Yonge-DunDas square is a unique focal point in downtown Toronto where our communities come together.Having opened in 2003 as part of the City’s successful Yonge Street Revitalization Project, Yonge-Dundas Square is an exciting urban space designated for use as a public piazza and as a venue that can accommodate events of various sizes. In the past seven years the Square has produced over 150 events and hosted more than 1000 promotions, media launches, community and cultural festivals, attended by more than 4 million people. In a brief period of time, the Square has estab-lished a solid international profile serving a broad constituency including neighbours, city

residents, local businesses, educational institu-tions, not-for-profit organizations and visitors.Every year the Square takes part in some of the city’s biggest celebrations including Luminato, Just for Laughs, the Toronto Inter-national Film Festival, NXNE, Nuit Blanche, and the Santa Claus Parade. Most events on the Square are free admission. On quiet days, the Square is a respite from the hectic pace of downtown life, offering an oasis of water fountains, café seating and several site amenities including free Wi-Fi access, TTC subway access, a sightseeing and information kiosk, and the T.O. TIX ticket booth.

Yonge-Dundas Square is a City of Toronto public facility operated by a Board of Management appointed by Toronto City Council.

June 2Paisley JuraThe Globe and Mail calls her “an old-soul chanteuse with savvy pop sensibilities.” Now Magazine says she has “an unadorned voice that rings clear and true.” The Edmonton Vue Weekly advises “bring a box of Kleenex.” Paisley Jura’s brand of elegant, genre-defying ori-ginal pop has captured the hearts of listeners across the country, topping college radio charts. Live per-formances feature Jura playing her 200-year-old Italian double bass, piano and guitar with Toronto luminaries Jamie Stager (piano, trombone and vocals), Mark Kelso (drums and vocals), and Joel Schwartz (guitar, mandolin and lapsteel).

sept 22amanda mabro A world-class performer with a vivacious presence and Montreal flair, Amanda Mabro delivers what pop music has been waiting for: a talent that fuses a dedicated artistic sensibility with an access-ible sound and a spectacular live show. A sassy songstress with a multicultural back-ground, Amanda has an im-pressive musical resume that boasts shows in North America and Europe, performances alongside international stars and high praise from music critics. Her latest project, the Wine Flows and Red Rows sister EPs, present her gor-geous larger-than-life vocal prowess and abil-ity to deliver inspir-ing and original songs.

may 5yvette tollarYvette is a JUNO Award Nominated jazz vocalist. (Best Vocal Jazz Album Of The Year 2009) who has recorded and performed on three continents. Yvette’s expressive vocals are rich and soulful, her delivery of lyrics mature and her technique flawless.

may 12maiko WatsonMaiko’s songs are everyday stories of love, heartbreak, optimism and strength. Her sound is a melting pot of earthy, vintage tones, where classic soul meets the twenty first century, layered with reggae and rock, and topped by jazzy vocal stylings. In 2001 Maiko Watson beat out four thousand young women to become a mem-ber of Sugar Jones, a girl group spawned from reality TV show “Pop-stars”. Since Sugar Jones, Maiko has become a multi-instrumentalist. Her solo debut album “Sweet Vibration” has been winning critical praise across the country. “NNNN” - NOW Magazine.

may 19elizabeth shePherdJuno nominated, Elizabeth Shepherd’s music is less about following a particular tradition than it is about expressing a creative spirit. Which is not surprising coming from someone who grew up in a highly music-al family, living all over Canada and France, played tenor horn in the Salvation Army brass band where her parents were ministers, had an early love-affair with hip-hop music, only to wind up studying French poetry, and eventually, classical and jazz piano at Mc-Gill University. Her albums, including the recent “Heavy Falls the Night”, have made her a critical fa-vourite with tunes that are always an inviting depar-ture from convention.

Built of four of the strong-est musical voices in Montreal’s thriving, cele-brated scene, Ladies of The Canyon’s sound is as polymorphic, true and passionate as its members.

LOTC are candy sweet folk pop one minute and heart-wrenching soulful com-plaint the next. Their music always follows the spirit of the moment - ethereal folkie fingerstyle

guitar licks might escape suddenly to pounding rock drums and bass, heavy grooves or lush vocal harmonies that soar over a simple piano mel-ody. The undercurrent

maintained throughout, however, is more than a little bit country. LOTC are the sexy breeders of a timeless, roots-influenced sound that is addictive and moving.

oct 6WoodPigeonWoodpigeon is more than just the most beautiful word in the English language, al-though that’s precisely why it was chosen by songwriter Mark Hamilton as the mon-iker for his pretty-pretty-pop project. Encompassing a kind of ersatz collective or-chestra, dispersed across a couple of continents, rising and falling in number with the demands of song life and real life, Woodpigeon creates music much the same way a bowerbird crafts a lovenest: the right space is chosen and the bower goes up twig by twig, berry by berry, embellishing a basic construction that’s already sound and lovely. Occasionally, when all goes well, a mate is attracted.

sept 29 maylee toddMeet quirky songstress, Maylee Todd, the multi-talented singer/songwriter with an appetite for obscure instruments. If you ask Maylee how she manages to play the Paraguayan harp as well as she does the guitar, she’ll tell you “anyone can do it.” But we’ve tried and that’s not true. You may know her from the humorous interactive aerobics events called “Sweatshop Hop” which have aired on Much More Music or from her velvety vocals on the track ‘For What it’s Worth’ in a Telus Mobility commercial. She’s also a regular at Second City. Maylee’s debut album ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ is out on June 15th.

oct 20the strumbellasSince forming in late 2008, The Strumbellas have been blowing the doors off of clubs and festival stages. Their singular mix of alt-country harmonies, bluegrass instrumentation, and big pop hooks makes them natural heirs of the Toronto indie folk scene built by Royal City, The Sadies, Hayden, and Cuff the Duke. The Strumbellas--with the thunderous force of their live show--are anything but a simple retread.

oct 13one hundred dollars Dubbed the urban deni-zens of Canada’s country scene, One Hundred Dol-lars lends a window into what country music might have become had the industry not been overtaken by pop music production and trite sub-ject matter. Critics have given One Hundred Dol-lar’s country the prefixes “alt -”, “traditional”, “psych-”, “real,” alike, serv-ing as testament to the band’s ability to draw all audiences- even those who think they hate Country - into the genre. In 2009, Forest of Tears was long listed for the Polaris Prize.

July 23aPadoorai in association withThe dynamic grooves of didgeridoo set the mood, mix-ing with strong rhythmic and guitar lines to carry crowds to an exhilarating ancestral trance, while main-taining the natural sound of the instruments. A young and talented Montreal based group, Apadooraï’s latest album ‘Kinda Roots’ displays the influences of Afro-groove, Reggae-dub, Arabic music, Celtic and Folk.

Hip-Hop Kara-oke is the prime opportunity for closet MCs to finally grab the mic and bust their favourite raps live on stage with an accompanying DJ and a feel-good, no attitude vibe where the emphasis is placed on hav-ing fun. Arrive early to select from hundreds of classic jams and flex your lyrical skill!

June 25lady son and artiCulo veinteA tight, horn-driven unit that takes classic Afro-Lat-in roots into a new century, combining different musical genres and sounds while maintaining the essence of the NuYorican style salsa and (Cuban) Son Montuno style.

July 2tambura rasaTambura Rasa is a buoyant cultural cross-pollination that fuses contemporary grooves and traditional rhythms into one energetic musical brand all their own! Packed with fiery Spanish guitar, fully orches-trated Baladi Gypsy string section, burning Afro-Latin percussion and sensual Flamenco and Belly dancers, this act raises the roof and lights-up skies of any con-cert grounds they land on.

July 16del Castillo in association with inative toronto international aboriginal music festivalDel Castillo has become a symbol of the cross-cultural power of music with their eclectic blend of Flamenco, Rock, Latin, Blues, and World music. Rolling Stone calls Del Castillo “tumbling brilliance on nylon-string classical guitars” with “eruptions of technique and taste (that) conjure images of Eddie Van Halen fronting early Santana (with an assist from the Gipsy Kings).”Their music has been featured on the soundtracks for “Spy Kids 3D”, “Once Upon a Time in Mexico”, “Sin City”, “GRINDHOUSE” and “Kill Bill Vol. II” Not to be missed.

aug 20roberto loPez ProJeCtThe Roberto López Pro-ject is a polycultural or-chestra, which gathers an arsenal of rhythms and sonic colours to create a fantastic audio world. Powerful, melodic and contemporary, the Nu Afro Latin style is defined by this adventurous mix of traditions. From Afro-Colombian and Afro-Cu-ban music all the way to urban Hip-hop, Boogaloo, Jazz and Electronica... all blended together in a powerful cocktail. The songs are politically en-gaged, socially critical, while at the same time celebrating the joy of life... this is the New Sound of Latin Music!!

aug 13les gitans de saraJevo in association withMusic of Les Gitans de Sarajevo harmoniously inte-grates outside influence into the various Balkan styles of music to create a “World” feeling. Songs filled with nostalgia explore conflicting feelings on such themes as exile, tragic outcome of separation and above all celebration of Woman. Songs relate the pain of lost, in-accessible or impossible loves. LGDS add a whole new flavour to music from the Balkan and Eastern Euro-pean music. Not only do they continue to play the se-ductive airs natural to gypsy music, but interpret it with a unique spirit that pushes the traditional into a modern context.

sept 3masia oneThe first female to be nomin-ated for a Much Music Video Award (Rap), Masia One con-stantly redefines the sound and cultural boundaries of Hip hop music. Born in Singa-pore, Masia moved to Canada where she developed as a graffiti artist, b-girl and MC. Her album PU-LAU reflected influences including the culture of SE Asia, heated dance hall tempos of Ja-maica and the feel good vibe of California. Her much anticipated new album features Masia’s remarkable flow over highly infec-tious dancehall, electro and dance rhythms. This Singapore-Canadian girl is about to become a household name for urban music internationally.

aug 27soulJazz orChestraSince their creation in Ottawa, Canada, back in 2002, the Souljazz Orchestra have become one of the most potent bands in their field. Drawing on the rough, raw grooves of the ‘60s and ‘70s and effortlessly fusing soul, jazz, afro and latin rhythms within their music, the group have moved forward the blueprint of Fela, Fania and the funk in entirely new ways, while keeping the vital analogue grit intact. As a live unit, years of relentless touring have formed the band into an in-demand fixture at venues and festivals worldwide.
