average of 1.1`.18 ha. The bigger areas, however, are not owned by the

    farmer.

Four out of 27 or 14.81% - not owned by the farmer.

Mr. Larry Sarmiento, barangay captain ofPalta Saday camote farmers lost 80 hectares

    of camote plantation

    The highest yield - 20 sacks to a hectare per planting cycle . -180/sack or10,800 or Php900. a month.

Most farmers -1 cycle per year ; Some farmers - two cycles a year.

In summer, roots do not grow big.. Instead, there is heavy foliage.

    Reason: long-day photoperiods.

    camote requires full sunlight

short-day length (less than 10-12 hrs

low intensity (25-30C (Arnold Caf (2012))

. Soil should be high in organic matter

    acidic (pH 6.1-7.7)

sandy loam withmuch nitrogen for the leaves and

    potassium for the tuberous roots

    (AVRDC,2012)

Baras, Bato, Caramoran, Pandan, San Miguel, Viga andVirac are high in organic matter (Ilagan, 2012).

Only Pandan and Virac have soil pH of 6-6.5 while theothers are lower.

All parts of the island is sufficient to potassium.

The most appropriate areas for camote production appear tobe Pandan and Virac .

    Production at low average is 17.41 cans per farmer percycle;

at high average is 23.64 cans.

Income is at a low average of Php4,636.25 per cycle andat a high average of Php6,600.31.

Middlemen (para cimber) buy the farmers produce onsite at prices between 100-150.

Sold to market vendors at 180./ can. In the market sold at 200./ can or 30./kg or 20./tumpok

of 5-6 small to medium size pieces. Most supply of camote in the Virac Supermarket come

from Pajo San Isidro, Hawan Ilaya, Calatagan, Virac, and from Datag and Rizal in San Andres.

Some farmers of San Andres sell their produce in Viracfor a higher pay.

Delivery of one sack is sold out in less than a day. At

most, in two days time. There are times when there is no supply of camote in

the market. Some vendors order from Albay at a price alittle lower than our own prevailing price.

We failed to find a store selling camote in

    - San Andres market

    - Bato market area

    - San Miguel market area,

    - Viga

    - Payo

We found two stores selling camote in Caramoran andthree stores in Pandan

Only one camote buyer processes the crop into camotecue to be sold at Oco Elementary School in Oco, Viga.

We were told that there are no records about camote inthe municipal agricultural offices nor in the provincialoffice.

    CONCLUSION

    1. Camote production is low. Camote as anindustry exists only in Virac.- Major suppliers are Pajo San Isidro, Virac, andDatag, San Andres. There are only several storesselling camote in Virac but very few in Pandan

and Caramoran and none in San Andres, Viga,Payo, San Miguel and Bato.

    - The supply chain involves the farmer, themiddlemen, the buyers, the processors and the

consumers.- Camote is sold as tops, vines and tuberous roots.- Few people regard camote growing as a

    profitable venture.

  • 7/28/2019 Production and Marketing Channels of Ppt

    20/21

    2. Camote production needs a boost to-

    a. make people understand its uses

    b. make people see its profitability

    c. help people rediscover it as a staple foodd. erase the stigma of camote being the poor

    mans diet
