Group Assignment (9% of course marks).

The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to relate the mathematical concepts

that are covered in class to the real world engineering problems. You have to find a

sample case study where the mathematical concepts are used effectively to solve an

engineering problem. In your assignment, you must:

    1. Identify one or more mathematical concepts of your interest.2. State how these concepts are actually used in the case study you selected.

For example, you may choose the topic of complex numbers and the case study that

you have selected might be related to how the concept is being used to calculate

power dissipation of an element in a circuit involving alternating currents. If possible, include some sample calculations as to how the concepts are used in your case study.

Include some computer simulations to validate your calculations (optional).

Marks for the assignment will be given based on the criteria explained in Table 2:

    Table 2: Marking criteria

    Subject Marks criteria %

    1. Selection of

    a relevant case

    study and clear

    explanationprovided.

3: Relevant case study and clear explanation with appropriate

    diagrams are provided.

1-2: Explanation is provided but still difficult to understand the

case study presented or case study is not entirely relevant.0: Answer difficult to read. Points are not clear. Plagiarism

    detected.

    3

    2. Providing

    sample

    calculations

    and correct

    implementation

    of the chosen

    concepts.

3-4: Sample calculations are done excellently. Correct solution

    found. Solutions are validated.

1-2: Some errors found in the calculations.

0: No sample calculations. A lot of errors or plagiarism

    detected.

    3

    3. Properreferences are

    provided with

    correct citation

    methods used.

3: Proper references are provided with correct citation methodsused.

1-2: Too few references used. References are not cited

    properly.

0: No references provided. A lot of errors in citation or

    plagiarism detected.
