Research opportunities (grants)

3-year grant (for a PhD): metabolic modeling, optimization and control of fed-batch cultures of genetically modified bacteria (flexible start, probably November 1, 2009, in collaboration with Brussels University and the industry, experimental plant in FPMs)

1-year grant for a post-doc research in the field of dynamic optimization and control of SMB separation process (subject to an application by FNRS with deadline on September 30 – upon acceptance, the post should start in January 2010, in collaboration with Brussels University, experimental plant in FPMs)

FPMs also offers 1-year grants to start a PhD (other funding sources to be found later), in various fields, based on a candidature.

A joint research program between WBI and CONICYT

WBI = Wallonia- Brussels International

Aim of the program: Develop Joint PhD theses between Chilian Universities (CRUCH) and and French-speaking Belgian Universities (CREF)

Page 24: Faculté Polytechnique de Mons

Joint research programGeneral Information

• The grants are oriented to those students following PhD programs in any Chilean University integrating the CRUCH, desiring to make an internship in one of the French-speaking Belgian Universities associated to the CRef.

• The applicants must be regular students of a PhD program accredited at least for 4 years by the (CNA-Chile) in any of the Chilean universities associated to the CRUCH.

• The period of stay has a minimum of 5 months and a maximum of 18 months, and the visit must take place within the four years of PhD program followed by the student.

Page 25: Faculté Polytechnique de Mons

Joint research programGeneral Information

• The applicants must have two promoters: one in the university of origin and a second one in the Belgian university that takes him in. Both tutors direct together the development of the Thesis.

• Once the thesis is defended and approved by the jury, the applicant will obtain both degrees

Page 26: Faculté Polytechnique de Mons

Joint research programApplication profile

• Chilean nationality or if foreigner, resident in Chili.

• Regular student of a Doctoral program in a CRUCH university accredited for at least 4 years by the CNA-Chile.

• Be following at most the seventh semester of the PhD program.

• Had approved the qualification exam and the Thesis project in the university of origin at the closing of the application period.

• To certify the agreement of both promoters to co-supervise the PhD thesis.

• At the moment of the visit, the student must certify his knowledge of French or English language according to the needs of the stay.

Page 27: Faculté Polytechnique de Mons

Joint research programBenefits of the grant

• Monthly allocation of 900 € by the CONICYT and 300 € by the WBI to those students receiving no other grant (CONICYT, MECESUP, etc.).

• Those students receiving a national grant, will receive a complementary allocation given by the CONICYT (to up to 300 €) and by the WBI (up to 300 €)

• A round-trip ticket Chili-Belgium.

• Medical and civil responsibility assurances during the visit to be paid by the WBI.

• The registration fees at the Belgian University to be paid by CONICYT (up to 800 €).
