Head of Welfare Corner At this time, we are all concerned about how things are changing and what learning is going to look like. All teachers at AICS are working very hard to ensure that resources and learning opportunities are being provided so that no student will be disadvantaged. We also want to make sure that we consider the welfare of everyone. Please read through the leaflet to help you ensure that you are prepared for learning online. Remember, learning doesn’t need to happen in school. It can happen anywhere and should continue during this time of disruption so let’s work together to make sure that we all know how to make the most out of this experience. If you do have any problems, concerns or issues during this time that you would like to discuss please send an email to [email protected] so I can help you in any way that I can. A bad case of flu! Welcome to the new pandemic! It has many names; C19, Covid19, Corona Virus or just a “Bad case of Flu!” Researchers say it’s just a bad case of flu that presents itself every 100 years; 1720, 1820, 1920 and now 2020. It seems that once in 100yrs the world is devastated by a pandemic. Each time the advise was to self-isolate, in order to stop the spreading of the virus. Stay home, STAY SAFE! Many Countries are following the protocol of a lockdown. In this time it is crucial to keep calm and pass this test sent to ALL muslims by Allah SWT in a positive manner. At AICS we are taking this opportunity to teach our kindy’s the importance of hand washing and social distancing. Our kindergarten students have been handwashing regularly; every two periods. We have learnt the handwashing song: “wash your dirty hands, wash your dirty hands, wishy washy wishy washy, wash your dirty hands.” We also learnt the hand washing procedure, which is as follows; one squirt of liquid soap, rub and scrub, especially between your fingers. We spoke about the whole process taking approximately 20 seconds. In KC we found it was the same amount of time it took us to sing “happy birthday to you.” entire song individually. We emphasized not to waste water, and to turn the tap off soon after we had finished. We also discussed the most important part of handwashing –was not the soap BUT to dry our hands at the very end!

We also practiced good

hygiene such at catching our cough into our elbows,

not hands or palm. We remembered to dispose our used tissues into a

closed bin and washing our hands straight after

sneezing, eating and toilet.

In KC we also practiced social distancing. We

marked an ‘X’ on the spot for us to stand then an ‘X’ 1

to 2 metres away for safe distancing with friends and family. We found that it was an arms length apart from our body. In my class I have used

Glen 20 after Glen 20 after Glen 20 to keep surfaces disinfected. We also have the cleaner who does rounds around the block regularly cleaning hand rails, door knobs and high traffic surfaces. I have also stopped using the air conditioner and kept windows and

doors open for FRESH AIR! Finally, what can you do at home? Well, the Government has advised that it is ideal to

stay at home where possible, do not go out for any unnecessary errands or rounds. If you have any concerns about your symptoms; you can simply Google: health Direct and

utilize their symptoms checker. I know that with the virus going about we might be unsure about some things. If you are unsure about COVID 19 and you want to be a little more informed go to www.health.gov.au and search for COVID 19 infection control training

(30min). It has extremely valuable information. We at AICS, are doing everything to keep our students and teachers safe during these uncertain times. While schools still remain

open, this may be a great time to spend with your children and loved ones as tomorrow is NOT promised to everyone!

InSha Allah we can follow the precautionary measures to keep ourselves and our precious children safe. May Allah SWT protect you and your families from all the

calamities that we are facing.

Little Critters!

Term One marks the start of a very exciting year for the year Two students, as we have been learning about little critters living in the soil. Students are not only learning about their features but also investigating how they make the soil healthy and happy for the plants. The students have been studying about ways to help the critters grow, reproduce and in turn improve the quality of the soil with the intention of creating fertile soil for humans to produce food and fibre. As a part of our Science unit “Little critters”, Year 2 went on an excursion to The Royal Botanic Gardens, to attend their naturistic program called “Mini Beasts”. The students were able to observe the mini beasts and come in close contact with their habitats. They discussed similarities, differences and other features of the critters. They also learned a very important lesson “How our environment provides for the needs of all the living things”? Ms Habiba Malik 2C Class Teacher

Science & Technology

Year Four students have been busily preparing assessment tasks over the last few weeks. In Science and Technology, students have studied the different means in which animals are classified. Students were then tasked with developing a classification system of their own, integrating existing ways and their own ideas. Students had the opportunity to present their final product, using posters, PowerPoint and games.

In Creative Arts, students have been studying the art movement of Cubism. Students have enjoyed exploring different colours, shapes and placement whilst creating artworks of their own. Mr. Daniel Ferrin 4B Classroom Teacher

Diversity is our strength!

Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Harmony Day occurs on the 21 March each year and this day celebrates

Australia’s cultural diversity. The ongoing theme of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’. Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for all. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand that all Australians belong equally to this nation and enrich it. Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.

At AICS, we celebrate inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for all

Australians, from the traditional owners of the land to those who have come from many countries around the world. AICS’s students believe that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights and have the potential to contribute constructively to the development and well-being of their societies.

AICS’s Students believe, emphasis and apply the teaching of their beloved

religion. The Qur’an places emphasis on the oneness of human beings. It introduces the idea of common human origin and ancestry at four different places and says that humans have their origin in a single cell or soul. Student believe that the unity of humanity is never compromised and the differences that exist among people are resolved through a process of mutual understanding based on ideas that are divine revealed.

We are heading into the final stages of Term 1 and it is great to see that students are still showing dedication and commitment to their studies in English. With assessment due dates rapidly approaching, it is important students ensure they have read and understood the task requirements and the marking criteria. All students are encouraged to speak to their teachers if they have any questions or concerns. It is imperative that students check their class Edmodo page as online submissions will be made available for students that are staying home in light of COVID-19. I would like to reiterate that it is the student’s responsibility to ensure their assessment has been correctly submitted. Technical difficulties will not be considered as reason for late or non-submission. For this reason, it is important students do not leave submission until the last minute. Although NAPLAN has been cancelled for 2020, Year 7 and Year 9 will continue to develop their skills in reading, writing and language conventions. These skills and knowledge are fundamental to students’ education. In addition, in Year 10, students are required to sit a Minimum Standards Test. The content that is included in this test is similar to what is covered in the NAPLAN examinations. With the recent developments in COVID-19, the English Department have been working to provide online learning for all students 7-12. Our goal is to ensure learning continues for our students and that they are provided with structured activities that can be completed at home. As per the instructions from the College, students are to follow their normal timetable each day and check their class Edmodo page for the work they are to complete. Once completed, they must submit their work through the submission box on their class page. Teachers will be noting the names of students that do not complete work and will be informing parents. Students can communicate with their teacher through Edmodo or email. However, we ask that students be mindful of the time they contact their teachers. Emails and messages should only be sent during school hours. Year 12 Half Yearly Examinations are fast approaching and we encourage our senior students to use their study time effectively. Students should ensure they have reflected on the feedback they have received both in class and in their previous assessments. We wish them the best of luck. Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to welcome Priya Sen, Azhaar Aziz and Sufyan Badar to the English department. We are looking forward to the knowledge, experience and enthusiasm they can bring to the department. Ms Marisa Behrens English Head of Department

As Salam Alaikum,

It has been a great start to the academic year! Term one is almost over. Students have adapted well into the learning of Mathematics and Technology. Our Department is fortunate to have experienced and dedicated teachers who are always ready to go out of their way to help students learning Mathematics and Technology.

Mr McAllister, Mr Eser and Dr Goundar have been teaching Mathematics for several years at AICS. They all have a wealth of mathematical ideas and have been teaching mathematic for many years and are always ready to assist you and your child in any matters related to Mathematics.

On the other hand, the Technology Department is flourishing well with Mr Kalogeropoulos and Ms Younis. Students are enjoying their classes very well.

This year our Department is fortunate to have three new teachers: Mr Ata-Ur-Rehman Bhatti, Mr Jaime Araya and Ms Aamina Younis. They all are experienced Mathematics and Technology teachers, and we are looking forward to all the knowledge and experience they can bring to our Department.

With assessment due dates rapidly approaching, students need to start preparing in advanced on the topics covered in their assessment task. Parents were given subject course outline on Parent information night, however, if you need a copy of your child's Mathematics and Technology course outline, please email me or ask your child to obtain a copy from their teacher.

For Year 7 -12 Mathematics, our school has adapted to the Cambridge Mathematics textbook. Our school provides this textbook to year 7 – 10 students and year 11 and 12 students are required to buy this textbook on their own. Students can also have electronic copies on their electronic devices as well.

Year 12 Extension classes continue to run on a fortnightly basis. These classes are an opportunity for students to consolidate and extend their knowledge and skills in Mathematics. All Year 12 Mathematics students are encouraged to take full advantage of these classes. At the end of this term, Year 12 students will be doing their Half Yearly Examinations. Students are therefore requested to plan their revision for this examination very carefully. This examination will provide teachers, students and parents with a lot of information about future preparation and planning.

Our Department has been continuously running after school support class for years 7 – 11 students who need extra support in mathematics. Students can take advantage of this opportunity to clarify their doubts, getting assistance in completing their homework, prepare

for their coming up assessments as well as getting to engage in peer learning. This support class is taken by Dr Goundar and runs only on every Wednesday's for this Term 1, from 3.20 pm to 4 pm in room F5. Students who want to join this class need to register with me or Dr Goundar first.

Teachers use the various educational platform such as google classroom and Edmodo to provide additional support to students to enhance their learning out of the classroom and updating parents about daily classroom activities and assessments.

Due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the entire education system will be affected greatly. In case of lock down, our school has taken steps to prepare for remote learning by using Edmodo

educational platform. Students will undertake lessons at home under guidance from their teachers using videos, PowerPoints, quizzes, skype and many other ways to deliver lessons effectively.

If you have any questions throughout the year, please feel free to contact either your child's teacher or me. Your child's education is our top priority, and we are always more than happy to talk and provide necessary help wherever possible.

It was a rainy and not a good start, to say the least, we got all got in the bus and reached the National Park in 1 hour and 30 mins to our surprise the weather had calmed down and the sun had come out fortunately. We separated into our class groups and had recess, after. That we headed to visit the different sites. There were several places we went to by the highlights included visiting the hospital where we saw the conditions the patients lived in and the morgue were the autopsy of the dead was preformed. It was interesting to see how different things were done at the time. Once everyone (all the classes) had seen everything we call came together too have lunch. After lunch we headed back to the where the buses had dropped us, it was a long way back and several stairs were climbed. Then the buses came and we left for school. It was tiring but a worthwhile experience. Overall I enjoyed visiting the Manly Quarantine Station. Habiba Kamran 10C

Year 12 Studies of Religion Excursion On Wednesday 11th March – Year 12 Studies of Religion students had an in-depth experience of their topic of Judaism. This Excursion was a way for students to gain insight into what a Synagogue Services are about and an understanding of the event of the Holocaust. Firstly, students visited Temple Emanuel Synagogue at Woollahra, where they guided through the features of a Synagogue and importance of Synagogue Services by Reverend (Rabbi) Sam Zwarentstein. It was very impressive to see our students engage in this experience in a very positive way, and willing to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the topic. Students then went to the Sydney Jewish Museum, in Darlinghurst. Students were provided the opportunity to have a talk by a childhood Holocaust survivor and how the Holocaust has had an impact on their life. And Why it is important for the current generation to hear and understand these stories. After the story students received a guided tour of the museum, gaining a deeper knowledge of the event of the Holocaust. Having this experience when they did, allowed students to have an understanding of the event that has now shaped the Jewish Faith. AISC Year 12 Studies of Religion students were wonderful ambassadors of our school and received nothing but positive praise from the Jewish members of the museum and Reverend Sam.
