DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Attendance Matters Please provide the school with justified reasons for your child’s absences, including lateness to school. This can be done by either returning absence letters, a note explaining lateness or by phoning the school on 4261 4011. Parents are asked to remind their children to check in their bags as a lot of notes are not being returned. Notes not being returned will cause either large numbers of unjustified absences on your child’s Semester One report or involvement from the Home School Liaison Officers. You also have the option to return the SMS messages that are sent each day if your child is absent from school. Please discuss the importance of attendance with your child and the importance of returning absence letters. We value open communication with our community.

WELLBEING

c

An Important Message to Parents and Carers At Kanahooka High School we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone.

You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone.

The following information from Bullying. No Way! includes tips on what to do if your child talks to you about bullying. Parents and carers know their children best and know the best way to tailor communication to their needs. Adapt these tips to what works for you and your child.

If your child talks to you about bullying: Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need: who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.

Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.

Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.

Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to help your child feel more confident.

Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher, Year Adviser, or Deputy Principal. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety. Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important.

If you are looking for support for yourself to deal with a bullying situation, you will find ideas on the Bullying. No Way! website for parents. There are also resources and policies on the NSW Department of Education website. Please feel free to contact the school if you would like to discuss any aspect of our approach to preventing bullying. Thanks for your support to make Kanahooka High School a great school for everyone.

SCIENCE

The term is well and truly underway. Year 8 and 9 have just completed their first assessment task.

Year 7 and 10 will be completing their tasks over the next week or two. A reminder to all students to revise their class notes in preparation for their assessment tasks. If you are absent on the day of a task, please see your teacher for the correct illness/misadventure procedures. In Week 8, Friday 22 March, Year 10 Science will be attending

Luna Park to investigate their understanding of Motion. Please

make sure all notes and money are returned now so you don’t

miss out. This will be a fantastic day, full of fun and adventure.

We have had some excellent activities happening in Science this term.

Students in STEM are creating rockets, race cars, sustainable houses, shade structures and much more. If you have any 1.25L bottles you could donate, please drop them in as they are used to construct our bottle rockets. This year, in Term, our KHS Science Fair will be back, bigger and better then ever. Now is the time to start thinking about your project ideas. There will be more information to come regarding this fantastic annual event. Stay tuned.

SCIENCE

Gert the Stick Insect We would love to announce the newest member of the Science Faculty family, the wonderful Gert, the Giant Prickly insect, or for the Science boffins out there, Extatosoma Tiaratum. She has been a wonderful addition to our classroom and the students have definitely fallen in love with her. Gert has a wonderful new tank, which was graciously donated by Jennifer B (7 Science K), which the students have been busy filling with her favourite food, eucalyptus leaves. Her favourite class 9W went exploring around the school grounds to find a special kind of leaf, which our school has in abundance. We also gathered a few sticks, rocks and soil to make Gert feel right at home. Did you know that if there is no male present, Leaf Insects can still lay identical female eggs without fertilisation? This is great news because we are hoping to have a small squad for Gert to hang with in her spare time.

CLONTARF

Kanahooka Clontarf Academy currently has 36 boys registered.

The first few weeks of operations in the Kanahooka Clontarf Academy has been based around relationship building, and getting the boys used to rules and expectations. We have begun morning training sessions (Tuesday and Thursday at 7.30am) and hold afternoon activities every Monday and Wednesday which include fishing, ping-pong tournament and touch football. Our first couple of overnight camps for the boys are coming up, with major focus on improving attendance. We have begun morning pick-ups to assist the boys getting to school.

Hunter - It was sad about the story of Harvey’s rescue but then he was given a new home. Charlotte - It made me want to work in the RSPCA when I get older. Jacob - It was very informative and we learnt about what to do if you see any abuse or cruelty. All students really
