As winter releases its grip and the trees and flowers begin to bloom, it’s a time that feels full of life. But of course, as Christians, we celebrate the supernatural resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Far more than a natural cycle or a process of new life growing from the scattered, crushed seeds of other plants, his new life is once and for all. And as his disciples, we have access to that new life in us as we die with him—to the world and our human wants—and are born again in his Holy Spirit. I read an article recently in the Wall Street Journal that had a deceptive title: “Praise God, American Churches are Dying.” We all know the story: local churches are not attracting new people like they once were and are aging as a result. The bills get harder to pay and the strategies for growth are increasingly burdensome. But it ended on a very encouraging note that I did not expect to find in the Wall Street Journal: “It’s important to realize that religion in the U.S. is far from dead. With a vibrant, new church landscape on the scene, there will be no shortage of options to choose from as millions of Americans again find their footing in faith. A selection of churches may be dying, but their replacements are alive, well, and regenerating in ways the American church has never seen before.” Because the Spirit of God is just as powerful and active today as in any generation. Many of the traditions and routines that we have associated with church will never be the same again. But as we center ourselves on the Living Hope of Jesus Christ, on the missional purpose of God to be a light to the nations and a blessing to the community around us, we always have the opportunity to be part of the new life that Holy Spirit is calling people to receive. May we be a people who offer hope and new life in the resurrection power of Jesus, our Lord, our savior, and our friend. Happy Spring! ~Pastor Trenton Prieshoff
