Product ImprovementP/N 3031863-001 (PV3-240-10D) Engine-Driven Pump

2 EATON Aerospace TF500-3C June 2013

Extensive analysis and verification testing has resulted in the development of a substantial product improvement to Eaton’s Vickers® P/N 887673 hydraulic pump (PV3-240-10C). This modification will significantly reduce external leakage associated with the face seal at the parting line interface between the adapter block and housing. The product improvement to the P/N 887673 (PV3-240-10C), introduced as P/N 3031863-001 (PV3-240-10D), provides significant enhancements for the design. The upgrade is available as a service modification to the P/N 887673 pump (PV3-240-10C).

The upgrade replaces the large face seal at the housing to adaptor block interface with a robust and field proven radial seal design. An optimized pressure timing and control piston design also significantly reduces the internal control pressure pulsations. The robust sealing approach coupled with the reduced pulsations insures a significant reduction with parting line leakage. Additionally, the non-functional control seal plug and seal have been eliminated from the new design. This completely removes another potential source of external leakage. The lower pressure pulsation levels also reduce internal wear on components within the pump control circuit. These design enhancements greatly improve pump reliability.

The P/N 3031863-001 (PV3-240-10D) configuration provides several improvements over the P/N 887673 (PV3-240-10C). The new design . . .

Design Verification Testing

Testing has been conducted to verify the integrity of the radial seal design of the P/N 3031863-001 (PV3-240-10D) configuration. A 200 million pressure cycle seal endurance test has been completed on the radial seal design. After completing the cycle test, the radial seals of the P/N 3031863-001 (PV3-240-10D) configuration showed no signs of erosion or distress. The radial seal design has proven to be far superior to the face seal design when operating within a high control pressure pulsation environment.

In summary, this product provides a reduction in control circuit pressure pulsations along with a radial seal design that significantly reduces the parting line leakage issue of the PV3-240-10C design, improvingreliabilityandMTBF.

The P/N 3031863 -001 (PV3-240-10D) incorporates the product improvements to address parting line leakage. The new part number, 3031863-001 (PV3-240-10D), was established to facilitate opeator tracking requirements. The P/N 3031863-001 (PV3-240-10D) incorporates a carbon shaft seal, new bleed plug, carbon-filled Teflon back-up rings (blocking valve) and new yoke screws. These product improvements can also be incorporated into the P/N 887673 (PV3-240-10C) through theembodimentofServiceBulletins:623977-29-08,623977-29-09, 623977-29-12 and 887673-29-04 respectively.

Design Features

Seals The cross-section in Figure 1 illustrates the seal design of P/N 3031863-001 (PV3-240-10D). The product improvements eliminate the face seal and introduces radial seals to prevent leakage from the pump control to the external environment. The improvement also eliminates the plug and plug seal, which has also had reported leakage issues, refer to the cross-section on page 3.

The improvements to the control pressure pulsation levels and the seal design includethefollowing:

Wafer Plate The timing was optimized to reduce the yoke moment oscillations(SeeFigure2onpage 5). This leads to reduced control pressure pulsations levels in the optimized design.

Actuator Piston The new actuator piston provides optimum EDV pressure levels and damping to the control circuit.

Actuator Sleeve The new actuator sleeve incorporates radial seals along with double backup rings at the adaptor/sleeve interface and at the housing/sleeve interface to seal pump control pressure from the external environment. The radial seal design is much more robust particularly in the high control pressure pulsation environment. The new actuator sleeve optimizes the actuator piston.

Housing The new housing design provides a more optimized control volume and pressure-damping chamber. The new housing also incorporates the radial seal design of the actuator sleeve and eliminates the plug and plug seal.

Improved Control Pressure Pulsations

A primary factor that contributes to seal distress is the high-pressure pulsation environment's of a pump control circuit. The new Eaton design enhancements results in up to 60 percent reductions in pump control pressure pulsationlevels(SeeFigure3on page 5).

The new design features of the 3031863-001 have been tested with very favorable results. The control pressure pulsations were reduced significantly over the speed range of the pump; see Figure 3 below.

As mentioned in the design feature section, the timing change to the wafer plate reduces the yoke moment oscillation. The predicted reduction in yoke moment variation was 29%-50%, see Figure 2 below.
