Women of the ELCA June Combined Bible Study Pastoral Intern, Cheryl Davis, conducted the June combined Bible

study for the Women of the ELCA.

Hrang Hlei Graduates from Luther Seminary in St. Paul (see above pictures) Dr. Hrang Hlei graduated from Luther Seminary on May 17. He, his wife A Cer and children, Jessica and Luke, are living

now in Kent, Washington and pastoring Chin Immanuel Christian Church, a Chin refugee congregation, until the end of

this year when they will return to Myanmar (Burma) and teach at Myanmar Institute of Theology (MIT) in Yangon. He

invited professors and friends to a restaurant the night before graduation so he and A Cer could thank the many people

who have supported them financially, spiritually and as special Christian friends. He made special note of Judson

Memorial in Minneapolis and Prince of Peace, Appleton as people who were very special to his family. Chuck and Deb

Steinbach were happy to represent PoP at these events. You may remember that PoP Men's Bible Study groups paid for

A Cer and almost 2 year old Jessica to fly to USA, and Judson and PoP, through designated gifts, have paid for their

apartment these years as he researched, wrote and defended his PhD. He and the whole family have made a big impact

at the seminary, at his research congregations in Indianapolis, Minneapolis and Dallas, and now his Seattle

congregation. His education will soon have a big impact on future pastors and leaders at MIT in Myanmar.

PoP ELCA Advocacy Team

Prince of Peace has a new team--and all members are invited to participate.

ELCA Advocacy - Connecting faith and public life (SOURCE: www.elca.org/advocacy )

“As members of the ELCA, we believe that we are freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.

God uses our hands, through our direct service work and our voices, through our advocacy efforts, to restore a n d

reconcile our world. Through faithful advocacy, the ELCA lives out our Lutheran belief that governments can help

advance the common good.”

“Why is advocacy important? Isn’t our direct service work enough? As the ELCA, we believe God is calling us into the

world to serve together. Through our direct service, we aid immediate needs before us. Through our advocacy work, we

impact systemic, long-lasting change.

The public policies our officials write, amend and ultimately adopt, can have ongoing effects on our neighbors who are

struggling with hunger and living with poverty, as well as God’s creation. By telling our lawmakers how Lutheran

ministries help our world and urging them to advance legislation that reflects these commitments, we are helping

create opportunities to overcome poverty, promote peace and dignity, and defend God’s creation.”

See more at: www.elca.org/en/Our-Work/Publicly-Engaged-Church/Advocacy/Why-Advocacy#sthash.hkIpiQMF.dpuf

The new PoP ELCA Advocacy Team was formed to:

• Help PoP members grow in awareness of ELCA efforts on our behalf.

• Support the efforts of ELCA Faith and Society by increasing member participation in:

o ELCA e-Advocacy Network

o Lutheran Office for Public Policy in Wisconsin

o Current social statement process

o Interfaith advocacy groups, such as ESTHER, Bread for the World and Wisconsin Council of Churches.

• Provide opportunities to learn about and discuss important ideas and issues in a non-partisan, faith-informed way

• Help PoP members grow in confidence and skills of using their citizen voices.

INTERESTED IN JOINING THE TEAM? The next meeting of the Advocacy Team will be Tuesday, July 28, at 6:30 at

church.

Volunteers for each work day will be a mix from the different faith communities. Prince of Peace is scheduled to provide

volunteer workers on 4 of the work days and to provide site support on 3 days. PoP work days include August 11 & 26 and

September 12 & 30; site support days include August 18, September 19 and October 1. The number of people needed each

work day is limited to 3 or 4. They are bound to fill fast so if you would like help with this project, whether as a worker on the

Lutheran World Relief ALERT

We Need School Kits! Watch For Sales!

Lutheran World Relief School Kits contain simple

items that make a big difference. Your donations

help families living in poverty to send their children to school!

Right now LWR is in urgent need of School Kits to fulfill requests from

partners around the world. Your donations reach places like Syria, where

LWR recently distributed 6,350 school kits to families affected by the

ongoing conflict. Learning leads to a better life for them, their families and

their communities. Items needed for the kits are:

70-sheet ruled notebooks (no loose-leaf paper) approximately 8” X 10

½” (4 needed per kit)

30 centimeter rulers (may have inches on reverse side)

Pencil sharpeners

Blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)

2 ½" erasers

Black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink)

Box of 16 or 24 crayons

NO PENCILS

The items may be put on the white rack in the storage room behind the

library. If you prefer to give a monetary donation, please make check

payable to WELCA, noting LWR Kits, and send to Jeannine Bultman at

W6072 Cornflower Drive, Appleton, WI 54915. Questions? Call Lorraine

Krenz at 993-1880. Thank you for your support.

1,018,658 Meals for Starving Children and Counting!!

Did you know that this is Prince of Peace’s fifth year of being a partner

congregation in sponsoring the Feed My Starving Children Fox Cities MobilePack?

As of 2014, the MobilePacks have packed 1,019,658 meals for children in

countries around the world. FMSC partners with reliable organizations in over 65

countries worldwide – and the food safely arrives. The reality of the number of meals we have packed to date is

that 2,790 children have received meals every day for a year! It is true…what we do locally…can and does have an

impact globally. This year the Fox Cities MobilePack (July 20-22 at First English Lutheran Church - Ballard Road

site) has a goal of an additional 200,000 meals which will feed 548 children for a year. Join us in making this a

reality:

▪ Go to the Prince of Peace website and click on the link for FMSC to sign up to pack.

▪ Donations continue to be accepted to help pay for the ingredients to pack the meals –

at 22 cents per meal, we need to raise $48,000. Checks can be written out to Prince of Peace with

FMSC in the memo line.

Thank you for your support in this meaningful outreach!

PARISH EDUCATION

JULY Calendar:

7/5 VBS Slideshow at both services

THANK YOU to All of Our Awesome VBS

Volunteers! We had a fantastic time at VBS! We had fun with science

and God. It wouldn’t have been the same without all of

the FABULOUS kids and the AMAZING volunteers that

joined us. We thank all of the volunteers that made it

happen. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of

people!

Thanks to Everyone who donated Food and

Craft Items for VBS! The kids made wonderful crafts, did exciting

experiments, played cool games and got to eat yummy

snacks!

VBS Slideshow on July 5th At both the 8:00 and 9:45 services on July 5th, there will

be a slideshow to show all of the great fun, fellowship

and learning about God’s plan we did at VBS.

Worship Notes Sunday School students entering grades 3-6 in the fall –

this is for you! When you attend church services this

summer, fill out an “I Attended Church Today” worship

note form and you’ll have a head start on your

expectations for the fall. The forms can be found in the

bin under the Sunday School bulletin board in the

narthex.

Sunday School Volunteers 2015-16 Sign-Up Anyone interested in signing up to help with Sunday

School for the 2015-16 school year is invited to sign up

now! There is a clipboard in the bin on Katie’s office

door. Flip to the grade (Pre-K through 6th) you would

like to help with and sign up to be either a teacher or

assistant (shepherd) in that classroom. We also have

an opportunity to work 1-on-1 with a few kids as a

Sunday School Buddy. If you would be interested in

leading a 20 minute activity on occasional Sundays in

the nursery for preschoolers during the 9:20 service,

you can sign up for that, too. We even have a separate

sheet in case you would rather be on a list of

substitutes. Make a difference in the faith journey of

our PoP children – sign up to help with Sunday School

TODAY. Confirmation students – please don’t wait to

sign up.

Sunday School Superstars Don’t forget to check out the photo board outside the

2nd grade classroom. You can see some of the things

that our kids are busy with during the year as they

learn and grow with Jesus. There are many new VBS

pictures up from June. As pictures are removed from

the board they will placed outside Katie’s office for you

to take.

Have a GREAT summer!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Community Outreach Thank you to our Salvation Army workers for June 8th: Frank &

Lorraine Krenz and Dick & Gwynne Sauer. PLEASE NOTE: Those

of you working at Salvation Army do NOT have to be there until

10:00 a.m. the morning you are scheduled to work.

Book Club The Book Club has chosen Margot by Jillian Cantor to read this

summer. They were two young Jewish girls in hiding from the

Nazis. This novel has the premise that Anne Frank's sister

survived the concentration camp and immigrated to Philadelphia

where she was quietly living under an assumed name until the

movie came out in 1959 and rocked her world. We will meet July

23 at 1:15 p.m. to discuss. "The novel not only feels like a prayer

for Margot and Anne, but for the many voiceless men and women

whose memory deserves recognition." Come and join us.

Fox Valley Lutheran Homes Hosting

Educational Seminar July 13th Have questions about your medications? What are

common drug side effects? Which drugs should you

not take concurrently? How do over-the-counter

drugs or herbal preparations interact with

prescription medications? You may have some of

these questions answered!

On Monday, July 13th at 10:30 AM, Fox Valley Homes

is hosting a pharmacist who will address some of

these concerns. In addition to a presentation there

will be time for a question and answer period. If you

wish to attend please call Ruth at 850-3623 to

register. You may leave a message with your name

and phone number. Fox Valley Lutheran Homes is

located at 425 N. Linwood Ave. in Appleton.

Early notice: August 31st program will feature

information related to Medicare supplemental

insurance coverage. It is a good time to review your

coverage prior to the enrollment date for 2016.

There will be more information later.

Garden Flower Sunday

Sunday, July 19 Cut some of your flowers and

arrange them in your favorite

vase, or if you have a gorgeous

patio flower pot, bring it to PoP

and set it up by the altar for Sunday, July 19.

Flowers can be dropped off on Friday, July 17

before 3:00 p.m. Show off all those beautiful

flowers in and around your house in church for our

Garden Flower Sunday! Thanks so much.

Christmas in August

It's that time of year again! Christmas in August has started!! This

is the 20th Anniversary of this program. It was organized as a way

for families to experience and teach the joy of giving, while at the

same time providing a needed service in the community. This

project partners Social Concerns Ministry and Outagamie County

Health and Human Services to provide area K through 8th grade

children with new jeans, short sleeved t-shirt, sweatshirt, haircut

and shoes so they can start the fall school year looking good and

feeling good about themselves.

Take the opportunity to shop with your children or grandchildren,

knowing that the clothes they are picking out will make a less

fortunate child excited to go back to school. This worthwhile

project cannot be successful without your help and active

participation. Look for the Christmas trees in both entryways.

Please take an ornament or two, purchase the item and

place it back in the boxes provided with the ornament

attached by August 9th OR take a cash envelope and

place it in the collection plate during any service.

The cash donations will be used to purchase

clothes, undergarments and to pay for the

Rogan's and NewStyle Salon’s invoices.

Call or email Nette Kimball at 920-851-4032

or [email protected] if you have any

questions or would like to volunteer to help

with the behind the scenes action.

Box Tops Thank you for saving the box tops

and labels for education. The

collection box is located in the

hallway above the mailboxes

across from the offices. Please check the expiration

date on the box tops. General Mills will NOT accept

box tops that have expired.

We appreciate your support! Each box top is worth

$.10 and they add up fast. The teachers can use this

money for things not covered in their budget.

Summer Sonshine for your Soul Summer is here, but as the days are heating up, do you find

your faith growing cold? It can be tempting to trade time with

God for that Brewer game or barbeque! But don’t let your faith

burn out just because it’s time for summer break. Pack your

picnic bag with these faith essentials, and stay burning bright

for Jesus all summer long!

Sonscreen – Prayer. Cover yourself with prayer every day

for protection from burnout.

Snacks – Scripture. Taste and see the Lord is good all

summer by packing your favorite Scripture verses with you in

bite-sized pieces to nibble on throughout the day.

Songlasses – Focus. Keep your eyes on Jesus, and you

digital picture for the Fall/Winter 2015 Telephone

Directory!

What we need from you is a family or individual photo taken

sometime this summer. We are looking for pictures of you and your

family doing what you do best! Whether you are into hiking or biking,

traveling or cooking, Milwaukee Brewers, climbing the Colorado

mountains or volunteering, attending a special event or sitting with

your favorite pet, we want a picture of YOU!

Photos can be sent electronically through email to Brigetta

Wingender at [email protected] or drop off a hard copy at the

church office (attention – Cindy Romnek) in an envelope with your

name and phone number, as well as all of the people in the photo.

Photos will be scanned and returned. Our goal is to have as many

individual and family photos as we can by August 31st. If you or your

family are not able to submit a photo, we can take a photo of you at

church. If you would like more information, please contact Brigetta

Wingender – 882-0057 or Cindy Romnek – 739-5255.

Don’t forget to share the adventures of FLAT JESUS by emailing

the Timber Rattlers

Game

Take me out to the ball

game…take me out to the

park…buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks.

Make plans NOW to join us as the Rattlers battle

Peoria on Monday, July 29th at 7:05 p.m. It is

“bang for your buck” night at the stadium too.

Hot dogs and sodas are only $1.00 each.

Tickets are $8.00 each and space is limited.

Call Howard Ahrens at 687-9148 or Cindy

Romnek at 739-5255 to reserve your tickets, or

if you would like more information.

Where is “Flat” Jesus? Flat Jesus is one of the Prince of Peace summer

take home missions. It is a fun way for the

whole congregation, to keep connected as

a community of faith during the summer

months.

Flat Jesus is a physical reminder that Jesus is

always with us (Matthew 28:20), and that we

are always connected with one another, as the

body of Christ (1Corinthians 12:12-26).

Don’t forget to share the adventures of Flat

Jesus by emailing pictures (and stories!) to

[email protected], and look for your

photos and everyone else’s on the large Flat

Jesus display on Sunday mornings. We will also

post Flat Jesus on the PoP Facebook page. Flat

Jesus is available at the PoP “Welcome” window

in the narthex.

PARENTS AND OTHER CARING

ADULTS NEEDED! Our youth & confirmation ministries need you. Yes, you!

In order to help our young people grow a faith that is

vibrant and deep, we need caring adults and parents to

come alongside them. This ministry is FUN. It is SPIRIT-

FILLED. It is a JOURNEY! Contact Gloria Allhiser if you’re

interested in being a part of our confirmation ministry

this year, or if you’re interested in just learning more.

PARAMENTS/CANDLE VOLUNTEER FOR JULY

Proverbs 31 Ministries Proverbs 31 Ministries is a website designed for women by

women. It offers daily devotions sent right to your inbox

and online Bible Studies involving women from around

the world. The online Bible studies allow you to participate

from the comfort of your own home at a time that's

convenient for you. Your level of involvement is whatever

you can commit to. All you have to do is register for the

study and purchase the book the study is built on. You will

receive emails Monday through Friday with information on

what chapters to read. Also included are thought provoking

questions and a comment section that connects you with

other Bible study members and the leaders. If you want

more involvement, there are optional opportunities to

participate in small groups or live events on Facebook and

Twitter. Each study also offers a conference call series that

allows you to hear the author and other women speak on

the book's topic.

The next online study began on Monday, June 22, and is

based on The Mended Heart by Suzie Eller. It's not too

late to join. Check the website at www.proverbs31.org for

further details.
