Project ConceptWe will support you in the preparation of your business case. We’ll help you scope out the benefits of the project, along with the requirements. We’ll also help you explore what options you have to meet those requirements. We’ll identify key stakeholders, and make sure that you have a full understanding of all the risks and opportunities associated with the project.

Project Defi nitionFulfilling the role as project manager, we will take the responsibility for the development of the concept into a robust plan that clearly defines project outputs and how they will be delivered.

We will prepare a project management plan. We’ll focus on the scope definition, estimate the extent of the project programme, set governance for the project, and indicate what resources and team skills are required to ensure the project is successful.

We’ll also work through all options to ensure we have thoroughly explored risks, and estimated the full project cost.

Project DevelopmentAt this stage, we take responsibility for the implementation of the project management plan, and for the overall delivery of the project. We’ll carefully monitor progress to ensure that we meet the requirements set out in the business case.

We establish a team of project managers, document controllers, and experts in handover, planning, risk and opportunity, change management, cost control, procurement and quality management. This integrated approach ensures that we can monitor progress most effectively, and work collaboratively to ensure project success.

At this point, we’ll also capture, consolidate and disseminate lessons learned, accept the final report and confirm project closure.

Case studies

With 73.4 million passengers arriving at and departing from Heathrow Airport in 2014, baggage handling is a key and complex issue which has seen a lot of investment in recent years. The Terminal 3 Integrated Baggage project is the latest development in this investment, creating a new state-of-the-art facility which enables both direct and transfer bags to be processed in one connected facility.

Having been appointed in October 2011, our experts were responsible for providing integrated project management services on the project.

Initially we developed the Logistics & Production plans for one of the most challenging airside locations at Heathrow Airport, surrounded by airfield roads, passengers, live baggage operation to the south, all during the Olympic Games embargo throughout 2012. These plans, together with rigorous Stakeholder Management were critical in ensuring the airport operations continued without any unplanned disruption throughout the project. Since the construction process took place in the middle of the UK’s busiest airport, the logistics of having multiple parties on site delivering different components in the construction sequence was a challenge which had to be managed efficiently.

We were appointed to provide project management across one of the most successful flood alleviation projects in Scotland – the Moray Flood Alleviation project. Delivered under budget and already providing significant return on investment for Moray Council, the £180m scheme has taken over 15 years to complete and has protected thousands of homes and businesses in four towns across the Moray region of Scotland – Lhanbryde, Rothes, Forres and Elgin.

Royal HaskoningDHV project managed all five schemes from feasibility to construction as well as one of the schemes through construction. At the peak of the programme, more than 180 people from Royal HaskoningDHV were working on the Elgin scheme alone.

In the 10 years since the first scheme was completed, the Moray Council has already seen a return on investment of over 50% of the total investment made in the scheme. Benefits across all five projects have already brought savings of £86.4million from flood prevention.

Lessons learned along the way have also enabled Royal HaskoningDHV to make substantial cost savings for the Council, resulting in the entire programme being delivered 7% under budget.

Royal HaskoningDHV offered a wealth of expertise on each individual scheme including the design of flood prevention schemes, consultation on required transport changes in each location, as well as environmental analysis. On the project

management side, there were three key areas in which the team was involved: stakeholder management, risk management, and ECC project manager.

Peter Haslam, Project Sponsor, Moray Council said, “I challenged the team to deliver flood alleviation and complement the environment. My measure of success was the scheme should be ‘invisible’ and prevent flooding. Not only was the challenge met, it was delivered ahead of programme and under budget.”
