Together, we here at Prospect/Marvin Chapel have accomplished such a milestone, one year of working, praying, laughing, learning and collaborating together. A lot has happened over the past year, too much to summarize here, but it has been a wonderful journey so far. You may not remember my very first sermon a year ago, which was entitled, Shall We Dance? Together! At that time, I shared that I loved line dancing and have regularly attended a class for the past three years. After my back injury last year, it took a few months before I was able to go back. When I did, I was out of practice making mis- steps and feeling very uncoordinated, but with time I got back into the rhythm. We began our dance together feeling a bit uncoordinated and made a few mis-steps along the way, but I’m so glad that we have been working together to per-fect our dance. While we are not perfect, we have begun to figure out each other’s rhythms. We have learned to determine who will lead different ministries, and who should follow. We are learning how to manage mistakes, and even learning to overcome stepping on each other's toes. Many have chosen to stay the course and join in, while some have left and we miss them. And while we are doing

July/August 2017 Anniversariesareimportantcelebrationsmarkingsignificantmilestonesonthisjourneycalledlife.Together,wehereatProspect/MarvinChapelhaveaccomplishedsuchamilestone,oneyearofworking,praying,laughing,learningandcollaboratingtogether.Alothashappenedoverthepastyear,toomuchtosummarizehere,butithasbeenawonderfuljourneysofar.Youmaynotremembermyveryfirstsermonayearago,whichwasentitled,ShallWeDance?Together!Atthattime,IsharedthatIlovedlinedancingandhaveregularlyattendedaclassforthepastthreeyears.Aftermyback
injurylastyear,ittookafewmonthsbeforeIwasabletogoback.WhenIdid,Iwasoutofpracticemakingmis-stepsandfeelingveryuncoordinated,butwithtimeIgotbackintotherhythm.Webeganourdancetogetherfeelingabituncoordinatedandmadeafewmis-stepsalongtheway,butI’msogladthatwehavebeenworkingtogethertoper-fectourdance.Whilewearenotperfect,wehavebeguntofigureouteachother’srhythms.Wehavelearnedtodeterminewhowillleaddifferentministries,andwhoshouldfollow.Wearelearninghowtomanagemistakes,andevenlearningtoovercomesteppingoneachother'stoes.Manyhavechosentostaythecourseandjoinin,whilesomehaveleftandwemissthem.Andwhilewearedoing

agoodjob,westillhavemoretolearn.Wecan’tstopencouragingeachother.Wecan’tstoptalkingtogether,becausethat’swhenwestartstumbling.Wehavesomeroughpathsahead,butbyworkingtogether,wewillmakeitthrough.1Corinthians12tellsusthateverymemberisimportantandanindispensibleparttothewell-beingofthebody.Nooneismoreimportantthananother,therefore,nooneislessimportantthananother.Verse27remindsusthat“Ifonepartsuffers,allthepartssufferwithit;ifonepartgetstheglory,allthepartscelebratewithit.ItisonlythroughthegraceofGodthateachpartbelongsandworkswelltogether,andthat’swhatwecelebrate.Mayweberemindedthatinallweundertaketodotogether,whetherinwordordeed,thatwecontinuetodoeverythingtoglorifyGod,tobeChrist-like,andtoallowtheHolySpirittoguideouractions.ThewordsinpartfromJudyChicagointheMergerPoemonaplaqueinProspectLibrary-(givenbySuzannePorter-Missionary2000-2012),providesinspirationforourgoalofworkingtogether:
Andthenallthathasdivideduswillmerge
Andthencompassionwillbeweddedtopower
Andthenallwillcareforthesickandtheweakandtheold
AndthenallwillnourishtheyoungAndthenallwillcherishlife’screatureAndthenallwillliveinharmonywitheachotherandtheearth
AndtheneverywherewillbecalledEdenonceagain.
TogetherwehavedonemarvelousworkandIamexcitedlylookingforwardtogaininghigherheightsasweexploreandenjoythisnextyear.Letuscontinueforwardwithcompassion,kindness,hospitality,humility,gentleness,patienceandmostofalllove.Enjoyasafeandhealthysummer!

"WeareOne:ConnectedinCovenant"wasthethemeforthisannualconference.BishopEasterling,thefirstwomantoleadtheBaltimore-WashingtonConferenceopenedthe233rdsession,May31-June2,atWardmanParkHotel,DC.Priortotheopeningsession,laitygatheredtogetherinaseparatesession.BishopEasterlingexpressedaneedtoelevateclergy-laypartnershipindiscipleship.Conferenceopenedwithover1,400UnitedMethodistsandfourlanguagesallsinging"They'llKnowWeAreChristiansByOurLove."TheBishopspokeofGod,whocallsuponthefaithfultotrustandobey,turnawayfromtheold,andtowalkwithGodtowardasacredandbrightfuture.Sheremindedusthatwewillbefacingsomeharddecisionsinthenearfuture.WewerethenunitedinCommunion.TheBiblestudysessionsfocusedonEphesians4:1-6andPaul'sthoughtsaboutChristiansasGod'sartworkandsignsofhope.“ThechurchistheinstrumentofGod’smissionintheworld…andwhentheworldlooksatthechurch,itshouldgetaglimpseofGod’sKingdom.”Congregationsmakefourpromisesinthebaptismalcovenanttolove,serveandcareforeachother,whichheurgedchurchestokeepvisiblewhilediscussingGod’svisionforthechurch.Animportantpartofannualsessionisholyconferencing,atimeofconversationanddebate,shapingthenatureandpoliciesofthechurch.Duringthesessions,manyissueswerediscussedoverthetwodays.Fourresolutions,andfiveamendmentsto
