Initiating Process Group

The key purpose of the initiating process group is to align the stakeholders expectations with the project's purpose.

• Determine phase/project goals• Obtain authorization to start phase/project• Determine initial scope• Identify constraints and assumptions• Select/assign project manager• Project statement of work• Define high-level resource requirements• Determine initial financial resources• Verify success criteria• Create project charter/ charter elements*• Obtain formal approval of charter

Exam tip: In the Initiating processes, understand the following:

• Staffing levels are low

• Costs are low

• Chance of success is low

• Risk is high

• Stakeholder influence is high

the main goal of the Planning process group is to create the Project Management Plan, other subsidiary management plans are also created here.

This includes subsidiary management plans for Scope, schedule, budget, quality, human resources, communications, risk, and procurement knowledge

The Executing Process Group consists of those processes performed to

complete the work defined in the project

management plan to satisfy the project

specifications. This Process Group involves

coordinating people and resources, managing

stakeholder expectations, as well as

integrating and performing the activities of

the project in accordance with the project

management plan.

The Monitoring and Controlling Process Group consists of those processes required to track, review, andorchestrate the progress and performance of the project

Exam Tip.

For the exam assume that: The project management plan and subsidiary plans are complete and realistic

You measure the project against defined metrics to determine how well the project is performing

You implement corrective actions for any variances

If there are deviations from the project management plan, that is the responsibility of the project manager, and the Project manager is responsible for correcting those deviations without issuing a change request. CRs should be used only as a last resort in this instance.

The Closing Process Group consists of those processes performed to conclude all activities across all ProjectManagement Process Groups to formally complete the project, phase, or contractual obligations

At project or phase closure, the following may occur:

Obtain acceptance by the customer or sponsor to formally close the project or phase,

Conduct post-project or phase-end review,

Record impacts of tailoring to any process, Document lessons learned,

Apply appropriate updates to organizational process assets,

Archive all relevant project documents in the project management information system (PMIS) to be used as historical data,

Close out all procurement activities ensuring termination of all relevant agreements, and Perform team members’ assessments and release project resources.
