SOCIAL STUDIES

Team 1 students are now moving into the topics of prehistory and the beginnings of civilization. Some topics that we will investigate are: how scientists use fossils and artifacts to draw conclusions about early humans, how people became and survived as hunter-gatherers, the origins of farming, and how modern humans came to migrate around the Earth. We are also working on the writing process and how to support your claim/main idea with details. TIP: Please be sure that as we start our civilizations, if there is no written homework, have your student study for 15 minutes to review what was covered in class. Students need to be attentive to their work and need to use their proofreading and editing skills on every assignment.

Next up students will be working in the Decimal Ops book computing with decimals and percents. Just think of all the computing that will be going on with the shopping season upon us. Parent tip – Next time you have to go food shopping feel free to ask our mathematicians to help figure out the better deals in the supermarket, you might be pleasantly surprised! Please encourage your child to utilize the resources available to them for extra help i.e. Khan Academy and Math XL. These sites have videos and exercises to help our students with problems/misconceptions they may be experiencing. Math – Mrs. Wells – [email protected]

SCIENCE

Team 1 students have successfully learned and applied basic science process skills of making scientific observations, inferences and metric measurement. In our 1st unit, Astronomy, they have explored “The Big Bang Theory” and the creation of our universe. They have begun their venture into our planet, Earth, in space. They have discovered how Earth rotates on its axis, revolves around the sun, and the time it takes to complete those movements in space. Through modeling and real-life experiences, students have applied how gravity and inertia affect us on Earth, and the other planets and objects in our solar system, galaxy and universe. Team 1 scientists have improved their skill of note-taking, and working effectively in cooperative, project-based learning activities. Students have shown growth, improved responsibility, and confidence in their success. Keep up the good work!! Science – Mr. DeBassio – [email protected]

LANGUAGE ARTS

Who are you right now, as a reader, writer, and human being, and who do you hope to be by the end of middle school? Students will reflect on and revisit this question at the end of the year in the Change Unit. We are exploring elements of fiction such as character, setting, plot structure, conflict, and point of view. Our reading will include short stories and independent novels that lend themselves to these elements. Students have also written their first argument piece based off of a question from the short story “Gaston.” This genre of writing investigates both sides of a topic and uses textual evidence to support their thinking. TIP: Please encourage your child to complete homework and turn it in on time. Also, you can utilize Finalsite to get more details about homework that may not be written in their assignment pads. Social Studies

Students are about to wrap up their study of 9/11. This year we had a unique opportunity to really learn how to answer research based questions by starting with the basics and moving through the process of using text evidence to support our answers. The very first step was identifying evidence to support our answer and annotating the highlighted text evidence in articles to see what main ideas surface repeatedly. Then, we moved to planning our essay, and we will complete the process of writing our essays with evidence that is parenthetically cited to avoid plagiarism. We will be continuing our study of geography with daily geography questions as well. Next up, the five themes of geography (location, place, regions, human environment interaction, and movement) will be taught and students will practice finding and providing real life examples to demonstrate each theme. The five themes will be embedded in future units. Our next unit of study will be Early Humans and the Agricultural Revolution. Get ready as Social Studies class will be moving to the ancient world soon!

Science

In science class, we have successfully completed the first few sections of our Astronomy Unit. Students have shown tremendous progress and have settled into our classroom routines successfully. We will continue to work on good note-taking strategies and close reading skills utilizing the text. Students are working on building their science vocabulary through text exploration and we add to our word wall weekly. Each student will continue their work on understanding key ideas as well as developing their critical thinking skills. We have been using the science vocabulary and identifying relationships between them. We have explored the Big Bang Theory, created models of the Earth, sun and moon and explored the relationship between gravity and distance. Students have been doing a great job relating these concepts to “real life” situations. Students have been working in cooperative groups to focus on creating models that explain Earth’s movement in our solar system. Remember…..Daily preparation, organization and coming to class prepared are essential components to a student’s success.

Science – Mrs. Cruciani – [email protected]

Language Arts In Language Arts, students have been working hard on setting goals for their short answer questions, narrative writing, and reading comprehension. They have also been discovering new processes to unlock strategies to understand high level concepts of character growth, life lessons, overarching themes, and the impact of the human condition in their reading. These strategies will inspire students to read closer to see how literature teaches us about life. These strategies include Notice and Note Signposts and using URACE to answer and support short answer questions. Shared Inquiry will also become a new strategy that will help students unlock deeper meaning through close reading and questioning what they read.

The major task coming their way is writing an essay and including evidence from sources with proper citation. This will engage students in the process of paraphrasing and parenthetical citation in order to learn how to include evidence from texts to make their writing more powerful while avoiding plagiarism. Diving into this task will engage the students in the writing process: brainstorming, planning, writing, revising, and editing their work. This process will be broken down into small parts where students will have a chance to work each part of the process, and truly devote time to creating and revising paragraph by paragraph in order to achieve their most powerful writing piece. Please refer to the Writer’s Toolbox frequently which should be kept in order to use as a resource throughout the process.

We look forward to learning about living organisms! Science – Mrs. Theriault – [email protected] Mr. Thomas – [email protected]

7thGrade Math – The next Unit in your child’s math class this year is Accentuate the Negative: Positive and Negative Numbers. Students have experienced positive and negative numbers informally in their everyday world--in temperatures, in sports scores, and in game contexts. Students have intuitively used operations on integers to make sense of these situations; now they will develop formal ways to compute with these numbers. In this Unit, the focus is on understanding and developing systematic ways to add, subtract, multiply and divide positive and negative numbers. While working on this Unit, students will use positive and negative numbers to represent problem situations. Students will develop algorithms for computation. 7th/8thGrade Advanced Math – The next Unit in your child’s math class this year is Moving Straight Ahead: Linear Relationship. In this Unit, students are developing skills in areas that are traditionally known as algebra. This Unit introduces them to situations that can be modeled with linear relationships and graphed with straight lines. In the Grade 8 Unit, Thinking with Mathematical Models, they will revisit the use of linear models before shifting the focus to nonlinear relationships. In this Unit, student identify, represent, and interpret linear relationships. They learn to recognize linear relationships by the constant rate of change between two variables in a verbal context, table, graph, and equation. Ways to help your 8th grader be successful:

Tip #2 Create a homework space. It is important for students to have a designated location at home to complete their homework. This space may be in the living room, an office, the dining room table, your child’s bedroom, etc. When selecting a homework space, make sure the area is clean, quiet and away from distractions. By creating a designated homework area, your child will be able to focus and be more productive. Homework is an essential part of practice and preparation for tests and quizzes. The better prepared your child is, the more successful they will be at school!

8th Grade Math – Students are finishing up the Unit "Thinking with Mathematical Models". The primary focus of this unit is to create, organize and analyze data. Students will construct scatter plots with bivariate data and investigate patterns between the two variables. In addition students will then create algebraic models for the data and solve problems in context to the data. Our next unit is titled"Finding Pythagoras " (Pythagorean Theorem). Key Vocabulary: Scatter Plot, Correlation, Best Fit Line, Inverse Variation, y=mx+b, slope, y-intercept Algebra I - Students have begun the unit on equations. We will be looking at all aspects of equations, such as the different types of solution sets, how to solve equations, and the effect of changing variables. The students will really enjoy working hands-on with the equations. Key Topics that you can discuss with your children are: Algebraic Patterns, Table of Values, Equations, Expressions, Inequalities, Solving one-step/multi-step algebraic equations, and Distributive Property. Next up: Systems.

SCIENCE

Grade 8 science students have been analyzing objects in motion. They have set objects in motion in order to make measurements and gather data to determine both the velocity and the acceleration of the object. Using a data table, calculations and a graph as well as a physical representation of their object; students were able to find similarities between each of the representations of motion.

Next, grade 8 students are exploring forces, and as an initial activity they were asked to find their weight in Newtons. Using their knowledge of mass and acceleration, students were able to calculate their pull of gravity on Earth. You might want to ask your son/daughter, “How much do you weigh?” and see what their response might be.

Students are now able to access their text online. They have received their usernames and passwords. This will allow students to have text read to them as they read along. The online textbook also gives them access to any resources they may need. The website address is my.hrw.com.

They are conducting research to see what is currently being done to improve the issues as well as what needs to be done, and why we should act. Issues chosen by the students to examine, include: air pollution, invasive species, poaching, noise pollution, animal testing, cosmetics, and deforestation. They are narrowing down their topic and will be developing a product to demonstrate their learning. 8th grade: Students are researching dress codes, animal experimentation and the issue of plastic bags in order to prepare to debate. They are finding valid evidence to support their reasoning behind their assertions, within each topic. Reminders: Milford Association for Gifted Education (M.A.G.E.) – Any membership forms and / or Fundraiser proceeds can be returned to me if they have not yet been returned. One of the themes the PPS group is working with for our 6th grade students are Self-Management skills. Below are some tips that the students were instructed in during Advisory this month.

Challenge your student and ask if they are monitoring their own work!!

• DO know your deadlines. • DO make a calendar of stages and final due dates. • DO include social events on this calendar for time management. • DO understand the assignment and expectations. • DO give yourself a quiet place to study with all the materials you need. • DO give yourself brief breaks. • DON'T put work off until the last minute; you'll be too frantic to focus. • DON'T do your homework late at night or in bed. • DON'T let yourself be bored; find the aspect of the project or paper that interests you —

if you're dying of boredom, something's not right.

Fall is here and with that it’s time to snuggle up inside and read. Students may borrow up to 3 items at a time for two weeks at a time from our school library. We have a large collection of fiction and nonfiction titles, as well as graphic novels, traditional comic books, and audio books. To search our catalog from home, visit destiny.milforded.org.
