The annual validation sticker you receive along with your official receipt for payment of your professional fee should be placed at the bottom right hand corner on the glass of your framed certificate of registration.

President’s Award

This Award is presented to TPS registrants who have distinguished excellence in professional life – whether technical practice or such areas as management, teaching or administration. The Association is pleased to present the “2020 Technology Professional of the Year Award” to Barry W. Sudom, A.Sc.T. for his tireless efforts towards promoting the applied science / engineering technology profession both provincially and nationally.

Each year the President’s Award is chosen and presented by the TPS President to an individual who promotes and furthers the professional identity of the Association to the public. This individual, through professional conduct and actions, takes it upon themselves to educate, promote and defend the Association and its membership. The “2020 President’s Award” was presented to Savas (John) Omay, A.Sc.T. for his tireless efforts towards promoting the applied science and engineering technology profession both provincially and nationally. A plaque displaying each recipient for this Award is on display in the TPS office.

“Internet of Things - IoT” by Heath Armbruster, A.Sc.T.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic over the past year has moved to using major projects in their programs under the School of Information and Communications Technology. Three programs in specific are to be highlighted here.

The Telecommunications Networking Technician program is an intensive 45-week certificate program offered full-time at Saskatchewan Polytechnic Regina Campus. It provides practical and analytical training in electronic and IP-based communications, basic computer networking, and Internet of Things solutions. The program emphasizes practical, hands-on training with the same equipment students are likely to use in their careers.

The Internet of Things classes have become the flagship of the program and is the third fastest moving technology currently. In the broadest sense, the term IoT encompasses everything connected to the internet, but it is increasingly being used to define objects that “talk” to each other. “Simply, the Internet of Things is made up of devices – from simple sensors to smartphones and wearables – connected together,” Matthew Evans, the IoT Program Head at techUK, has said. The TNT program has been involved in Data Collection and Security. Students create projects as vast as their imaginations using Rasberry Pi and Arduino technology. Further, they have broadened the scope by including industry through the use of a platform called Riipen. The company provides a digital platform for employers to post challenges, or projects, for students to work on. In turn, it gives students the opportunity to showcase the portfolio of real-world projects they have completed while in school. Marrying these two, allows Saskpolytech students to interact with industry and develop real world projects industry is looking for, all the while creating potential pathways to graduate employment.

Computer networking technicians are called “network mechanics” because of their ability to solve problems in all kinds of network environments. Since just about every business depends on computer networks, computer networking technicians can find job opportunities in every sector. Their jobs might involve IT infrastructure support and service, information systems, network or systems administration.

The Computer Networking program has long offered a project where students have the opportunity to design, build, implement, maintain and troubleshoot a medium scale enterprise network, simulating the real world as closely as possible. Partnering with Riipen globally, students now have the chance to work with employers all over the world to assist in the creation of networks needed by industry themselves. Networking fundamentals is the second fastest growing technology and involves CyberSecurity, the number one trending. The reports these students have created can be used to augment their resumes, and has been proven to secure employment more than just having a resume alone.

The final program to be mentioned has been running in Saskatchewan for the past generation through the Saskatoon Campus, but now mirrored in Regina, the Computer Systems Technology program. Computer systems technologists solve computer-related issues for businesses, government agencies, utilities, law enforcement agencies, health services providers, educational institutions and more. It’s a career that demands a unique blend of skills—computer literacy, technical know-how and communications savvy—but also lets students specialize in areas that interest them the most, including programming, software design, mobile application programming, data communications and web design.

In their second year, they partner with industry for a Capstone Project. Students work as part of a development team on an IT problem for an external industry client. Their projects include the production and demonstration of functioning components of the system each release within deadlines set out in their project management documentation. Again, this year they are planning to partner with Riipen to allow them a broader base of industry professionals and employers to work with. Immersing students in industry projects equips them with work-ready skills. Riipen brings industry and academia together, with real company projects that are facilitated by instructors and embedded directly into curriculum. These three programs are utilizing not just the remote platform and hybrid model of learning that the world of education is now facing, changing the landscape of post-secondary forever, but working with industry and potential employers to help facilitate graduates reach their career goals and beyond.

Too much work and big projects on the horizon?

Saskatchewan Polytechnic co-operative education (co-op) can help. Now is the time to secure your co-op student. Students are available at the beginning of January, as well as May.

As many already know, Sask Polytech students are eager, enthusiastic and have job-ready skills that help make them active contributors on day 1. Plus, your management and human resources team can benefit from making Sask Polytech co-op students a part of your organization in the following ways.

For your temporary labour needs

The first benefit that employers realize from co-op is that it offers a low-risk method of filling temporary labour needs. Co-op students can be hired for four or eight months, depending on the program, with no permanent commitment. Sask Polytech students are being trained in the latest methods and technologies and come to their employers’ eager to learn and contribute. This is a great way for employers to handle busy periods or tackle projects that have been on the shelf for too long.

Long-term succession planning

Secondly, many of our employers use co-op to help with long-term succession planning. Co-op can be used as an extended job interview as work terms give employers and students a chance to get to know each other, to determine if a long term fit exists. In some of our programs, placements run throughout the year, with students participating in two or three separate work terms. Some employers who hire students from these programs have an ongoing co-op student position with students cycling through their placements and ultimately graduating as permanent employees.

Give back to your industry

Finally, participating in co-op is a great way to give back to your industry and profession. With an aging workforce, it is imperative the next generation of students become

properly trained to take on the challenges that await. Studies show that co-op programs greatly enhance learning outcomes and, therefore, the quality of new graduates. By participating as a host employer, you are helping to ensure a steady stream of qualified individuals enter into your field.

2. Simply click the ‘Pay Now’ button to conveniently pay your fee online or obtain your 2021 TPS professional fee invoice by clicking on the 01/01/2021 date link under the ‘Account Balance Outstanding Invoice’ area.

Online payments will receive an email of the transaction receipt, followed by an official receipt sent by mail.

You can update any necessary changes to your contact information, and email address once you are logged in to your registrant profile, and remember to click ‘save’ when completed. Once TPS has received your requested changes, your registrant profile account will be updated.

Are you thinking of retiring soon, but find yourself overwhelmed by all the decisions you are faced with? Technology Professionals Saskatchewan (TPS) has partnered with the Alberta Retired Teachers’ Association (ARTA) to help you prepare for this exciting new chapter in your life. ARTA is a not-for-profit organization, whose goal is to support an engaged lifestyle after retirement through member-centered services, advocacy, communication, wellness, and leadership.

There are so many things to consider before you retire. Are your finances in order? Are you mentally prepared to start this journey? Does your insurance plan cover the amount of travel you have planned? What is the best health benefits plan for you? With all those questions buzzing around your head, retirement can seem like a daunting prospect. But if you take time to prepare and make the right decisions for you and your family, retirement becomes a stress-free adventure where you can finally start doing all the things you never had time for.

If you are 55 years of age or older, an active TPS retired registrant, and have been in good standing for ten years, you are eligible to join ARTA as an Affiliate Member. Affiliate membership allows you to participate in ARTA’s Retiree Benefits Plan, providing you with a number of different options to suit your family’s health and travel coverage needs.

The ARTA Extended Health Care Plan has four options to choose from. Two of the health plans include Emergency Travel insurance for trips lasting up to 92 days, with no pre-existing conditions clause and no stability clause. Each of the health plans provide comprehensive coverage which include prescription drugs, medical supplies, paramedical services, vision care, hearing aids, private duty nursing, private or semi private hospital rooms, and home care. ARTA also offers three Dental Care options featuring preventative, minor, and major restorative services coverage.

If you apply for the ARTA Retiree Benefits Plan coverage within 60 days of losing your employer-sponsored group health benefits, you can join the plan without needing to provide medical evidence of insurability. And the plan does not have a termination age - you may continue coverage for as long as you want to participate. Detailed plan information is available online at https://www.arta.net/member-services.

When choosing a Retiree Benefits Plan you need to look at what is right for you and your dependants. Each ARTA Extended Health Care and Dental Care Plan offers three levels of dependant coverage. You can choose single, couple, or family coverage. A spouse is an eligible dependant and can continue coverage if something were to happen to you as primary ARTA member. Dependant children may be covered up to age 21, or up to age 25 if attending a recognized post-secondary institution. A child who is physically or mentally infirm who is dependant on you may be covered without any age limitations.

There are several additional benefits of being an ARTA member that will help you transition to retirement. ARTA provides regular communications through our popular news&views magazine, which is distributed quarterly to all members. The news&views magazine supports ARTA’s strategic goals, engages members and promotes a healthy, active, and enhanced quality of life through relevant and informative articles. In those months during which news&views is not published, members receive ARTAFacts, an email newsletter that provides information on issues affecting seniors in Alberta and nationally. ARTA also offers a scholarship program for students who are related to ARTA members. These scholarships recognize academic achievement, community involvement, volunteer work, future goals, and personal accomplishments.

As an ARTA member you may participate in the Boom discount program. The Boom discount program allows you to save money by utilizing the many discounts on services like entertainment and recreation, travel and tour groups, hotels, car rentals, and many more. The Architectural Technologies program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Program graduates have worked in all aspects of Saskatchewan’s design and construction industry, and on so many prominent buildings, that the program might be considered part of Saskatchewan’s architectural heritage. The program was initiated by architect Sid Diamond and was based on the curriculum at the University of Manitoba. It began to take on its own character when construction technology courses were added by Dennis Noreen in the late 1960s. Current student awards continue to honour these founders. It began on the Moose Jaw Campus, then known as the Saskatchewan Technical Institute, and was located in the Moose Jaw Normal School. Normal School is the old name for a teachers college and there were four in Saskatchewan, each of which had a distinctive building now worthy of heritage designation. A small but interesting heritage feature of the Moose Jaw Campus are the brass door knobs, each of which has a bas-relief of the provincial coat of arms. The building has several other high quality design features including a tile roof, a central tower and polychromatic patterned brick. They don’t make buildings like they used to which is why heritage buildings are to be treasured. The program began as a 2-year drafting course but has evolved to become a 3-year program with specializations in Building Science and Interior Design. It is also a co-op program which means that students benefit from 12 months of practical employment prior to graduation. Since the 1980s the program has also had a major heritage component. Students measure old buildings and propose design alternatives based on the federal Standards and

Guidelines. They learn the value of a main street heritage district for branding and marketing commercial buildings.The wealth of heritage buildings in downtown Moose Jaw is an ideal place to learn this and students sometimes incorporate actual client proposals in their work. Other times they have been invited by Main Street associations to study and document buildings in Saskatchewan’s smaller centres. Some places, including Indian Head, and Swift Current have supported the students by providing bus transportation and lunch. Students have also visited the Claybank Historic site, courtesy of the Canada Masonry Design Centre. The program serves as the first two years of Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s new Bachelor of Construction Management degree, permitting students to earn a four-year degree with an architectural heritage component, without leaving the province. Who knows what the next 60 years will bring?
