverpool have played just six matches against Dutch sides. The first, back in 1966/67, was a sobering 5-1 loss to AFC Ajax but they have since recorded three wins and two draws. UEFA information

UEFA and Europe's major clubs ended two days of European Club Forum discussions last Wednesday, with thepledge to seek common ground and unity. The talks focused among other things, on the future structure of UEFA'sclub competitions, the relationship between UEFA and the clubs, stadium matters and commercial matters related tothe European club competitions. UEFA's professional football director Giorgio Marchetti said: "I would welcome thismeeting as the dawning of a new period of positive relations with the clubs."

Crucial advice to help clubs tackle racism on and off the pitch is the focal point of a new publication produced onUEFA's behalf by its partner, the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network. Tackling Racism in Club Football- A Guide For Clubs has been issued initially in English to herald the start of the new UEFA club competition seasonand is the latest step in the concerted campaign being waged to rid the game of racism and discrimination.

UEFA has asked referees to clamp down on dissent after the UEFA Referees' Committee, together with top officials, discussed various refereeing issues at their fourth annual gathering. Following the outcome of the discussions in Nyona fortnight ago, UEFA wants to emphasise that it has asked match officials to take immediate action by cautioningplayers in the case of the following offences: waving of an imaginary card to have an opponent booked; crowdingaround the referee, when at least one player should be cautioned and not only the initiator; and dissent by gestureor running towards to referee.

UEFA has completed three new media rights agreements covering China guaranteeing what the European body sayswill be "an unprecedented breadth and quality of coverage" of European football's major club competition. CCTV,China's free to air national broadcaster which is present in 350 million television homes, will show extensive highlightsof each match night for the next three seasons. UEFA's long-term partner across Asia, ESPN Star, will show morethan 45 matches live in China per season as well as delayed matches, highlights and magazine programmes, whileSina.com, China's leading internet portal with 60 million page views per day, will show delayed match coverage andestablish its own UEFA Champions League mobile service.

UEFA has paid tribute to the late Giacinto Facchetti, the FC Internazionale Milano president who died aged 64 lastMonday after a battle with cancer. Facchetti, who as a player with Inter twice won the European Champion Clubs'Cup. He was a valued part of the UEFA family, having served the UEFA Fair Play Committee and UEFA's TechnicalDevelopment Committee. Back in March, UEFA presented Facchetti with a Champions of Europe award amidcelebrations to mark 50 years of European Cup finals. Andy Roxburgh, the UEFA technical director. "He was a fantasticperson – he was an absolute gentleman." As a mark of respect, Inter have retired Facchetti's No3 shirt, with currentplayer Nicolás Burdisso switching to No16.

Head coach profiles

Ronald KoemanDate of birth: 21 March 1963Nationality: DutchPlaying career: FC Groningen, AFC Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, FC Barcelona, FeyenoordCoaching career: Netherlands (assistant coach), FC Barcelona (assistant coach), SBV Vitesse, AFC Ajax, SL Benfica,PSV Eindhoven

Ronald Koeman bounced back quickly from a disappointing end to his reign at AFC Ajax in February 2005, taking upthe vacant position at SL Benfica following the departure of legendary Italian Giovanni Trapattoni. He guided theLisbon club to the last eight of the UEFA Champions League and third place in Portugal before accepting the challengeof following Guus Hiddink at PSV Eindhoven in May 2006.

Ajax's fortunes suffered a steady decline after Koeman got off to a brilliant start at the ArenA, winning a domesticdouble in 2001/02. Despite regaining the title in 2003/04, Ajax had fallen behind rivals PSV as the Netherlands' topteam, and Koeman resigned after the Amsterdam side were knocked out of the UEFA Cup. It is no surprise that hehas eventually found his way to Eindhoven, as Koeman was a member of the PSV side that overcame Benfica in the1988 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, the libero converting the opening kick in PSV's 6-5 penalty shoot-outvictory after 120 goalless minutes in Stuttgart.

Koeman was admired not only as an accomplished sweeper but also as a free-kick expert, and it was from a dead-ballthat he scored FC Barcelona's winning goal in the 1992 European Cup final. Koeman and brother Erwin started outat their father's old club, FC Groningen, and were later members of the Netherlands side which won the 1988 UEFAEuropean Championship - the country's first and only major international honour. That triumph capped a momentousyear, Koeman also winning the European Cup and Dutch double, and paved the way for a move to Barça in 1989where he would win another four Spanish titles.

Rafael BenítezDate of birth: 16 April 1960Nationality: SpanishPlaying career: Real Madrid CF B, CP Parla, CD LinaresCoaching career: Real Madrid CF (youth coach), Real Valladolid (assistant coach), CA Osasuna (assistant coach),CD Tenerife, CF Extremadura, Valencia CF, Liverpool FC

Rafael Benítez has stamped his authority on Liverpool FC since his arrival from Spain on 16 June 2004. FormerPrimera División stars Xabi Alonso and Luis García blended perfectly with locals like Steven Gerrard and JamieCarragher as Benítez immediately guided the Reds to UEFA Champions League glory. Liverpool's recovery from 3-0down against AC Milan and subsequent penalty shoot-out victory was one of the greatest finals ever. Although theholders were eliminated in the 2005/06 first knockout round, Benítez still oversaw an FA Cup triumph.

After spending his playing career in the lower leagues as a midfielder with Real Madrid CF B, Benítez coached youthplayers at Madrid before taking charge of CD Tenerife and CF Extremadura - impressive spells which earned him hisbig break at Valencia CF in 2001. He led the club to their first league title for 31 years in 2002, repeating the trick in2004 when they also won the UEFA Cup in Gothenburg.

That 2-0 victory against Olympique de Marseille was his final game before being lured to Liverpool, a club starved ofleague honours since 1990. The Reds' continental glory in 2004/05 has yet to be matched in the Premiership withfifth- and then third-placed finishes but there was an FA Cup triumph last May. Benítez again masterminded a dramaticcomeback, with Liverpool recovering from a two-goal deficit against West Ham United FC to draw 3-3 and then prevailon penalties.

Massimo Busacca has steadily enhanced his reputation since succeeding the retired Urs Meier on Switzerland's élitelist of match officials, culminating in his selection as one of Europe's ten referees for the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals. He took charge of three games in Germany, including Argentina’s 2-1 second-round victory against Mexico. Hailingfrom Monte Carrasso, in the Italian-speaking southern Swiss canton of Ticino, Busacca reached the highest refereeinglevel in his homeland in 1996, and within three years was cutting his teeth in various youth competitions and UEFAqualifying rounds.

The Swiss saw his 2006/07 UEFA Champions League campaign begin with the third qualifying round second legbetween CA Osasuna and Hamburger SV, having taken charge of three group-stage encounters in the previousseason including FC Artmedia's famous victory at FC Porto. It is a competition in which Busacca is regularly involved, having notably served as fourth official to Meier for the 2002 UEFA Champions League final between Real MadridCF and Bayer 04 Leverkusen in Glasgow.

Another high-level game for Busacca was the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship semi-final between Brazil andArgentina in Utrecht. Back in his homeland, the company director by profession, who is also a keen skier in his sparetime, is regularly appointed for top games and he took charge of the Swiss Cup final for the first time in May 2005between Luzern and FC Zürich.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list willbe reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubsfrom within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the clubfor two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eightin 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubsfrom simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given agreater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as aconsequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is€750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contractsconcluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe'spremier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA tocover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream inexcess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per centof the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to theclubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m fromTV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of€2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive€2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions Leaguewinners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive,at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by theclubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two orone – participating from a given association.
