One system – two versions

The Titrando System can be operated in two different ways. This results in the two basic versionspresented below.

Touch Control = user comfortTouch Control is a decidedly ergonomic and modern operatingelement. You can hold it in your hand, put it on the lab bench or use a holder (option) to attach it to a rod or hook it onto thewall. These last two possibilities save space and also protect theTouch Control from chemicals.

With a single Touch Control you can operate up to threeTitrandos.

Titrando and PC – a harmonic duoThe Titrando is of course PC-compatible. The Titrando Systemconcludes a development that started with the one-line instru-ment dialog. No matter whether you operate the Titrando withthe Touch Control and your fingers or via PC and a mouse – bothappearance and operation are practically identical. Methods anddeterminations are 100% compatible. Whether you store them inthe Titrando itself or in a PC, full exchangeability is guaranteed.

A single PC equipped with the PC Control software can controlup to three Titrandos.

STAT titration with the Titrando

STAT titrationThe determination of enzyme activity (lipase, trypsin, etc.) or the release kinetics of antacid tabletsrequire a titrator that rapidly adjusts to a preset pH value and keeps it constant for a long period.The controller of the 842 Titrando has been optimized for this task and is one of the best on themarket. It can also be used to determine the kinetics of acid-base or redox reactions.

Tandem dosingTandem dosing is a new feature. To avoid dosing interruption when the buret is refilled during thetitration, a second buret immediately takes over. In this way rapid reactions with a high reagentconsumption can be monitored with maximum accuracy. Tandem dosing is also available for sim-ple and monitored dosing.

Comprehensive documentationExtended evaluation criteria allow the determination of the dosing rate and therefore reactionspeed throughout the whole measuring period or in predefined time windows. In addition, fixedendpoints are available for the following parameters: volume, time and measured value.

Monitored dosingIn the synthesis laboratory different problems are faced to those encountered in titration. Here aparticular pH value must be kept constant or multiple dosing has to be carried out under exactlydefined conditions. This means that a certain volume of a solution must be added within a fixedtime. In addition to controlled dosing, the parameters pH (or potential) and temperature have tobe continuously recorded, thus providing complete documentation of the synthesis procedure.

Dosino = dosing pumpDosing can also be carried out without interruption with two Dosinos in tandem operation. In thisway the 842 Titrando becomes a high-precision chemical-resistant pump.

Everything under control If a monitored parameter should infringe the set limits, the user can decide whether dosing shouldbe continued or interrupted and then continued manually or automatically, again observing thelimits.

ControllerAs an innovation the 842 Titrando can perform control tasks. External devices can be controlledwith the aid of freely programmable TTL signals or communication via RS 232. This means that it is possible to remotely control external heating and cooling devices, pumps or similar equipment.

Example of a neutralization process:1. DOS Addition of 150 mL reagent in 10 min with temperature monitoring2. Pause 5 min under stirring3. STAT Adjust pH = 7.5 with temperature monitoring4. SET Post reaction, for example, during 10 min; endpoint pH = 7.5

SET ModeThe 842 Titrando additionally has a SET mode; this means that po-tentiometric titrations can be carried out to a predefined endpoint(pH or potential). Typical applications for the SET mode are determin-ing the p and m values in water analysis.

pH meter included!At 0.001 pH the resolution of the measuring inputs of the 842Titrando is identical to that of our high-precision pH meters. Ready-to-use methods for pH measurement and electrode calibration arestored in the instrument. In addition, the electrode data as well asthe «calibration history» of each of the used sensors are stored. Just as with any other pH meter you can, of course, also measurethe potential and the temperature.

Call up the method – press startMethod handling is a central feature of the Titrando’s operator-friendliness. Standard user methodsenable familiarization with the system and allow the Titrando to be used immediately. By using ourmethods you can profit from our many years of experience in the titration field. All titrationmethods developed on Metrohm Titrinos can be converted into Titrando methods automaticallyusing a PC.

As storage media for your methods, sample data and results there are the Titrando itself, a memorycard* or a PC with its numerous possibilities. This allows complete storage security to be achieved,with the prevention of method and data loss, plus an increase in operational security.

Intelligence creates transparencyOperating the Titrando System is simple and intuitive. The operator guidance system can be regar-ded as exemplary. In addition, the following tools make life easier for the Titrando user:• The «Quick Access» function (direct parameters) allows direct access to the parameters required

for the given application. These parameters can come from a wide range of different areas of theinstrument program. This means that it is no longer necessary for you to click your way throughdifferent operating levels! «Quick Access» is invaluable for routine analysis.

• The «Help» fixed key shows a context-related help text in the display.• The «Follow me» help function is available when working with a PC. Continuous explanations

about the current surroundings are given in a separate window and further possible proceduresare indicated.

• The standard user methods can be modified to suit your requirements. Method templates and calculation formula templates are available for developing your own methods. Methods can bestored under meaningful method names (32 characters) and structured directories can be used;this makes sorting, identification and searching much easier.

• Whereas in the expert dialog all settings are available, the routine dialog can be freely configured,i.e. it can be custom-made to meet the requirements of the particular user. This means that userscan load their «profiles» from the personal Keycard and see only those operating elements thatthey actually need.

The Titrando puts an end to puzzling out the meaning of coded error messages. It tells you what is going on in clear text. Not only this; it also suggests suitable measures for remedying any faults.

The space-saving DosinoTitrating means dosing intelligently. With the 842 Titrando you dose with Dosinos and DosingUnits that are attached directly onto the reagent bottle. This means that dosing requires no addi-tional bench space. Thanks to adapters, any reagent bottle can be used directly.

The Dosino houses the latest state-of-the-art electronics and micromechanics. The Dosing Unit canbe exchanged within seconds; thanks to its transparent housing any bubbles that may be presentin the dosing cylinder can be seen immediately and the valve position is always shown. Rinsingand preparation of the Dosing Unit can be carried out automatically; manual dismantling and clea-ning are not necessary.

The Dosino – the optimal dosing systemThanks to the «Empty» command the Dosino can be emptied completely; this avoids the cumber-some opening and cleaning of the Dosing Unit.

Once the reagent is used up, the remaining content of the cylinder can be transferred directly tothe bottle or the titration cell. The empty reagent bottle is then replaced, the Titrando executesthe «Prep» routine and the titer determination of the new reagent can be started. In contrast tothe Exchange Unit, multiple rinsing before titer determination is not necessary, which saves timeand reagents.

The Data Chip makes the difference

Brainy dosing elements with certificationThe Dosing Units set new standards with regard to reliability. In-creased reliability not only saves you money, but also means few problems. Intelligence «en miniature» in the form of an inconspic-uous Data Chip makes this possible. This chip is present in every new Dosing Unit. The Titrando automatically reads from it all thedata that it needs to carry out the titration properly, i.e. type of re-agent, titer, last titer determination, shelf-life data and much more. In addition, the Titrando compares the data it has obtained with the selected method and carries out a plausibility test. If the result is negative then a clear error message appears.

The 800 Dosino has a simple but cleverly devised display consistingof two LEDs that keep you up-to-date about the condition of thedosing system. On the Dosing Unit both the cylinder volume and the valve position are clearly visible.

In addition, the newly developed Dosing Units offer the followingadvantages:• Every Dosing Unit is provided with serial and cylinder numbers

and is supplied with a certificate of its own.• The Titrando checks the preset intervals for the titer determina-

tion of the titrant. This ensures that work is always carried outwith the exact titer.

Via the four contact pins on the 807 Dosing Unit'sunderside (right) the Titrando receives the informationstored on the Data Chip.

The Titrando in the modern laboratory

tiamo = titration and more!Instead of PC Control software the new tiamo titration software is now available; you can use it to draw up and manage methods, control the Titrando and manage the results. You can also carryout parallel titrations, i.e. one Titrando can control two measuring stations. tiamo also offers fea-tures that are of particular advantage for larger titration systems, such as the client-server databaseor the possibility of controlling several systems at the same time from a PC. Although this softwarehas been designed for controlling complex systems, it is characterized by its easy operation.

Data management is knowledge managementData must always be available: either for direct information, for transfer to a data system, for further processing or for an audit. The data that your Titrando System provides you with can beprinted out and stored in a conventional manner. However, all advanced data management func-tions are available, for example storage on a PCMCIA card1 that is simply inserted in the TouchControl, in the PCMCIA port of the PC or an appropriate card reader.

When you work with PC Control or tiamo, you can use all the storage options offered by the PCworld, for example hard drives, diskettes, CD ROMs, Intranet…

On request the Titrando can produce a machine-readable PC/LIMS report. One thing is clear: Asfor data storage and transfer, the Titrando is a state-of-the-art instrument.

Lab LinkIf you want to connect your Titrando System directly to a superior data system, there is nothing in the way: Lab Link opens up internal networks (Intranet, LIMS2, LAN3) to the Titrando and makes it Internet-compatible, with all that this implies. For long-term storage you can use, for example,tools such as NuGenesis Scientific Data Management System and CyberLab, and this without a PCbeing connected to the Titrando. The downloading of methods from company-specific websites is another application of Lab Link.

Quality and compatibility

Compatibility and traceabilityGLP, GMP, 21 CFR Part 11 are becoming increasingly important in day-to-day laboratory life. The Titrando System is entirely oriented towards quality management in the laboratory and offers the following possibilities:• Each time that it is switched on the Titrando System carries

out a self-diagnosis.• If it has been programmed accordingly then the instrument

will remind you about any validation or service work that is due.

• You can enter limits for results; their observance will be checkedfor each determination.

• The titer of the titrant can be monitored as a function of time in both tabular form or as a graph, similar to a control card.

• The «calibration history» of the sensors can be called up. This means, for example, that alterations to the sensor caused by aging can be recognized before they affect the results.

• All changes to the methods are documented; traceability is guaranteed.

The Titrando allows strict control of rights of access using login and password. The requirements defined in FDA Regulation 21 CFR Part 11 regarding «electronic signature» and «electronic record» are fulfilled in the stand-alone system using Touch Controlas well as in the version controlled via PC. This also applies to the other points contained in this regulation, namely the protection of electronic records against accidental or intentional alteration

and complete traceability. The Titrando with Touch Control is the only stand-alone titration systemwith Audit Trail. For long-term archiving a machine-readable PC/LIMS report is available.

Quality management at MetrohmQuality has always been extremely important for Metrohm. On 5th November 1993 our companyachieved the ISO 9001 certificate of quality. The Metrohm quality management system is continuallybeing perfected and checked by both internal and external audits.

The Titrando System is modern. This also applies to the object-oriented development system used inits creation. The Touch Control as a color display and operational element is unique, as are the manyother innovations of the Titrando System.

Perfect modularityThe possibilities for upgrading the Titrando System are nothing short of amazing. First the barefigures: The basic unit consists of a Titrando with one measuring interface. This basic unit can be extended to form a super-titrator that controls 12 burets and boasts 6 galvanically separatedmeasuring interfaces. Between these two extremes lies the whole spectrum of Titrando possibili-ties. Among them you will certainly find a Titrando System that can solve your particular applica-tion problem in an optimal way. At the same time you have the certainty that your Titrando System will master all your future applications as it is fully upgradable. As a result you can view the futurewith confidence.

Automation pays dividends!Increasing sample numbers, time-consuming sample preparation steps and unattended overnightoperation are good reasons for using sample changers. The 842 Titrando has the necessary intelli-gence to control sample changers and offers – together with the 814 USB Sample Processor and815 Robotic USB Sample Processor XL – a high degree of automation at low investment costs.

It’s so simple: You connect the sample changer to the Titrando’s USB port and the world of auto-mation opens up to you.
