Finally, we have settled back into our regular routine: rushing the kids to and from school and shuttling them around town to after-school activities. Football season is in full swing and summer vacation is now a distant memory. The temperature is finally starting to cool off a bit. With the heat and humidity dropping, we can get back to enjoying outdoor family activities and gatherings with friends.

With the cooler weather comes every kid’s favorite fall holiday – Halloween. It’s time to decorate the house with pumpkins, stock up on candy bars and lollipops, and take your little ones shopping for costumes. Pretty soon our streets will be filled with pint-sized superheroes, princesses, witches and rock stars. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture these precious moments, for these are memo-ries that will last a lifetime.

Have a Happy Halloween everyone!

Sincerely, Sven BudzischPublisher/Owner

An annual tradition more than five decades in the making returns to Plantation next month, and guests are advised to bring a good appetite. Up to 6,000 people are once again expected to turn out for the

Plantation Volunteer Fire Association’s 56th Annual Barbecue, which will be held November 3 at Pine Island Park. Organizers say great barbecue is only part of what makes the annual event a success. “It is just a great day with a lot of fun, entertainment and good food,” said Jon Hatch, the Plantation EMT/Firefighter who is chairing the yearly event for the eighth year.

The barbecue is an annual fundraising event that features great barbecue served up by the city’s firefighters. The highlight of the menu is chicken and ribs,

doused with the “secret sauce” made famous by the late Mayor Frank Veltri. Since the early days of the event, Veltri, who also served as the event’s head chef for 50 years, would whip up the sauce in the kitchen of his home, keeping the rec-ipe under lock and key. After the Mayor passed in 2006, the recipe and the title of head chef was turned over to Firefighter/Head Chef Barry Stearns.

Stearns and his crew have the tasty task of cooking 2,000 pounds of ribs and 2,000 pounds of chicken over 420 bags of charcoal. The rest of the meal, all served by firefighters, is rounded out by 30 five-gallon buckets of cole slaw, 4,000 rolls, 20 giant cans of baked beans and 4,000 cookies. Also returning this year for additional purchase, hickory-smoked

corn on the cob that is roasted throughout the day by the department’s Rescue Division. Hatch says along with three different flavors of dipping but-ter, the treat has found its way onto the menu. “It was a huge success all day long, so we’ve brought it back again this year,” Hatch said. Beverages will also be available for purchase.

There are also bounce houses, carnival games, pony rides, and live music to keep everyone entertained after they eat. There will be lots of firefighting gear to see, including helicopter and truck displays, the K-9 unit, and a performance by bagpipers.

The barbecue is a family friendly event that was created 56 years ago by the city’s then newly formed firefighters association. The association’s main goal for that first barbecue was to help raise money to get the volunteer fire department up and running. “With the proceeds, there were able to go out and buy and fire truck and start the fire department. We’ve carried it on all these years,” said Hatch. Currently, the proceeds are used to help fund department programs that give back to the community.

The 56th annual Plantation Volunteer Fire Association’s Barbecue will be held November 3 from noon to 5 p.m. at Pine Island Park, 320 S. Pine Island Road. Watch for your ticket purchase letters in the mail. Advance tickets are $10 for adult and $6 for children. You can also buy tickets from the Fire Department by calling 954-797-2150 or buy them at the gate. Prices at the gate are $12 per adult, $7per child. Credit cards will be accepted at the gate.

annual barbecue heats up for its 56th year

It is that time of year when tiny ghosts and goblins, superhe-roes and princesses prepare to take to the streets in full force for Halloween. This year, the City of Plantation is continuing its tradition of helping everyone to

celebrate safely. Plantation›s Parks & Recreation Department and the Plantation Police Department are once again sponsoring A Family Halloween & Safety

Festival and thousands of people are expected to stop by. “Approximately 1800 to 2000 children and adults attend this event. Most of the children are in costumes and a large portion of adults are also dressed,” said Cheryl Greenberg, Publicity Coordinator for the City.

The event will be held October 26 at Volunteer Park, located at 12050 W. Sunrise Blvd. It’s a new venue for the festival, which will run from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. It had previously been held in the Kennedy Community Center, which was torn down to make way for a new building.

Kids are invited to come in costume, and see if their outfit has what it takes to take home a prize in one of the costume contests. There will be free candy and Halloween bags handed out, and afterwards they can enjoy a children’s carni-val, games and activities, inflatable’s, food, face painting and music. There will also be a spooky room called the Zombie Diner, but parents take caution, it is not for the little ones. The Plantation Police and Fire Departments will have exhibits set-up and the festival will also feature the Plantation Puppeteers of the Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library.

Plantation has had a long history of entertaining young trick-or-treaters. According to Greenberg, the Central Park Gymnasium was the setting for a Haunted House in the early 80’s, that was later moved to a storefront in the Fountains Shopping Center for several nights each year. Years later, they also added a Tiny Tot Halloween Theater in another store front also for 4 nights. In 2005, they began co-sponsoring the event with the Police Department and changed the name to A Family Halloween & Safety Festival.

The Family Halloween & Safety Festival will be held October 26 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Volunteer Park, located at 12050 W. Sunrise Blvd. For more information, call the Police Department at 954-797-2602 or the Parks & Recreation Department at 954-452-2510.

plantation artist blankets pembroke pines with smiling facesBy JUlie levin

A plantation artist was responsible for bringing a few more smiles to our area recently. Artist Todd Brittingham installed a series of whimsical smiling faces, known as face bombing, at seven different loca-

tions across Pembroke Pines. Created with lightweight felt, the graphic images transformed ordinary objects into art. For the artist, it was a chance to make people smile and feel good about themselves. “I like the idea of bringing art inside, as opposed to being in a gallery or museum. It’s nice to have it outside in a natural setting,” said Brittingham, whose wife Jennifer is a lifelong resident of Plantation, as well as many of her family members.

The first face bombing installation went up September 12 in the portico at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center, at 301 NW 103rd Avenue in Pembroke Pines. Other face bombings went up at seven municipal locations, including City Hall, Fire Department Headquarters, the Pines Recreation

Teen Center, as well as two parks and two schools. “The personification of inanimate objects makes the buildings and trees seem

humanlike, and somehow they become a reflection of us,” said Brittingham, who also teaches at Imagine Charter School in Plantation.

Brittingham first came up with the idea for face bomb-ing while visiting his grand-mother in North Carolina. He came across a chimney that was the only thing standing in the ruins of a burned-out home. Brittingham, who does land and environmental art, sorted through old fabrics at his grandmother’s home and decided to create eyeballs and a mouth to hang on the chimney. “It was just kind of a natural idea,” he said. “The chimney just kind of called for it, but then I realized faces could go anywhere.” He repeated the idea adding facial elements to sites in the Florida Keys, Miami and even several waterfalls and caves in Costa Rica.

In addition to earthworks, Brittingham is also a painter and sculptor. His work will also be featured in the exhibition About Face | Portraiture – A Reflection of Ourselves. The exhibit will run through November 22 at Studio 18 in the Pines, 1101 Poinciana Drive, Pembroke Pines FL 33025. There were tea, crumpets and hats galore at a recent fund-raiser hosted by the Plantation Garden Club. Recently, the club partnered with Covenant Village in Plantation to host a Traditional High Tea that drew

dozens of residents and community members. Tea aficionados joined together for an afternoon of fun, food, entertainment and a parade of unique hat creations.

The event was also designed to raise funds for many of the Plantation Garden Club’s on-going projects, including their scholarship fund, and donations to the Plantation High School Rocket Club and South Plantation High School Solar Car Club.

Established in 1963, the Plantation Garden Club is also known for its support of various charitable projects including the Butterfly Garden at Plantation Historical Society, the planting of memorial trees, and garden projects at Peters Elementary School and Mirror Lake Elementary School.

As many as 500 people are expected to come together this month to help raise money and awareness

to end domestic abuse in the Jewish com-munity. The JFS KOLOT Coalition will hold its eighth annual KOLOT Luncheon and Fashion Show October 20, and organizers are urging people of all ages to come together to speak out against domestic abuse. “We can only end family violence when one generation, parent to child, grandparent to grandchild, passes on the message that abusive behavior is never acceptable--ever,” said Amy Stolberg of Plantation, who is co-chairing the event with Debbie Covert.

Themed “Generation to Generation,” the event will be held at The Signature Grand, located at 6900 State Road 84, Davie. Covert said Kolot chose the theme of Generation to Generation to emphasize several key points.

“Domestic abuse is often generational, witnessed by children and repeated in their relationships,” she said. The proceeds from the event will benefit those seeking services from the JFS Domestic Abuse Program.

The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a shopping boutique of vendors offer-ing unique gift items, as well as a silent auction and raffle prizes. The luncheon, awards, fashion show and program will begin at 12:30 p.m. This year, the fashion show will be put on by two well-known Plantation stores—Alene’s and Men’s

Wearhouse. Shopping will continue after the luncheon until 3:00 p.m.

Since 1999, KOLOT, which means voices, has convened organizations and individuals dedicated to raising awareness, promoting education and increasing services for victims of domestic abuse and their children in the Jewish community. As in years past, a domes-tic abuse survivor will put a face on the prob-lem, and share her inspiring story with guests.

“It touches you to listen to them tell their story and see how far they’ve come,” said Stolberg.

Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida, Family Law and Domestic Violence Unit and its members: Barbara J. Prager, Lisa G. Goldberg, Mindy Jones, Marta Estevez, and Cynthia Woodward, will receive the prestigious 2013

Ending Abuse Award for their outstand-ing commitment to the provision of critical legal services to those impacted by domes-

tic violence.

Ticket price is $85 per person or $118 with 25 raffle tickets; $36 for children under 13. Proceeds from this event will benefit those seeking services from the JFS Domestic Abuse Program, including the 24/7 Crisis Line, counseling, case management, support groups, and financial assistance. For sponsorships, ads, reservations or to donate a raffle prize, please contact Erica Kramer at 954-370-2140 or email her at [email protected].

plantation residents co-author innovative guide

It’s not a topic many people like to talk about, let alone address, but what hap-pens when a spouse, or a parent unexpectedly dies? It’s a topic that’s been on the minds of Rick and Shelley Lundy, longtime Plantation residents, who have taken on the subject by co-authoring a guide designed to help make that troubling time a little bit easier.

Along with friends Chas and Sunny Hunt, the four recently released a new publication they’re calling the “If You Died Guide.” It is designed to be a helpful resource for baby boomers and others who want a way to incorporate in one document all of the important matters of daily life---legal, financial, medical and everything in between. In the event something unforeseen happens, it is a way to keep a family’s daily life running with unneeded stress.

The authors came up with the idea several years ago, as they began to see their friends’ parents pass away, sometimes leaving a mess to untangle as family members did not know how to locate and manage many financial, legal, medical and household matters. Shelley Lundy said she’s seen the situation sometimes tear families apart, and she wanted to find a way to make her family as prepared as possible. “Although I knew what we had, Rick, as an accountant by trade, handles all the day to day finances, insurances, bill paying, etc. and I wanted to make sure I could get my hands on this important information in the event of an emergency. Similarly, Rick knows very little about what I handle in the household. We have a dog that requires nine medications every day and he has no clue what they are. We started to think that that kind of information, all just needed to be in one comprehensive document,” Lundy said.

The guide tackles banking and investment information and includes every-thing from passwords, codes and keys to listings of health care providers, medi-cation and even how to take care of family pets. “The “If You Died Guide” is also a definitive all-in-one reference to access your important information any time while you’re very much alive,” said Rick Lundy.

The guide is available in fillable PDF format, electronic flash drive, printed notebook, or any combination of the three. For more information, visit www.ifyoudiedguide.com or call 1-800-856-6394.

We have counseled hundreds of clients through the years, and the most significant mistake that homeowners make when faced with a foreclosure case is to wait until the last minute to contact a

knowledgeable and experienced attorney. Many homeowners think that just like fixing a leaky faucet at home, they can easily defend themselves in a foreclosure proceeding and save their home. Here are several important reasons why you should not try a do-it-yourself foreclosure defense.

Florida’s new speedy foreclosure law (House Bill 87) makes it far easier for lenders to get families out of their homes. Under the new Florida law, the bur-den has now been placed on homeowners to prove that the bank does not have the right to foreclose, instead of the bank being required to prove that they are entitled to a foreclosure. Homeowners will have about 20 days to organize their evidence and present that proof to the court, whereas before they had months or years to develop their case against the lender. Some of the legal defenses to a foreclosure are highly technical, constantly chang-ing, and require specialized knowl-edge. Homeowners are not equipped to tackle the chal-lenges presented by Florida’s speedy foreclosure law without the guid-ance of an attorney.

Florida leads the nation not only in completed foreclosures from April 2012 to March 2013 (according to CoreLogic), but also has the largest backlog of fore-closure cases. The district courts are doing everything in their power to “flush” foreclosure cases out of the court system as quickly as possible. The “rocket docket” system, implemented in many jurisdictions to dispose of hundreds of fore-closure cases daily, is just one means of accomplishing this goal. Courts are also randomly setting cases for trial that are simply not legally ready for trial, or not

“at issue.” Unsuspecting homeowners that are unprepared to defend their case, or that fail to seek a timely continuance of trial, find themselves forced to accept a final judgment of foreclosure, with an auction sale date 30-60 days later.

Preparation is the most important step you can take right now. Your timeframe to save your home has been SHORTENED by our legislature. Organize all your closing documents, every bank statement, every payment, every communication you’ve had with the bank, and contact experienced attorneys like those at The Arcia Law Firm. This way you will be able to know what lies ahead, so you can work with your attorney and ensure that you are defended quickly and properly.

The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent many homeown-ers in our community with mortgage fraud, foreclosure defense and bankruptcy cases. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, don’t try a do-it-yourself foreclosure defense

Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced and determined legal team.

Even at 98-years old, sal esposito says he isn’t one to sit around. In fact many days, you’ll find the Plantation man serving or smack-

ing a forehand across the net at the Frank Veltri Tennis Courts. It’s a sports he took up when he retired 33 years ago, and he hasn’t stopped yet. “Well, it’s a good way to exercise and keep fit,” explained Esposito, who also loves to make toys for children when he’s not on the courts.

To help celebrate Esposito’s 98th birthday, his friends and tennis partners recently hosted a party in his honor at the courts. Nearly two dozen people turned out for food and birthday cake to help cel-ebrate with the guest of honor, who also received a key to the city from City Councilman Jerry Fadgen. “He is so nice and friendly with all the people he plays with at the Veltri tennis center,” said Roberta Block, his ten-nis partner who planned the party along with Andrea Siracusa.

Esposito worked for 45 years as a tool & dye maker in New York City before moving to Plantation in 1978. A few years later, he picked up a tennis racket and learned how to play. To this day, he still arrives at the courts at 7 a.m. to meet his doubles partners, most of whom are “young seniors” in their 60’s and 70’s. “He moves very well, has a beautiful serve and hits that ball very hard,” Block said.

TAG USA Gymnastics Wins Its First National Championship

If you want to be the best, you need to train with the best. That’s why

so many young gymnasts are joining TAG USA Gymnastics in Weston. Owners Marissa and Michael Zoldan have created structured classes for beginners through advanced gymnasts, built the largest and most comfortable facility around, and added the best equipment to distinguish TAG USA Gymnastics as one

of South Florida’s top gymnastic studios. Even more impressive than the gym itself, is TAG USA Gymnastics’ incredible

success. It has won back-to-back State Championships in Gymnastics and, most recently, took home its first National Championship in Trampoline.

The 2013 USAG Trampoline & Tumbling Championships were held July 3rd through 10th in Kansas City, Missouri. Hundreds of trampoline and tumbling ath-letes from around the country competed for “Best in the Nation” honors. To qualify for the National Championships, an athlete must successfully compete in local competitions and excel in state and regional championships

TAG USA Gymnastics’ Hannah Zoldan, age 10, scored a 61.3 on Double Mini Trampoline to earn a First Place finish at the National Championships. She fin-ished first among the nation’s top athletes competing in Double Mini Trampoline at the championships and was the only first place National Champion from South Florida.

Hannah began her athletic career as a competitive gymnast, but switched to the Trampoline and Tumbling Team two years ago. In both the 2012 and 2013 competition seasons, Hannah was Florida State Champion in Trampoline and Double Mini Trampoline events. This was her second trip to the National

Championships. TAG USA Gymnastics took eight athletes to Nationals. All of them finished

among the top fifteen national competitors in at least one event. Jessica Hert, age 14, finished in 4th place nationally in the Trampoline event and Stone Lyons, age 12, finished 5th in Trampoline. The other TAG USA team ath-letes who competed at Nationals included Maria Mendoza, Sofia Mendoza, Katherine Sanford, Alessandra Longo, and Peyton Terris.

TAG USA owners Michael and Marissa Zoldan, as well as the gym’s coach-ing staff, are ecstatic with the fantastic results of their athletes. According to Michael, “All of their dedication and hard work was rewarded with their competitive success.”

This National Championship win is further proof of TAG USA Gymnastics’ success. Its girls and boys gymnastics teams had two stellar seasons at the State Championships. In 2011 and 2012, TAG USA won the Florida State Championships for USAG Level 3 and Level 4 girls gymnastics. TAG USA also won the 2012 State Championship for USAG Prep-Optionals with five members selected to Team Florida. The boys team has been equally successful. In addi-tion to many individual State and Regional Champions, TAG USA had its first Boys Regional Champ and National Qualifier this year.

But TAG USA Gymnastics is much more than a training powerhouse with championship programs. It is a full-service gymnastics center built upon the success of its exceptional recreational gymnastics program. From beginner classes to team, each class has a specific lesson plan and coaches evaluate each gymnast by skill.

TAG USA Gymnastics is also known for its activity-filled summer camp program, where boys and girls can safely spend their summer time enjoying non-stop action like trampoline flying, indoor basketball, rope swing, tum-bling, soccer, pit-flipping, giant inflatables and much more.

TAG USA Gymnastics is located at 1951 North Commerce Parkway in Weston. TAG USA offers recreational gymnastics classes for children from ages 12 months and up. Classes are offered in ten-week sessions. TAG USA has championship girls and boys gymnastics and trampoline and tumbling teams, as well as a competitive cheer team. For more information on classes, birthday parties, or summer and school break camps, please call (954) 384-9393 or visit www.TagGymnastics.com.

Olympic Gold Medalist Aly RAISMAN Inspires TAG USA Gymnasts

In celebration of tag usa gymnastics’ first athlete to win a National Championship, owners Michael and Marissa Zoldan invited

Olympic superstar Aly Raisman to visit the gym. During her two-day stay, Aly worked with TAG USA gymnasts and helped raise funds for the TAG USA Foundation.

Aly won two gold medals at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. She won an individual gold medal for the floor and shared in the Team USA gold medal win. Prior to the Olympics, Aly won a gold medal at the 2011 World Championships and a silver at the 2010 World Championships.

While working closely with approximately 80 members of TAG USA’s Compulsory (levels 2-6) and Optional (levels 7-10) competitive team, Aly shared advice on what it takes to become a cham-pion. She spoke to the girls about her training as a young gymnast, as well as her experiences at the Olympics. Aly also led training groups during which she spotted and offered tips to the TAG USA gymnasts on their beam, bar, vault and floor events.

She also took time to visit with the hundreds of young children taking part in TAG USA’s Summer Sports Camp. Aly greeted over 200 campers and took group photos with them.

In addition, Aly demonstrated to the young gymnasts the importance of philanthropy and helping others who are less fortunate. She signed autographs and took pictures with over 100 young athletes. This fundraiser generated more than $2,500 in donations for the TAG USA Foundation.

Established by Marissa Zoldan, the TAG USA

Foundation helps families affected by can-cer by providing food, clothing, and other necessities. Throughout the year, the gym hosts numerous collection drives to support local charities. Most recently, TAG USA col-lected school supplies for Kids In Distress.

L ike a lot of girls, tiernan ramer has a passion for shoes. but the 13-year old isn’t thinking about her own feet; to date she’s donated close to 500 pairs of shoes that she collected, and she’s not stopping there.

Recently, the Plantation teen expanded her shoe collection efforts to a Plantation sports field to gather gently used athletic shoes. “A lot of kids can’t go play sports if they don’t have the right kind of cleats,” said Tiernan, an 8th grader at Seminole Middle School.

Tiernan’s collection box is sitting at the concession stand near field three at Central Park, where the Plantation Athletic League holds its flag football season. For opening day in August, Commissioner Mark Ruether sent out a call to families asking them to donate shoes and cleats. By the end of the day, 63 pairs of shoes

were packed into the box.”The box was completely filled and spilling over,” said Tiernan. The turn-out was so strong, the league is keeping the box in place through-out the season.

The athletic shoe drive is just the lat-est addition to Tiernan’s “Soles for Souls” project that has already brought in 500 pairs of shoes for disadvantaged children in the community. The drive was inspired by a contest from the Mattel Toy Company, which makes Tiernan’s favorite line of dolls

called “Monster High. The company asked fans to start their own charity and become philanthropists. Tiernan’s project has been so successful that she was named one of the top five winners of their philanthropy contest, which meant $1,000 in her name to her chosen charity In Jacob’s Shoes.

The Broward-based charity works to provide new and gently used shoes, school supplies and athletic equipment to children in need. They distributed the shoes during the recent Back to School Extravaganza, which was held August 10th, Tiernan’s birthday. But instead of having a party, she volunteered all day as a personal shoe shopper for families in need. Local busi-nesses have also pitched in to help with the shoe drive. Bella Hair in Davie and Central Park Vision Center in Plantation both kept a collection bin in place through September.

Tiernan says she plans to keep the shoe collections going all the way through high school. “I want to keep something like this going on for awhile because the more I can help, the better,” she said.

If you’d like to help, call 954-290-5993. For more information on In Jacob’s Shoes, visit injacobsshoes.org.

Thanks to a generous dona-tion, students at one local elemen-tary school kicked off the school

year well-equipped and ready to learn. Peters Elementary School, located at 851 NW 68 Ave., was the only school in Broward to be the beneficiary of a huge donation of backpacks thanks to some good-hearted South Florida employees.

“The backpacks are fabulous,” said Steve DeCotis, the Assistant Principal at Peters Elementary. “The kids that really needed them, those families, were overjoyed at receiving them, as well as the supplies inside.”

The bags came courtesy of the 2nd Annual SWS VolunCheers “Bags of Hope Campaign.” The VolunCheers, an employee-based volunteer program of Southern Wine & Spirits of South Florida, raised funds to purchase backpacks and school supplies for more than 1200 deserving school children. On August 10, the SWS VolunCheers assembled the backpacks at the Bags of Hope event hosted at Southern’s Corporate Office in Miami.

Later in the week, they delivered them schools nominated by the VolunCheers in Broward, Miami Dade, Monroe, Collier, and Palm Beach Counties. Decotis said the book bags help take a financial burden off of many of their families. “It really helps the school and the students alike get off to a great start for the beginning of

the school year and we are very pleased to be able to work with Southern Wine & Spirits and partnering to get that done,” he said.

The SWS VolunCheers is a unique Employee Volunteer Program created to encourage Southern Wine & Spirits of South Florida employees to donate their time, resources and talent in support of local non-profits, schools and community based programs. Founded in 2012, the SWS VolunCheers has already provided over 650 volunteer service hours and raised over $60,000 for programs such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters Mentorship program; Dress for Success; United Way of Miami-Dade; Becca’s Closet, Feeding South Florida, Kids in Distress, National

Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation. . “I am impressed and overwhelmed by the passion and effort that our South

Florida team members applied towards the Bags of Hope Campaign. Raising in excess of $35,000 for South Florida children in need has been a terrific community experience for our VolunCheers team.” said Southern Wine & Spirits of Florida Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing, John Wittig. “SWS of South Florida VolunCheers also partnered with Walgreens—and the retailer generously helped to maximize purchase quantities while also donating additional school supplies to the Campaign.”

Start your day strong with a delicious cup of fresh brewed coffee and some credit union facts....

Since 1844, credit unions have been known for their great savings and now free checking accounts. However, did you know they offer an array of competitive loan products as well? Whether for a car, a mortgage or a home remodel, personal loan or a credit card, chances are you’ll be shopping for a loan at some point. It can be overwhelming. However, knowing the

advantages of a credit union loan verses a bank loan can help you make the right decision.

If you’ve never used a credit union, you may think they’re the same as banks, but that’s not so. Credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives owned by their members. Profits are distributed to members instead of shareholders. This fact makes all the difference. Profits are returned to the members in the form of competitive interest rates on depository accounts and loans.

What are some of the advantages of getting a loan through a credit union?

▸ Competitive interest rates-Lower loan rates mean lower monthly payments and less interest paid over the term of the loan

▸ Convenience-Apply online, in person or over the phone

▸ Fast loan approvals-Local underwriting and processing of loans

▸ Common sense approach-You are not just a credit score

▸ Flexible loan terms

▸ Lower processing fees than banks

▸ Excellent member service

Many credit unions offer a free auto buying/leasing service to their members. This free service allows credit union members to shop for their dream car without visiting a car dealership! All the hassle and some of the fees are eliminated! It’s simple...you get pre-approved for the auto loan at your credit union, let the car buying/leasing service know exactly what you are looking for, then just sit back and relax. You are in good hands while the service finds the auto for you, negoti-ate the best deal and deliver it to you at your convenience.

can i refinance my car loan at a credit union? Yes, credit unions offer competi-tive rates, flexible refinancing terms and low processing fees. Refinancing your existing auto loan at a credit union can possibly save you thousands of dollars over the life of the loan.

Whatever your reason, your local Credit Union has money to lend and a helping hand to make your dreams come true!!

Nancy Rappaport is the President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida. who else wants to live without back pain?

Most people at some point in their life have had an episode of low back pain. This pain can be caused by several factors and can be debilitating. It

may be due to herniated disks, a muscle strain, nerve injury, joint instability or decreased joint mobility, myofascial pain, fibromyalgia, radiculopathy, or other causes. In any case this pain is affecting your life.

5 Ways to Prevent Back Pain:1. Maintain Neutral Posture.

When you have neutral posture, the spine is in proper alignment. This relaxes the muscles and makes it easier to balance your body.

2. Use Proper Lifting Techniques. Keep a neutral spine and use your legs to lift heavy objects. Even

when picking up light items, never bend at the waist.3. Wear the Correct Footwear.

Wear the proper footwear for the activity you are performing. Believe it or not, your feet affect the way your back works and feels. A neutral foot goes a long way to preventing back pain.

4. Keep Your Core Strong. The stronger your abdominal and gluteal muscles are, the less strain it

puts on the muscles in your back.5. Keep Moving.

Avoid standing or sitting in the same position for long periods of time, as this stresses the spine. Moving keeps the back muscles and joints loose.

Back pain can be prevented, but what if you have already got it? What do you do? Physical therapists are experts in the treatment of physical dysfunction and

injury and use techniques to restore normal function and work to reduce or eliminate pain.

The physical therapists at Advanced Therapy Concepts will develop and implement with you an individu-alized plan for recovery based on your symp-toms. This will lead to a better quality of life for you and your family.

Wendy Urso, PT, CLT, has been a practic-ing physical therapist in Broward County since 1995, after graduating from Florida International University, Magna Cum Laude. She began her career in Physical Therapy on a spine team working with injuries of the spine, from simple strains to severe herniated disks and spinal surgeries. Her experience and knowledge in Physical Therapy assures results at Advanced Therapy Concepts. To schedule your free pain consultation at Advanced Therapy Concepts, please call 954-616-1670. Foot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small

number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems.

Growing pains are often seen in children who are exces-sively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knock-kneed. Tight calf muscles can not only

cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night.

Leg pain is most commonly felt during activity. It is also felt at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be felt. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain. Children that are sedentary, may become overweight.

Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight lessen or eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast may be necessary to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence.

An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified and the problem treated. We have seen and treated more than a thousand of these chil-dren with this problem with excellent long-term success.
