Message from the Organiser

Our 8th eMagazine to celebrate another successful Gold Coast Open. A total of 434

competitors participate at the 10th Mooto Gold Coast Open. For the first time we had

Para Sparring athletes. International, national and state champions from all over the

Australia were back. 2019 saw 2 teams from Nepal, and 3 teams from New Zealand.

We hope you enjoy this publication. The 11th Gold Coast Open has already been set

for the 2 & 3rd May 2020.

HISTORY

Tan’s Open 1 - 17 The Gold Coast Open has grown to be one of

the largest Taekwondo competitions in Australia.

Organised by Tan’s the event has grown from a

club championship to what it is today.

The 1st Tans invitational championship was held

in 1992 at the Southport High School. Sparring,

Poomse and Jump kick competition were held

similar to the format we have today.

At the 7th Tans Open, New Zealand under the

Taekwondo Union of New Zealand (TUNZ)

entered for the first time. Various clubs and

associations from NZ have returned every year

since.

In 2008, the event was expanded to 2 days as

we could no longer fit the program into one.

The Gold Coast Open

In 2010, a name change was made to represent

the expansion of the competition. The Gold

Coast Open, also promoted the region where it

has made its home and reputation. Every year

we have clubs from all over Australia and

internationally. 2014 saw the expansion of

electronics to all divisions except Yellow belt

under 12 years. In 2017 we were the first event

to use the new 120M Carrara Stadium.

The Gold Coast Open is proud of its reputation

which sees clubs returning each year. Taking

care of the small details makes a big difference.

The Gold Coast Open is always held in mid

May to take advantage of the great weather.

Club Profile WeiWu Taekwondo(Victoria)

Located at Melbourne Eastern suburb, Mitcham and Northern

suburb, Lalor and Mill Park, WeiWu Taekwondo is a family-run

club by instructors Bryanna, Benecia, Brian and Joyce.

With more than a decade of experience and knowledge each,

coupled with their passion for Taekwondo, they aim to empower

students with valuable life skills in a family friendly, safe and

positive environment.

From the sports aspect of Taekwondo, Bryanna and Benecia

bring with them a wealth of experience to the competition team, having competed for the past 12

years before retiring from competitions to focus on developing new and young athletes. Both have

competed and medaled at multiple states and national championships, as well as represented

Australia at various international championships including the world junior championships.


Club Profile IMPACT MA (ACT)

IMPACT practices many styles of MA including Taekwondo, Kenpo

Karate, Kyusho Jitsu and Hapkido.

Master instructor, Danny Crkvencic, has been studying MA for over 30

years and has achieved his 7th Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo, a 7th

Dan Black Belt in Kyusho, a Black Belt in Hapkido and a 4th Dan Black

belt in Kenpo Karate.

Master Crkvencic believes in ongoing learning and is committed to continually gaining knowledge

and expertise from the world’s best masters in MA. In addition, he has been National Coach and

represented at many overseas benchmark events and is a member of several National Boards.


Club Profile

Cooktown Taekwondo Academy – Far North Queensland. CTA was founded in 2015 and is sister-club to Flinn Taekwondo Academy in Brisbane. The club is owned and operated by Dan Hodgson in the small, very remote township of Cooktown on the Cape York Penninsula and runs training from the Gungarde Indigenous Corporation hall on Tuesday and Thursday nights. With only a small group of student, around 20, we are very lucky to have the support of Ben and Joshua Flinn at FTA who make the 2000km journey for gradings and workshops and we also have a great community who have helped us to fundraise this year to bring 7 students and 2 parents down to the Gold Coast Open for 2019. This year is a great opportunity for our players who have never even been to a competition to have a go in championship divisions and look toward WT in the future. With Cairns being the closest urban center, 350km south of us, coming to the Gold Coast to compete and get amongst the Taekwondo community is a huge deal for all of us.”

Formerly known as The Taekwondo Academy, the new brand incorporates all their classes

beyond Taekwondo. Master Allan & Kelly Malachowski operate a state of the art full time

centre in the Western suburbs of Melbourne. Allan started his Taekwondo journey at age 5

with Neil Anderson of Oh’s Taekwondo. I remember Neil was one of the hardest instructors

back in the 70’s. Earlier this month, Amber Carter won selection at the Junior World Cadet

selections in Brisbane.

Ali Khalil

2012 & 2016 AUS Coach

Ali, the older brother of dual Olympian Safwan was a

competitor in his own right. Ali competed at the 2007

World Championships and won Gold at the 1st Oceania

Championships in 2005.

However Ali decide to stop competing to open a full time

centre and help Safwan focus on the 2012 Olympics. Ali

started with Marwan Hussein who was running Liverpool

Pro Taekwondo.

Andy Rutten

Andy is no stranger to the Gold Coast. Andy migrated

from Germany more than 30 years ago. For over a

decade, each and every year Andy and his team has

supported the Gold Coast Open. Andy always fields a

strong team of competitors and we are sure this year will

be no exception.

1992 player (Demonstration Sport) 2000 Player,

2004 Sparing Partner.

Paul first made the Australian Team in 1986 at the 7th

Asian Championships in Darwin. Paul started with the

late Mr Kyu Suh Chang before joining Halls Taekwondo

in the early 90’s. Since his retirement, Paul has opens a

full time centre in Essendon offering Taekwondo,

Acrobatics, Boxing and Ninja Warrior training.
