To follow the light, the wise men had to be men of faith which gave them the courage to move out of their comfort zone in search of something greater. On New YearsDay, we made resolutions to conquer anything that had enslaved us this past year. We also claimed our inheritance as heirs to the promise of God for his adopted sons. God Bless You!!

Reflection Last weekend, we pointed out that the mission of the Savior in sharing our humanity was to raise us up to

share in his divinity. So, through the power in his blood – shed for the first time in circumcision and the name: Jesus

taken on the eighth day, he elevated us from slavery to son-ship through adoption hence we became heirs to the

promises made to the old Israelites.

Today’s celebration: Epiphany marks the manifestation of God in the form of human flesh through Jesus

Christ his son. This ancient feast of the church is linked to the visit of the wise men (Magi) from the east led by a star

to the new born King. In the manifestation of his humanity, God also manifested the new reality of slaves made free;

sons made heirs and humans invited to divinity. These must shine forth their light – their dignity for others to see.

In the first reading, therefore, Isaiah tells us that the light has come: “Arise in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light

has come, the glory of the Lord shines on you.” The gospel tells us that the light is Jesus Christ: “Where is the new

born King of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” Finally, the second reading

tells us that this light is for everybody: “ . . . it has now been revealed . . . that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the

same body and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel”. Today, you are that wise one on whom

the light has shown and you have been invited to follow the light and become that light.

To follow the light, the wise men had to be men of faith which gave them the courage to move out of their

comfort zone in search of something greater. Their outward pilgrimage was an expression of their inward journey as

they set out and go forth towards the unknown, the uncertain, on paths filled with hidden dangers, apparent trials,

challenges and problems.

On New Years’ Day, we made resolutions to conquer anything that had enslaved us this past year. We also

claimed our inheritance as heirs to the promise of God for his adopted sons. It does not mean that this year will be

devoid of life’s struggles and challenges. It means that this year you should view them differently. They are not

obstacles to bring you down but stepping stones to help you climb higher to reach your goal. You become light to

dispel darkness because you have been empowered to become victorious and no longer a victim. So, rise and shine!

The Epiphany of the Lord – January 4-5, 2020

Observations and dreams.

Magi. Looking. Longing. Star at its rising. Traveling with

gifts. Asking for helpful directions. Seeing the child. Giving

gifts. Here is the point of the “We Three Kings” story: All

people reflect God’s radiance. Even people from the

east. Even outsiders. Gentiles and Jews all belong to the one

Kingdom, Saint Paul reminds us. Them and us are one

because God is One. Let us sing Psalm 72 all week: “Lord,

every nation on earth will adore you.”

—What signs (stars) do I see calling me to act?

—What gifts (of self, of things) will I give away? −−Who will I include in ________________?
