Once upon a time, in a far away land, there lived a handsome prince who spent his days longing for a princess to marry. Not just anyone would do. She would have to be a real princess.

The prince traveled all over the world in hopes of finding a princess suitable to marry.

There were plenty of princesses to choose from, but the problem was trying to figure out if they were real, authentic princesses! Some of them were just pretending to be in hopes of winning the prince’s heart.

A. Open page in motion: prince sitting forlorn on his bed. Princes dog looks up at him wagging tail slowly. (nightime seen out of window).

The prince came home from his long trip, exhausted and sad that he had not yet found a suitable princess to marry.

That night, a terrible storm came upon the castle. Fierce thunder and lightening lit up the sky, and the rain poured down like buckets of water. The storm raged on for what seemed like hours.

All of a sudden, in the middle of the night, there was a knock at the city gate. The king himself went to find out who could possibly be out in such a terrible storm, and at such a late hour.

The king opened the gate to find a princess standing out in the storm, freezing and shivering. What a sight she was!

The storm had made quite a mess of her. The rain had completely soaked her hair and clothes; it was running down her legs, into her shoes, and out the toes! In spite of this, she insisted she was a real princess, looking for a place to stay.

A. Open page in motion:Int. bed chamber.Princess seated dries head with towel. King stands next to her motioning back and forth from her to Queen (frowning) standing next to bed.

B. Touch Queen and she shakes her head and put her fists on her hips.

C. Touch bed and Queen pulls off sheets and blankets in one move. Then places the pea.

The old king was kind enough to let her in, but the queen wasn’t convinced that the girl was a princess. “We shall all find out soon enough,” thought the queen, as she left to prepare a bed for the visiting princess.

The queen took all of the sheets and blankets off the bed, and when the mattress was bare, she placed a single green pea on the bed

The queen then laid twenty mattresses on top of the pea. As if that wasn’t enough, she also placed twenty down-filled blankets on top of the mattresses.

It was on this bed that the princess had to spend the entire night, on top of twenty mattresses and twenty blankets.

The next morning, the queen was quite curious and asked the princess how her night was.

“I’m afraid it was very bad, your highness, as I have barely had any sleep,” replied the princess. “This bed must have had something quite awful and hard in it because my body feels black and blue. It’s terrible!”

When the queen heard the princess complain about the uncomfortable bed, she was convinced that the girl was a real princess indeed. Why, only a true princess would be so sensitive to feel a pea buried so far beneath her!

The queen gasped in delight, gave the princess a big hug, and told her that she must be introduced to the prince at once.

At first sight, the prince fell in love with the princess. Imagine his delight when the queen told him that she was, indeed, a TRUE princess.

The prince and princess were married in a grand and royal affair, and everyone in the Kingdom was invited.
