LODGE INFORMATION
Ladies and Members:
The month of May
was full of excitement at the lodge with every-one working and enjoy-
ing the activities. The Inaugural Ball was just
perfect and fun. Then, we held our Chili and
Bean Cook-Off- great food - and I saw lots of folks having a good
time. And how about that cakewalk???? The
ladies did a tremendous job selling all those
cakes. Mothers were
given the royal treat-ment on Mother‘s Day
thanks to Mike Smith and crew with a deli-cious brunch meal.
It‘s exciting to watch a team working on a pro-
ject together, sharing ideas, making decisions and not always agree-
ing but building friend-ships and getting to
know each other. When the project is complete
the huge feeling of pride that has devel-oped from the accom-
plishments of working as a team.
Invite your family and friends to be a part of
our team.
We wel-
come fresh
new ideas
and energy
they can
bring.
Fraternally yours,
Lanora Turner

I Am Old Glory
I am Old Glory: For more than eleven score years I have been the
banner of hope and freedom for generation after generation of
Americans. Born amid the flames of America’s fight for freedom, I
am the symbol of a country that has grown
from a little group of thirteen colonies to a
united nation of fifty sovereign states.
Planted firmly on the high pinnacle of
American Faith my gently fluttering folds
have proved an inspiration to untold mil-
lions. Men have followed me into battle
with unwavering courage. They have
looked upon me as a symbol of national
unity. They have prayed that they and
their fellow citizens might continue to enjoy the life, liberty and pur-
suit of happiness, which have been granted to every American as the
heritage of free men. So long as men love liberty more than life it-
self; so long as they treasure the priceless privileges bought with the
blood of our forefathers; so long as the principles of truth, justices
and charity for all remain deeply rooted in human hearts, I shall
continue to be the enduring banner of the United States of America.
Originally written by Marine Master Sergeant Percy Webb (1879 –1945) Sergeant Webb wrote this famous
Flag tribute in the original ―Our Flag‖ booklet distributed at the Chicago World‘s Fair, 1933.

The BPO Elks Flag Day Ceremony will begin on Satur-
day, June 14, at noon at the Lodge. Please arrive by 11:45
a.m. so that everything can be in place to begin at noon.
Sheri Miller has a fantastic program planned, along with a
few surprises; don’t miss this year’s ceremony!
This is an excellent opportunity to provide a bit of
flag protocol education and sense of reverence regarding our
the symbol of our country to those too young to have
learned during a time when citizenship was considered just
as important as math, science and English. Since standard-
ized testing was instituted, few ―frivolous‖ subjects have
survived the curriculum; it wasn‘t until our children started
getting obese that those overseeing state curriculums starting
realizing the errors of removing recess time from the school
day.
I fear that the same is true of the ―citizenship‖ les-
sons that students used to learn in school. Unfortunately,
since most of these lessons were interwoven throughout the
day and school year, the damage caused from the students
not receiving this instruction is not as clearly correlated. It
is clear, however, that many students do not know right
from wrong, do not have a problem with cheating or using
someone else‘s work and do not know even the most basic
tenets of being a good neighbor. These results have
been documented in many studies conducted on the un-
der 25 generation.
This leaves an educational gap that the Elks can and
should be able to fill. Providing information about our
Flag will be the first step of many on this journey.
