A localised, collaborative supply chain – Toyota’s vision of the future?
When someone talks about ‘locally sourced’ one immediately conjours up images of trendy London boutiques or small organic restaurants. What you don’t think of is one of the most ubiquitous names in the automotive industry. But believe it or not, Toyota take that ethos and expand it to truly super-sized proportions, despite having some of the most complex procurement challenges in the world.
Mark Adams, Vice President of Purchasing at Toyota Motor Europe talks us through the system they employ and the challenges that they face that results in 90% of their cars value being locally procured in Europe for Europe.
How is procurement structured at Toyota?Global Purchasing Division based in Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan, where Purchasing Chief Officer is located. Three regional organisations – based in USA, Europe, and South East Asia, each responsible for procurement for the operations in their respective regions […]
What are the company’s core categories? If by categories, you mean the product groups that we buy, then the answer cannot be concise. We are responsible for strategy and procurement of all components of our cars made in Europe. More than 90% of our cars’ value is locally procured in Europe by ourselves. Everything from complex electronic control modules developed with multi-national suppliers, down to simple presswork and plastic parts supplied by local family companies.
What key challenges are you currently facing? The automotive industry was just recovering from the global financial crisis when the earthquake and tsunami of March 11th hit Eastern Japan. In addition to the immense human consequences, we have seen starvation of some components and materials that were supplied by companies directly affected by the earthquake, tsunami, the nuclear accident, and interruption to electricity supplies. Production volumes of cars have again been adversely affected […]
What do you see as the top 3 challenges facing the procurement function in the next 12 months? After the recovery from the earthquake, I believe that we will be in a fight for capacity at our suppliers. We are sure to try to catch back lost volume, and that will place a deal of pressure on businesses that may be depleted of resources. We must maintain a focus on quality when the volume uplift arrives and green labour walks through the door […]
How mature is procurement in the automotive sector? How can it be improved? The procurement function is well matured, however, that may be seen as a weakness rather than advantage. The process is to some extent locked into a system that requires part by part engineering release followed by part by part supplier selection and negotiation. We need to get suppliers working with us at the very early stages of projects, even before a project is conceived. I can visualise a better system where […]
What are the major lessons for procurement in the automotive sector that have emerged from the recession? We have several lessons. For example, we learned how to function and achieve more with less. Headcount and fixed costs have been slashed while performance remained at target. In Toyota, many people learned to take tough decisions for the first time […]
How do you see the procurement function evolving in the next few years?I see major change coming in the way that we prepare for new projects. Suppliers need to become more self reliant so that we can dedicate a higher percentage of our procurement resource towards value added activity, instead of checking that suppliers have done what they should […]
