We don't currently issue certificates to Fellows. The practise was apparently discontinued quite some time ago.
Our new treasurer has just taken over and he will be in touch with you about your subscription in due course. Please don't be concerned if this takes a week or two, or even more as he is updating the membership database which will take some time. I will let him know that you have inquired.
Thank you so much for your kindness in offering to send a copy of your research paper but the RSSA does not have the facility for receiving Fellows' papers.

In the Wolfson Suite, Ground FloorEdinburgh University LibraryGeorge Square, EdinburghOn Monday 24th May 2004, at 7 pmAlthough biting midges have a worldwide distribution, there is nowhere quite like Scotland in terms of the havoc that these tiny insects can cause. Midges have been around for millions of years and still there is no effective means of control. In Scotland during the 1940's, a Government-funded 'Midge Control Unit' was set up at the University of Edinburgh, headed by Professor Doug Kettle. The team involved produced a wealth of data on the ecology and biology of midges in Scotland, although failed to provide any solutions to their control. Recently, we have been taking a fresh look at how midges interact with their environment, in an attempt to identify chinks in the midge's armour where novel interventions could be aimed in an attempt to reduce the nuisance caused to both man and animals. This has included the identification of naturally-occurring repellents, in addition to the cocktail of smells usually used by a midge to find a bloodmeal; incorporated into a novel trapping system (the 'Midgeater'), capable of collecting >1 million midges in a single day. This talk will outline the research we have been involved with and attempt to outline a 'survival guide' for coping with these insects in Scotland

Monitoring Earthquakes in the UKDr Roger MussonBritish Geological Survey, Edinburgh

People in the UK tend not to think of this country as subject toearthquakes. Such earthquakes as do occur (discounting minor ones that arehardly felt and cause no damage) are infrequent and quickly forgotten. Noone has been killed by a British earthquake since 1940. Yet this is partlya matter of luck. The largest British earthquakes in the last hundredyears or so have mostly been in rural locations, and typically 15-20 kmdeep. As a result, though windows may be rattled over a wide area, thereis usually very little damage. This luck may not continue; even a moderateearthquake could do significant damage if it occurred at shallow depthunder a major city; London, Birmingham, Manchester, Swansea and Glasgoware among the potential locations where such a thing could happen. As aresult, it is important to keep a close eye on earthquakes, even in acountry like Britain. This talk will give an insight into the seismicmonitoring operations of the British Geological Survey, the patterns ofearthquake activity revealed, and how historical research turns out to beimportant when it comes to advising engineers about the risk from futureearthquakes in the UK.
