This Design Studio understands architecture as ‘circulating objects’, objects each with a multitude of relationships to others that establish moments of ‘durability’, as well as phases of fluid change. Architecture's circulating objects tangle themselves through their travels. Yes, architecture is always on the move, and indeed space is not a vessel to be filled, but is comprised of always shifting relations. These architectures produce as well as transmit meaning: they constitute 'cultures of circulation'. We will be looking at space as ‘thick’, full of a multiplicity of frames and perspectives; in a phrase, we will be interested in architecture as spatial practice.

Programs are always in flux, they shift as objects and scripts of spatial and cultural performance are rendered mutable through questioning, critique, mindful transformation and by situations and circumstances. Let’s call this contingent urbanism.

This studio will not be satisfied with unquestioning acceptance of ‘the way practise is’ and certainly will not seek to mimic practice. You should be evolving what practice can be through your work.

This studio investigates and experiments with the relationship between the materials of architecture: the propositional and the performative.Through intense workshops and seminars, you will evolve your tools to explore and develop your own creative spatial practices. You will make sites for investigations of your architectures, you will critique and develop programs. You will develop your own dialogue between proposals for spaces and actual transformation and creation of space.
