The place was Rome and the year 1510 when the first book ever on India was published by a European. The Bolognese author Ludovico De Varthema, left Venice in 1502, travelled extensively to the east of the Mediterranean Sea and reached the Indian peninsula, where he stayed for a long time. He chronicled his journeys in the volume first published in 1510. The exhibition also contains a large number of contemporary cartographic images by an anonymous traveller which dwells on the curious and fascinating aspects related to plants, animals and trade and life in general in the great Asian peninsula.
Event organized by Archivio di Stato (National Archives), Rome and IstitutoItaliano di Cultura, New Delhi incollaboration with National Library, Kolkata, and Consulate General of Italy, Kolkata.

Nena, a girl from the south of Italy, has to travel far from home to get her first job as a teacher. She is sad because she is having a serious love affair with someone from her village: they promise that nothing will change between them. And so she leaves, a little sad and a little curious about what is in store for her. But what she finds is completely different from what she imagined: a school isolated on a high mountain plain, wild children, people she has nothing in common with and a hostile environment. She sticks it out because of pride and because francesco loves her for her courage, until one cold february day when everything goes wrong, everything seems lost forever.
Event organized by the European Union Delegation in collaboration with the Embassies of the Member States.

The performance/concert joins the two projects Matrika and Enchanting Circles in a single musical stream. Matrika, a Sanskrit word, represents the Cosmic Mother, the Origin and is a trilogy of dances on three aspects of the feminine: Shakti, Matrika and Shekara. Enchanting Circles, a project on the singing drum, considered “a strong contribution to modern frame drumming” (Scott Robinson), is the fabric upon which Luisa Spagna weaves her dance. Music guides the flow of dance, its gestures and suggestions and dialogues.
Musician and ethnomusicologist, Paolo Pacciolla teaches ‘Ethnomusicology’ at the Conservatorio di Musica of Vicenza. His musical production includes The Singing Drum, a project on tuned hand drums and musical bows, solo and group recordings. Dance and researcher, Luisa Spagna has received training in classical ballet and in Indian classical dance styles of Odissi and Seraikella Chhau. She is the author of the dance project Racconti del Corpo, archetipi del femminile with which she explores the women myths and archetypes through choreographies, seminars and writings.

The paper will analyze some recent representations of the contemporary Italian cities. In particular, it will analyze from this point of view some recent reference works describing the role of the Italian cities in literature and their cultural and linguistic networks. Particular attention will be paid to the recently completed Atlante della letteratura italiana (‘Atlas of the Italian literature’, 2010-2012), that has tried to introduce a new way of looking at literature through the use of tables, maps and graphic representations. The paper will then compare those descriptions with the depictions of contemporary Italian cities that can be found in some recent movies and works of literature created by residents of Italy of foreign origin. Particular attention will be paid to the case of Rome, depicted from unusual angles in works such as the movie Le fate ignoranti (The Ignorant fairies, 2001) directed by ferzan Özpetek and the novel Scontro di civiltà per un ascensore in piazza Vittorio (Clash of Civilizations over an Elevator in Piazza Vittorio, 2006) by Amara Lakhous.

The “table puppet” is a type of puppet that is manipulated by the animator on a table. Nonso and Nonso are two table puppets, two cute and funny characters faced with insurmountable or simple problems and conflicts. They live in a world of antiques objects and they try to understand how the existence works. (“non so” in Italian means “I don’t know”). Audiences follow Mr. Nonso and Mrs. Nonsa in their efforts; laugh at them, because they recognize themselves in their naivety and tenacity. The show consists of short and poetic sketches, full of a delicate comicality, typical of the silent movies of 1900. The sketches are accompanied by music and punctuated by explanatory signs. The show, suitable for audiences from 3 to 100 years was presented at festivals.
Event organised by Ishara Puppet festival and Teamwork films in collaboration with Istituto Italiano di Cultura.
