JaMes lapiNe (Book) was born in 1949 in Mansfield, Ohio. After receiving a MFA in Design from the California Institute of the Arts, he moved to New York City. Lapine eventually left the visual arts for a career in theatre where he has also written and directed the plays Table Settings, Luck, Pluck And Virtue, The Moment When, Fran’s Bed and Mrs. Miller Does Her Thing. He has written the book for and directed Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, Passion and the recent multi-media revue Sondheim On Sondheim. And with William Finn he has collaborated

On Broadway he has also directed Golden Child, The Diary Of Anne Frank, Amour, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. He has directed several other productions off-Broadway as well as three films. Lapine is a member of the Dramatist Guild Council and for the last nine years has been a mentor for TDF’s Open Doors Program. He is also on the board of Ars Nova Theater. He currently lives in New York City.

stepheN soNdheiM (Music and Lyrics) One of the most influential and accomplished composer/lyricists in Broadway history, Sondheim was born in New York City. As a teenager he met Oscar Hammerstein II, who became his mentor. Sondheim graduated from Williams College, where he received the Hutchinson Prize for Music Composition. He worked for a short time as a writer for the television show Topper; his first professional musical theatre job was as the songwriter for the unproduced musical

Saturday Night. He wrote the lyrics for West Side Story, Gypsy and Do I Hear A Waltz?, as well as additional lyrics for Candide. Musicals for which he has written both music and lyrics include A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone Can Whistle, Company (1971 Tony Award Music and Best Lyrics), Follies (1972 Tony Award Score & New York Drama Critics Circle Award; revised in London, 1987), A Little Night Music (1973 Tony Award Score), The Frogs, Pacific Overtures (1976 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award), Sweeney Todd (1979 Tony Award Score), Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George (1984 - New York Drama Critics Circle Award; 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama), Into the Woods (1987 Tony Award Score), Assassins and Passion (1994 Tony Award Score). He composed the songs for the television production Evening Primrose, co-authored the film The Last of Sheila and provided incidental music for The Girls of Summer, Invitation to a March and Twigs. Side by Side by Sondheim, Marry Me a Little, You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow, Putting It Together, Moving One and Sondhiem on Sondheim are anthologies of his work. He has written scores for the films Stavisky and Reds, and composed songs for the film Dick Tracy (Academy Award for Best Song). He is on the Council of the Dramatist Guild and in 1983 was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters which awarded him the Gold Medal for Music in 2006. In 1990 he was appointed the first Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre at Oxford University. He received a Kennedy Center Honor in 1993.

froM the CoNduCtor I affectionately refer to Sunday in the Park with George as the “mantra show” for the message it holds for artists. But really, it’s a message for anyone who ever wanted to be heard and understood. It is an unforgettable show and one I’m thrilled to be discovering again.

My father, Paul Gemignani, was the original musical director for Sunday in the Park with George on Broadway. I remember, as a four year old, occasionally being brought in to rehearsals and becoming mesmerized by the music, the lyrics, and the imagery. And what’s not to love? The precise yet romantic music, the sharp yet passionate lyrics and the characters themselves...full of color and light each an every one of them. It is truly a masterpiece, much like the painting itself.

Later, when I played the Boatman and Dennis in the Broadway revival, I was reminded of that childhood wonderment every time I heard the opening chords strike. And at every curtain call, Dot’s words echoed in my ears as they do everyday of my artistic life: “Anything you do, let it come from you. Then it will be new. Give us more to see.”

Words to live by.

A mantra. — Alexander Gemignani, Music Director/Conductor
