Gen. appr.: installation + commissioning in 3 phases

1. SPS extraction / TT40 (up to TED400353)

2. Transfer line TI 8 (up to TED87765)

3. LHC injection (up to TDI (no, up to IP 8 !))

disentangle work + pot. problems; build upon previous experience

debug full-size installationset up trajectory correctioncheck behaviour of line (time-dependent effects ?)measure optical characteristicstest new software (basic debugged ingredients of definitive system)

test extraction equipmenttest extraction performance / check for SPS errors (p-to-p repr., drifts ?)testbed for bulk equipment control (MS, PO, BI, VAC, …)testbed for new software (could still do with temporary solutions)

set up injection equipment

learn to work with new software (seamless link with LHC BI,

preparation for integration with LHC first turns (inj. osc., orbit FB, ...)access + safety systems fully functionalinterlocks primordial (at least at higher intensities)

Provisions for sector test (temporary warm line)

• « replace LHC » between MKI and IP8 by warm line

• install injection elements definitively

• reproduce geometry (replace D1 and D2 by small bends)

• match to TI 8 and arc optics

• use TI 2 material (magnets, supplies, vacuum, …)

• locate supplies in UA87• definitive vacuum ch. ?

TI 2 + TI 8 + TT41 1 new SPS (w/o RF, all usual ingredients + their controls)

Beam parameters (energy, intensity, emittance)

Apertures ( good observation, trajectory correction, interlocks)

Required delivery precisions (on CNGS target, on LHC orbit) +

Efficiency (LHC injection good observation, feedbacks ?)

High demands on (early) operational availability + throughput

Operational rigour (“fine-tuning” settings, bypassing interlocks, skipping a step in a sequence: know well what you’re doing, follow the checklists !)

Control system + BI need to be ready early (conc. on understanding TL + LHC)

Access system + interlocks must be capable to handle varying conditions safely and efficiently (multi-cycling, instant access)

Logistics (amount of material, manpower sharing, time/access sharing)

No cutting-edge technology

No problems from multi-pass

Main challenges

Page 20: Projects Overview

Projects Overview / V. Mertens / LTI and CNGS Controls Review / 10. 7. 2001

What should this review achieve ?- Identify the systems that will be needed to control LTI and CNGS equipment - Examine the interfaces between these systems and the SPS and LHC accelerator controls - Identify areas where new initiatives are required

- Clarify controls responsibilities and milestones at all levels Clarify basic HW questions:- Location of electronics- Type + number of front ends- Network connections- Cables (to order + find space for)- ...

Define who does what and when:- Decision on the approach- Software writing- Coordination + follow-up

Instead of a summary ...

And, finally, if I could wish (or recommend) something:

Think about lifespan of operation (15 yrs ?)

Please no last minute rush - if you can avoid it.

Sector test is good test bed for LHC and new SW - try to make best use of it.
