Bring on Term 4! The building project is providing a level of entertainment to students who enjoy watching big machinery at work. Due to the favourable weather condions and exemplary management, progress is on track and disrup- on to school organisaon is minimal. Early next term I will meet again with the contractors, project managers and Department of Educaon representaves to make some decisions about colour schemes, fings and furniture! As promised, I will connue to keep you informed of pro- gress so you can share the excitement with me. Families with students in Year 3 and 5 should have received their NAPLAN results this week. There has been quite a lot of discussion around the results in regards to students who completed the tests online and those who didn’t. We were one of the first schools in the state to do the online tests and found the students to be quite engaged in the pro- cess. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Term 3 Week 10 27th September 2018

Term 3, done and dusted! It seemed to fly by but when I look back on my

calendar, I’m reminded of how busy the weeks have been and how much

we managed to cram into 10 weeks. It’s difficult to pick a ‘highlight’ but I

should make special mention of the Education Week celebrations, the

infant’s Art Show and the Year 6 visit to Canberra. Congratulations to all

of our athletes and sports stars who represented Old Bar School so well;

to our public speakers, spelling champs and maths minds; to our SRC

fundraisers and to all our students who follow our core values of Safety,

Respect and Engagement. Bring on Term 4!

The building project is providing a level of entertainment to students who

enjoy watching big machinery at work. Due to the favourable weather

conditions and exemplary management, progress is on track and disrup-

tion to school organisation is minimal. Early next term I will meet again

with the contractors, project managers and Department of Education

representatives to make some decisions about colour schemes, fittings

and furniture! As promised, I will continue to keep you informed of pro-

gress so you can share the excitement with me.

Families with students in Year 3 and 5 should have received their

NAPLAN results this week. There has been quite a lot of discussion

around the results in regards to students who completed the tests online

and those who didn’t. We were one of the first schools in the state to do

the online tests and found the students to be quite engaged in the pro-

cess. Our overall school results indicate significant growth in numeracy

with more students achieving in the top 2 bands than ever.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT CONTINUED

All teaching staff have been trained this year in using a variety of strategies

to promote confidence and capability in their students in this area so we

were rightly proud of this achievement. If you require further information

about your child’s NAPLAN results, please make contact with the class

teacher and arrange an appointment for early in Term 4.

Speaking of Term 4, there is so much to look forward to! We will get a calen-

dar of events to you with important dates early in the term. Transition for

our pre-schoolers and Year 6 going to high school are high priorities. We also

have a Stage 2 camp, intensive swimming and leader elections. That’s just

the beginning…Watch this space for more exciting happenings for families

heading into the end of year party season.

I’m looking forward to another successful Old Bar Festival to kick off my holi-

day (despite the fact that I can’t get out of my driveway for 2 days!). I hope

you too enjoy spending some time with your children and find space to relax

and renew.

Happy holidays!

YEAR 5&6 PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITIONS

Over the past two weeks, Year 5 & 6 students have been involved in a public speaking competi-

tion. The competition involved a selection of students representing each Year 5/6 class giving a

prepared speech on a topic of choice. A panel of adjudicators then selected 3-4 students to

compete in a final round, requiring each student to deliver an impromptu speech with only 5

minutes to prepare.

Year 6 Competitors: Jayden Kosseck, Christian Paterson,

Allee Silvester, Charlee Blanch, Amarli Harrison, Ffion

Davey, Jemma Holley and Taya Hawke.

YEAR 6 RESULTS:

After all competitors had completed their

prepared speech, three finalists - Christian

Paterson, Jemma Holley and Allee Silvester,

were selected to compete in the final round,

delivering an impromptu speech on the topic

“holidays”.

Congratulations to all of these students, and

in particular to the overall winner of the Year

6 competition, Jemma Holley!

YEAR 5 RESULTS:

Congratulations to all twelve competitors

in the Year 5 competition.

Four finalists - Olivia Mather, Hope Taafe,

Chelsea Davies and Megan Eddelbuttel

were selected to move to the next round,

giving an impromptu speech on the topic

"summer".

Two students, Hope Taafe and Chelsea

Davies tied in first place with equal scores

compiled from both their prepared and

impromptu speeches.

Congratulations to all of the students

who participated in this competition.

Speaking in front of a room full of people

without the help of a microphone is

HARD!

Year 5 Competitors: Lincoln Coghlan, Ava Brudar, Rhylan

Kelly, Mitchell Roach, Georgia McLennan, Megan Eddel-

buttel, Hope Taafe, Chelsea Davies, Olivia Mather, Layla

Philipson and Eadie Byrne.

PARENT NOTICEBOARD YEAR 2 INTENSIVE SWIMMING

The Year 2 intensive swimming program will run

from Monday 26th November to Friday 7th Decem-

ber. All Year 2 students will have the opportunity to

attend lessons every day for 2 weeks.

The cost will be $50 per student to cover the cost of

lessons and bus fares. The swimming lessons are

given by AUSTWIM trained school staff.

Permission notes and more information will be giv-

en to parents in Week 1 of Term 4.

2019 KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENT

Do you have children starting kindergarten at OBPS

in 2019, or know somebody who does?

Please ensure that all enrolment forms are returned

to the front office as soon as possible.

Application forms can be obtained from https://

education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/going-to-a-

public-school/enrolment/primary-school-

enrolment, or picked up from the school front

office.

MEAT FREE MONDAYS

Don’t forget that Mondays are “meat-free” in our

canteen! Please refrain from ordering meat prod-

ucts on Mondays, as they are unavailable.

This is part of a world wide sustainability initiative

that our school participates in - you can read about

it at https://www.meatfreemondays.com/schools/.

KINDERGARTEN PRIMARY CAREGIVER SURVEY

If you are a parent or carer of a kindergarten stu-

dent, and have not yet completed the Primary Care-

givers Survey, please go to http://srcentre.com.au/

Primary_Caregiver_Survey to complete.

Not only does this survey provide valuable infor-

mation to help improve the kindergarten experi-

ence, but we will also be awarded vouchers to en-

rich our kindergarten classes if 75% of parents par-

ticipate!

TELL THEM FROM ME - PARENT SURVEY

This term, our school will be participating in the

Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of

the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys on student

engagement. The survey asks parents and carers

questions about different factors that are known to

impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand

parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s

experience at school. These include: communica-

tion between parents/carers and staff, activities

and practices at home and parent/carer views on

the school's support of learning and behaviour. This

valuable feedback will help our school make practi-

cal improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on

smartphones, ipads, tablets, laptops or computers.

The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to

complete and is completely confidential. The parent

survey will be available until 13 October. Although

participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your

responses are very much appreciated.

More information about the survey is available at:

http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au.

NON-TEACHING STAFF SCHOOL INTRODUCTION TRAINING DAYS

The Department of Education is seeking people who are interested in commencing work within public

schools in your area.

The School Administrative and Support (SAS) Staff Reference Group welcome any people looking to start

work in school administration to enrol in our Non-Teaching Staff School Introduction training programs.

The aim of this training is to provide participants with an overview of school administrative roles. Participa-

tion in these introduction days are not a guarantee of employment with the Department of Education. Par-

ticipants are required to obtain a Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance for paid work at their

own cost. https://www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/child-safe-organisations/working-with-children-check .

Payment is then made through Service NSW prior to attending day one. To enable processing for potential

employment, participants are required to bring necessary completed forms, which appear on the MyPL

registration page. Many schools have a policy of not employing current parents or associates within their

own school.

It would be desirable if participants had a sound knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.

The training days will be held in the following locations:

Goonellabah office – Wednesday 17 October & Friday 9 November 2018

Tweed Heads South Public School – Wednesday 24 October & Tuesday 13 November 2018

Maclean Public School – Wednesday 24 October & Tuesday 13 November 2018

William Bayldon Public School – Wednesday 24 October & Tuesday 13 November 2018

Frederickton Public School – Friday 26 October & Friday 9 November 2018

Port Macquarie Library – Thursday 25 October & Wednesday 7 November 2018

Forster office – Monday 22 October 2018 & Tuesday 6 November 2018

To secure a place in this course, participants will need to register online as a community member on MyPL.

Go to the following site https://mypl.education.nsw.gov.au/ and select Register. After completing the de-

tails, an email will be sent with instructions on how to get started and select the venue you wish to attend.

The course codes are Day 1: NR22842, Day 2: NR22844.

There will be no cost to the participant other than them acquiring their WWCC prior to attending the train-

ing. Tea and coffee will be available throughout the day. Participants are to provide their own morning tea

and lunch.

Further information can be provided by contacting the SAS Staff Reference Group (SRG) Coffs Harbour on

(02)6623 5911 or by email at [email protected]

COLOUR FUN RUN - SUNDAY 4TH NOVEMBER

On Sunday 4th November, we will be holding a school colour run, as our major fundraiser for

2018!

About the Program

The School Fun-Run promotes healthy and active lifestyles while helping us raise funds! It’s all about partic-

ipation, with students treated to a great day as a reward for their fundraising efforts. Family support is key

to our fundraising success and we encourage everyone to get involved.

How Does My Child Fundraise?

Firstly, go to schoolfundraising.com.au and create a student profile page. Everything to do with your fund-

raising revolves around this page.

Students who raise just $10 will receive a reward for their effort. The more they raise, the better their re-

ward – don’t forget to check these out in the sponsorship form!

On the day:

There will be a variety of events students and families can participate in, as well as a sausage sizzle running

throughout the event. We encourage you to make a day of it and bring the whole family along!

Thank you, good luck and happy fundraising!
