Year 9 Child Studies are currently developing their baby care skills, which will be demonstrated in their upcoming assessment. Students are learning the practical skills of bathing infants, changing nappies and clothing, swaddling and how to create safe sleeping environments. As part of this assessment the students are required to take one of our interactive babies home for an overnight care experience. Rachel M and Shinade L were the first students to take the babies home and described the experience as "eye opening and very tiring" and acknowledged "I don't want to be a parent until I'm MUCH older"! Year 10 Child Studies are ploughing along with their Food & Nutrition in Childhood unit and are in the midst of creating their own food product and packaging for infants and children under 3. The girls have come up with some very creative ideas.

PDHPE Champions of the Week Students are nominated for Champion of the Week for positive behaviour and contributions to classwork, enthusiastic participation in practical lessons and demonstrating leadership and teamwork skills. This week’s champions are:

Kyle B (Year 11) and

Dylan B (Year 9).

Year 8 and Year 10 PDHPE classes have just kicked off their new unit of Dance.

For their Assessment Task this term, both year groups will be required to compose an original movement piece encompassing the elements of dance. We can’t wait to see what they come up with. Pictured here is the 10K class busting out the heel-toe polka. R Kohlhardt Acting Head Teacher PDHPE

Year 12 Food Product Development

Our young Master Chefs in the making, are busy making pies. Normally the students would be designing their own and working on the marketing and packaging, but due to the current rules and regulations, they have a modified version of this Product Development class. It was a fun and enjoyable process, and of course, pretty yummy too. P Coogan TAS Teacher

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Year 6-7 Transition Our Year 6-7 transition program has commenced with meetings taking place between Kanahooka High School’s transition team and our local feeder primary schools in Week 6, Term 3. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 restrictions, we have been unable to complete our regular transition activities involving excursions, and meetings have been taking place via Zoom. At this stage we are unsure what restrictions will be in place for Term 4, so until then all activities apart from virtual meetings are on hold, but we will do our very best to support students who are transitioning to High School next year whatever the arrangements are. Parents and carers will be kept informed of any changes and updates. Finally, I would like to congratulate and welcome Mr Ben Rostron as our Year Adviser for Year 7 2021! Sport Selections Later this term, Sport Selections will be taking place again, with students in Years 7-10 making their sports choices for Term 4. Once again we will be completing this online. Students will be provided with more information soon. A Kalsow Stage 4 Deputy Principal

8K Japanese Castles using Minecraft

After learning about Shogunate Japan and medieval castles, 8K have been working on building their own Japanese castles. The students are using the knowledge that they have gained in their learning so far to use the materials and features that are historically correct to make sure their castle can withstand attack from even the most fierce Diamyo (Feudal Lord) in all the land!

This week 7N and 7S have been learning about ancient tools and technology.

After learning about the different types of tools and materials that ancient people used to make them, the students made their own tools. The students were only allowed to use items that they found on the ground and a small bit of twine. After constructing their tools, the students had to explain how they made their tools and how they would help them survive in a prehistoric world.

KULLILLAH

c

Kullillah is here to support our students across all grades and all needs. Frequent visitors work on completing assignments, keeping on top of class work, catching up, and spending time just recollecting their thoughts, with calmness and engagement.

All through COVID-19 we have encouraged our school community to seek balance and assistance when needed. Students please continue to check into the Kullillah Google Classroom where there are links and positive sites to assist with a wide variety of concerns.

Small group curriculum support, small group social skills development, one on one support, Distant Education, and safe space access are just a few of the activities that happen in Kullillah.

Teachers refer students to Kullillah and students present with a variety of needs and concerns. Ms Langlands and Mr Ursino are our Kullillah Teachers who respond to those concerns.

A quiet place to get some work done. A place to reconnect. A place to complete work. A place to seek support and get some one on one support to re-engage.

Well done Kanahooka High School on navigating such a difficult and complex time. Our community needs to stand in support of each other. We are here to help. The Kullillah Team

SCIENCE

Study Science in 2021

With subject selections coming up for Years 9 and 10, talking to your child about their future has never been more important. For Year 9, these subject selections give them their first taste of academic freedom in choosing two elective subjects. The Science Faculty offer two Year 9 electives, the very popular iSTEM is a 200-hour elective that builds the skills that students will need for the jobs of tomorrow, such as critical thinking, problem solving, coding, robotics and much more. Marine and Aquaculture is an engaging subject that delves into the aquatic world, looking at how humans interact with the ocean and it’s many creatures. For Year 10 students, the conversation is much more serious. Students will be challenged with the task of selecting the subjects that they will study through Year 11 and 12. For 2021 the Science Faculty will be offering Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Physics, Investigating Science and Marine Studies. A student can study any combination of each subject and we strongly suggest that parents/carers discuss subject choices with their child carefully. If you need any advice, feel free to make contact with the friendly Science Faculty staff either in person or via phone.

New blood in the Faculty

The Science Faculty would like to welcome Mr Smith to the team. With our fearless leader, Mrs Cohen filling as Stage 5 Deputy, Mr Smith will be teaching Science for the remainder of 2020. After completing his final university Professional Experience with us earlier this year, he was quickly snapped up by the PE Faculty for a term, but is now in his natural environment. Mr Smith brings fresh ideas to the faculty and has already been busily organising the 2020 National Paper Aeroplane Competition at the school (watch this space!). Mr McKay will be steering the Science ship as Head Teacher for the remainder of 2020, in Mrs Cohen’s absence.

What a Week!

This years’ annual National Science Week concluded last Friday.

Years 7 to 10 students participated in a myriad of fun and engaging activities in class, with all students getting in and having a real go in the name of Science. Whilst our efforts were hampered this year by COVID-19 restrictions, the students were still able to get their hands dirty and enjoy some basic practical lessons.

National Science Week is a great way for the school community to get involved in Science and try and learn more about the everyday world around them.

As camps and trips have been on the backburner recently, it was great to get out and celebrate our second Employment Lunch. The purpose of the lunch was to celebrate the students’ achievements in finding work or applying for work.

Nine of the lads joined Employment Officer, Josh T, and myself for lunch at Collegians at Port Kembla. The boys in employment ranged from Lachlan K in Year 12, who has completed all requirements for his School Based Traineeship, to Dom C in Year 10 who only completed his first official shift at Kmart the day before.

It was great to see the boys talk about their different experiences in work and how they had transferable skills that helped improved their education at school.

To finish off the lunch we had a quick tour of the South Coast Regional Manager and Employment Officer’s office, where the key message was “Once a Clontarf boy, always a Clontarf boy”, and that we would help support the boys through the rest of their school life and into full time employment.
