Match backgroundPSV Eindhoven take on FC Rostov on matchday six needing a victory to leapfrog the Russian champions and snatchthird place in Group D. A win or draw for the visitors guarantees their participation in the UEFA Europa Leagueknockout phase.

• Rostov hold a three-point lead over bottom-placed PSV thanks to their 3-2 home victory over FC Bayern Münchenon 23 November – their first victory in the UEFA Champions League.

• On the same night PSV lost 2-0 at Club Atlético de Madrid and remain without a win in this season's competition.

Match backgroundPSV• While only victory will extend their European season, Phillip Cocu's men need a draw to avoid equalling their lowestpoints total in a UEFA Champions League group stage campaign. Their poorest performance to date was in 1992/93(one point) – the only time they have gone through a group stage in the UEFA Champions League or UEFA EuropaLeague without winning a match.

• They came from behind to beat PFC CSKA Moskva 2-1 on matchday six of last season's UEFA Champions Leaguegroup stage, Luuk de Jong and Davy Pröpper scoring in the final 12 minutes to propel the Dutch club into theknockout stage.

• PSV's overall home record against Russian opposition is W3 D0 L2.

Rostov• Ivan Daniliants' team drew 2-2 with PSV in Russia on matchday two and need only repeat that result in Eindhoven tosecure third place and entry into the UEFA Europa League round of 32.

• The group stage newcomers have already avoided defeat in the Netherlands once this season, having held AFCAjax 1-1 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off, with the help of a Christian Noboa free-kick. Noboastruck again – along with Sardar Azmoun, Aleksandr Erokhin and Dmitri Poloz – as Rostov won the return leg 4-1.

Coach and player links• As an FC Barcelona player, Cocu beat FC Lokomotiv Moskva away (3-1) and at home (1-0) in the 2002/03 UEFAChampions League first group stage.

• Noboa played in the Dinamo Moskva team that beat PSV 1-0 both home and away in the 2014/15 UEFA EuropaLeague.

• Olexandr Zinchenko scored his first senior goal playing for FC Ufa in a 2-1 home league defeat by Rostov in July2015.

• César Navas's FC Rubin suffered 2010/11 UEFA Europa League elimination against FC Twente in the round of 32,Luuk de Jong scoring the first goal in the Dutch side's 2-0 first-leg victory in Russia (agg 4-2).

• Simon Poulsen helped AZ Alkmaar beat FC Anji in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League round of 16 (1-0 home, 0-0away).

Match factsPSV• Luuk de Jong scored his first goal in ten games as PSV defeated ADO Den Haag 3-1 at home on 26 November.

• Andrés Guardado sustained a thigh injury during Mexico's 2-1 FIFA World Cup qualifying triumph over the UnitedStates on 18 November and was ruled out for up to four weeks.

• Jürgen Locadia (out since 28 August, groin), Jorrit Hendrix (28 September, knee) and Jetro Willems (23 November, head) are still sidelined.

Rostov• Aleksandr Gatskan will incur a suspension with his next booking.

• Gatskan was sent off two minutes after scoring the second goal in Rostov's 2-0 home win against FC Anji on 27November.

• Three days later, Aleksandr Bukharov made his first start since 9 September in the 1-0 loss at FC Ural SverdlovskOblast.

• Rostov announced the signing of Angola Under-21 defender Fernando Jacinto, younger brother of their formerplayer Bastos, on 28 November.
