Putsimply,WorkExperience(WE)isaboutexperiencinglegalpractice-thedeliveryoflegalservicesinareal-worldcontext.
WEisoneofthethreecomponentsoftheCollege’sPracticalLegalTraining(PLT)ProgramwhichqualifiessuccessfulgraduatestoapplytobeadmittedtopracticeasanAustralianlawyer.Collegestudentscanchoosebetween25daysofworkexperienceplusanadditionalstudymodule,orthemoretraditional75days.
Workexperienceenablesstudentstoobserveandtakepartintheprofessionalapplicationoftherelevantknowledgeandskillstosolverealproblemsforrealclients.WEconsolidateswhatthestudentlearnsinthePLTcoursework.
The College’s Work Experience Committee has recognised thatappropriate practical experience can be gained in a wide range of organisations such as• Asolicitororbarristerinprivatepractice• Agovernment,semi-governmentorcorporatelegalofficeor
department,anemployeroremployeeassociation• Ajudgetocarryoutlegalresearchandprovidelegalservices
• Anemployeroremployeeassociation• Atribunalmember(whoisalegalpractitioner)tocarryoutlegal
researchandprovidelegalservices• ACommunityLegalCentre
Workexperienceplacementsareanopportunityfortheprofessionto“giveback”bysupportingthecareerdevelopmentandtrainingofnewlawyers.Theycan“showcase”differentpartsofadiverseprofession,andintroducestudentstoarangeofcareeroptions–eg.ruralandregionalpractice,communitylegalandlegalaid,in-houseandgovernment,commercialandprivateclient.
AWEplacementcanbeanopportunitytoseeifthelawgraduateisagoodfitwiththecultureoftheorganisationandcouldcontributeifemployedasanadmittedlawyer.ThereisnoobligationtoemployattheendoftheplacementbutmanyorganisationshavesuccessfullyusedWEplacementstoattractandretaintalent.
Afruitfulworkplacementexperiencecannotonlyhelpastudentcompletetheirqualificationasalawyer,butmayencouragethemtopractiseinanareawhichtheyhavenotpreviouslyconsidered.
Wehavehundredsofemployerswhohavetakenworkexperiencestudentsyearonyear,allaroundAustraliaandinalltypesoflegalemployment.
Andofcourse,PLTstudentscanaddvaluebybeinganotherpairofhandstotakepartintheday-to-daywork,orbybeinganaddedresourceforspecialprojects–suchasresearch,compilingdocumentsforlitigationorreviewinginternalworkprocesses.

TheWErulesvaryfromstatetostatebutcurrentlyyoucanprovideaminimum1dayperweekinNSWandSA(whichcanbemadeupofhalfdays)andVictoria,andaminimum2fulldaysperweekinQueenslandandWestAustralia.
Subjecttominimumblocksof10days(weekdaysonlyinWAandQld)youmayprovideuptothefull25or75daysofplacement.Itisuptoyourparticularcircumstancesandneeds.
Theroleoftheworkexperiencesupervisoristoaidthestudent’sdevelopmentbyprovidingopportunitiesto:
• Experiencetheroutines,proceduresanddynamicsofthedeliveryoflegalservices
• Beexposedtoclientsforwhomlegalservicesareprovided• Haveexperienceintheprocessofbecomingaprofessional
• Receivesupervisionandfeedbackfromanexperiencedprofessional.
Thelessonslearnedfromagoodsupervisorwilllastthroughoutastudent’scareer.Arewardingandenjoyableplacementcanbeanimportantsteptobecomingacompetentandmotivatedpractitioner.
Tohelpdevelopthestudent’sskills,asupervisorshould:

Whiletheopportunitiesaworkexperienceplacementmightprovidewillvarydependingonthetypeoforganisation,followingaresomeexamplesofthetypeofactivitiesstudentsshouldexperience,bothhands-onandbyobservation.
