bike!ON YOURMountain Biking is the recreational or competitive sport of riding bicycles

off-road, often over rough terrain, using specially designed bicycles.

“First up mountain Biking is generally a very physical

sport, you need strength, stamina, bike handling

skills and balance.

Mountain bikes share similarities with

other bicycles, but incorporate features

designed to enhance durability and

performance off road.

Mountain Biking can be defined into

the main categories namely those are

Cross Country (XC), Downhill (DH),

and trail riding, these can be done for

recreation and on a world international

stage.

Mountain bikers are often referred

to as self-reliant people, since you

are riding out into the bush or off

the main roads you should carry your

own tools and spares specific to your

bike. A good hydration system is also

recommended, you should have water

bottles or a hydration backpack with a

large capacity for long distance rides,

you should drink about 750ml of liquid

every 45 minutes in hot conditions, if

you are unsure of your physical ability

you should consult a physician before

embarking in this exciting sport.

If you are going to ride along the side

of the road this could be done with

simple equipment that should include,

closed shoes with good soles and a well

fitted helmet designed for cycling, with

a peak is preferential to avoid the bight

sun on your face, I always recommend

sunglasses, insects in your face and eyes

at high speed are not optimal!

More serious single track and trail

riding may require the inclusion of full

finger gloves, padded cycling shorts,

and long pants to protect your legs.

Downhill or very technical riding with

drops and jumps will require a strong

helmet, and elbow and knee protection

such as the illustrated picture of a top

downhill rider from South Africa.

Mountain Bikes are very specific, mainly

these bikes have a 26” wheel diameter,

a front air or liquid filled suspension

fork and for “soft tails” a suspended

rear swing arm with a rear shock.

In the last few years there has been a

big uptake in a larger wheeled bike

known as a 29er due to it’s 29” wheel

size, this is very popular in the multi day

stage race community, they are light

and roll very well over rough terrain in

cross country racing.

The most modern of these bikes have

hydraulic disk brakes and carbon fibre

frames, this gives good stopping ability

and a light frame, competitive cycling

is all about the weight of you bike, the

lighter it is, the more it costs.

Top brands that are no way endorsed

by me include, Trek, Giant, Specialized,

Bianchi and Merida. These bikes can

start as low as $500 and go up to

well over $10 000 depending on the

specification and your appetite for

spend.

So what bike do you get, well short

cross country riding and laps over the

same route with very little technical

riding will require the use of normally

a hartail bike, technical riding on rough

terrain will require a soft tail, but they

also weigh more and cost a lot more.

Downhill riding and racing requires very

specific equipment.

So now you are interested what next?

Get your bike and your helmet and go

ride. Or to get into it contact your local

bike shop or drop me a line for advice on

the right bikes for you and your family.

Keep the rubber side down!

History20th CENtURY

The Hadza became part of German East

Africa, though at the time the colony

was proclaimed there is no evidence

that Hadzaland had ever been visited

by Europeans. The earliest mention

of the Hadza in a written account is

in German explorer Oscar Baumann’s

Durch Massailand zur Nilquelle

(1894). The Hadza hid from Baumann

and other early explorers, and their

descriptions are based on second hand

accounts.

The first Europeans to report

actually meeting the Hadza are Otto

Dempwolff and Erich Obst. The latter

lived with them for eight weeks in

1911. German Tanganyika came under

British control at the end of the First

World War (1917), and soon after the

Hadza were written about by British

colonial officer F. J. Bagshawe. The

accounts of these early European

visitors portray the Hadza at the

beginning of the 20th century as living

in much the same way as they do

today. Early on Obst noted a distinction

between the ‘pure’ Hadza (that is,

those subsisting purely by hunting

and gathering) and those that lived

with the Isanzu and practiced some

cultivation.

The foraging Hadza exploited the

same foods using many of the same

techniques they do today, though

game was more plentiful because

farmers had not yet begun directly

encroaching on their lands. Some

early reports describe the Hadza as

having chiefs or big men but they

were probably mistaken; more reliable

accounts portray early 20th century

Hadza as, as they are today. They also

lived in similarly sized camps, used the

same tools, built houses in the same

style and had similar religious beliefs.

The British colonial government tried

to make the Hadza to settle down and

adopt farming in 1927, the first of

many government attempts to settle

them. The British tried again in 1939,

as did the independent Tanzanian

government in 1965 and 1990, and

various foreign groups since the

1960s. Although many attempts were

forceful, they by and large failed;

generally the Hadza willingly settle

and took advantage of provided food,

but they left and return to foraging

when the food runs out; few have

adopted farming. Another problem is

disease – because their communities

are sparse and isolated, few Hadza are

immune to common such as which

thrive in sedentary communities, and

several settlement attempts ended

with outbreaks of illness resulting too

many deaths, particularly of those were

children.

Of the four villages built for the Hadza

since 1965, two (Yaeda Chini and

Munguli) are now inhabited by the

Isanzu, Iraqw and Datoga. Another,

Mongo wa Mono, established in

1988, is sporadically occupied by

Hadza groups who stay there for a

few months at a time, either farming,

foraging or taking advantage of food

given to them by missionaries. At the

fourth village, Endamagha (also known

as Mwonyembe), the school is attended

by Hadza children, but they account for

just a third of the students there.

Numerous attempts to convert the

Hadza to Christianity have also been

largely unsuccessful. Tanzanian farmers

began moving into the Mangola area

to grow onions in the 1940s, but came

in small numbers until the 1960s. The

first German plantation in Hadzaland

was established in 1928, and later three

European families have settled in the

area. Since the 1960s, the Hadza have

been visited regularly by and other

researchers.

Archaeology and genetic history:

The Hadza are not closely related to

any other people. The Hadza language

was once classified with the Khoisan

languages because it has consonant,

but there is no real evidence they are

related, and Hadza is now usually

considered isolate. Genetically, the

Hadza do not appear to be particularly

closely related to other Khoisan-

language-speakers: even the Sandawe,

who live just 150 km away, diverged

from the Hadza more than 15,000

years ago. Genetic testing also suggests

significant admixture has occurred

between the Hadza and Bantu, Nilotic,

and Cushitic-speaking populations in

the last few thousand years. Today,

a few Hadza women marry into

neighboring groups such as the Bantu

Isanzu and the Nilotic Datoga, but

these marriages often fail and the

woman and her children return to the

Hadza. In previous decades, rape or

capture of Hadza women by outsiders

seems to have been common. The

reverse situation (Hadza men marrying

non-Hadza women) is very rare today,

probably because their neighbors

view the Hadza as having low status,

although during a famine in 1918-

20 some Hadza men are reported as

taking Isanzu wives.

The Hadza’s ancestors have probably

lived in their current territory for

a very long time. Hadzaland is just

50 km from Olduvai Gorge an area

sometimes called the “Cradle of

Mankind” because of the number of

Hominina fossils found there, and 40

km from the prehistoric site of Laetoli.

Archaeological evidence suggests

that the area has been continuously

occupied by hunter gatherers much like

the Hadza since at least the beginning

In the late 19th century European powers claimed much of the African continent as colonies, a period

known as the “Scramble for Africa”.

of the Later Stone Age, 50,000 years

ago. Although the Hadza do not make

Rock art today, they consider several

rock art sites within their territory,

probably at least 2,000 years old, to

have been created by their ancestors,

and their Oral tradition does not

suggest they moved to Hadzaland from

elsewhere.

mYTHS OF THE HADZA:There are some mythological figures

that are believed to take part in

arranging the world, for example

rolling the sky and the earth like two

sheets of leather and swapping their

order to achieve the recent situation

– in the past the sky used to locate

under the earth. These figures also

have made crucial decisions about the

animals and humans (designating their

food, environment), giving people the

fire and the capability of sitting. These

figures have celestial connotations:

Ishoko is a solar figure, Haine is a lunar

figure.

ISHOKO (“SUN”): The character “Ishoye” seems to be

Ishoko. She is depicted in some tales

as someone who created animals,

even people. Her creatures included

also some people who later turned

out to be a disaster for their fellow

people (the man-eating giant and his

wife): as Ishoko saw this, she killed the

man-eaters: “you are not people any

longer”.

Uttering Ishoko’s name can mean a

greeting, a good wish to someone for

a successful hunt.

Ishoko is the wife of Haine.

ROLES OF A CULTURE HERO: The man who returned from death

Indaya, the man who went to the

Isanzu territory after his death and

returned, plays the role of Culture

hero: he introduces customs and goods

to the Hadza.

ISANZU PEOPLE: The Isanzu people neighbor the

Hadza. Unlike the Iraqw people and

the cattle-raiding Maasai people (who

used to lead raids towards Isanzu and

Iramba through Hadza territory), the

Hoe-farming Isanzu are regarded as a

peaceful people by Hadza. Moreover,

many goods and customs came from

them, and the Hadza myths mention

and depict this benevolent influence

of the Isanzu. This advantageous view

about Isanzu makes the role of this

people comparable to that of a culture

hero in Hadza folklore.

STORIES ABOUT GIANTS:The stories about giants describe

people with superhuman strength

and size, but otherwise with human

weaknesses (they have human needs,

eat and drink; they can be poisoned,

cheated).

!HONGONGOSCHá: Another giant, “!Hongongoschá”,

played the role of a mythological

figure. He did not bother the Hadza

(except for some smaller thefts done

secretly at night). His nourishment

was flowers of trees (and stolen

vegetables). People greeted him with

great respect, and the giant wished

them good hunting luck, which was

indeed realized. The giant provided

further his good will to people even

after he was hurt deliberately by a

boy, but he took a fatal revenge on

the boy. Finally, the god Haine decided

about the fate of this giant and the

people: he warned people, revealed

the malevolent deed of the boy, and

changed the giant into a big white

clam

“There are some mythological figures that are believed to

take part in arranging the world.

For Poker players and fans the world over, there is no larger Poker Tournament than the world Series of Poker

(wSOP). more of that in a moment... we have our own Poker Tournaments right here in DAR, at the fabulous

Sea Cliff Casino.

““Dreams are dealt each year at the world Series of Poker,” said Ty Stewart, executive director of the wSOP.

SEA CLIFF CASINO POKER

The recent tournament at Sea Cliff

Casino ending 26 May 2013 was played

over 3 days with 32 Poker Players from

DAR participating.

The grand winners split the pot and

walked off with a shared, whopping

Tsh17 Million from a prize pool of

Tsh50 Million - a good number of

overall winners.

The format played was Texas Hold’em,

a serious one, yet with loads of fun.

The final table started off tentatively

and within the first few hands

already ‘all in!’ was called. Things

heated up even more with to-and-from

between 3 final players, ending with

a split-pot prize. We will keep you

informed every month on the best of

DAR’s Poker action, only at the leading

live Poker venue of choice - Sea Cliff

Casino.

Now, talking about the WSOP, what

does it include? Well, at this exact

moment, a Tanzanian team of Poker

Players are currently in Las Vegas, and

upon their return we will have an

exclusive interview.

There may not be a $1 million buy-in

event this year, but the 2013 WSOP

schedule looks more promising than

ever. Players from all over the world

will flood the Rio All-Suite Hotel and

Casino in Las Vegas from May 29 to

July 15, with 62 events offering players

around the world a chance to

become an instant icon of the game.

The WSOP main event will take place

from July 6 until July 15 when the

final table of nine will be assembled.

There will be three starting days

and three Day 2s before the field

comes together on July 11 for Day 3.

The November Nine format will return

with the final table scheduled for Nov.

4-5. If you have ESPN, watch the finals

live!

Event 6 is dubbed the “Millionaire

Maker” as the winner of this $1,500

single re-entry event will earn

$1,000,000. “The prize pool will be

altered from standard WSOP events to

ensure this first place payout,” the

WSOP said in a press release.

“Dreams are dealt each year at the

World Series of Poker,” said Ty Stewart,

executive director of the WSOP. “From

the opening weekend, where we will

make yet another millionaire, to the

main event, which awards the largest

single prize in the world, the WSOP

is an annual affirmation about the

strength and global appeal of the

game.”

There will be a focus on no-limit

events, especially on weekends. Each

weekend in June will offer a $1,500

and $1,000 buy-in no-limit hold ‘em

event.

The WSOP will hold its first turbo event

on June 19, where blinds will

increase at 30-minute intervals during

the first four levels, 40-minute

intervals for levels 5 to 17, and the

WSOP-standard 60-minute intervals

beyond that. The $1,000 buy-in event is

scheduled for two days.

“Bring your bankroll, whatever it is,

and come have the time of your

life,” said WSOP tournament director

Jack Effel, who will oversee the

tournament for the eighth consecutive

year. “We think this is the most

diverse schedule we’ve ever had and

we’ll be ready for an all-time

turn-out at the 44th annual WSOP.”

For those with massive bankrolls, the

WSOP is offering a $111,111 buy-in

High Roller bracelet event on June 26

where the customary 3 percent house

fees that typically go to the casino will

be donated to the charity ONE

DROP. There will also be a $1,111 buy-

in “Little One For One Drop” on July

3, with $111 of that going to ONE

DROP.

And let’s not forget about the ladies.

The buy-in is listed as $10,000,

but ladies will receive a substantial

discount and be able to enter the

event for only $1,000.

Besides the High Roller, the $50,000

Poker Players’ Championship and

$25,000 six-handed no-limit hold ‘em

events are the most expensive on the

schedule. After seeing strong turnouts

last year, the Mixed-Max, ante-only

and four-handed events will returning

2013 as well.

In addition to the 62 bracelet events,

an Open Face Chinese event ($5,000

buy-in) and Bracelet Bounty event

($560 buy-in) will be played in Vegas as

non-bracelet events. The WSOP is also

holding three non-bracelet “Deep

Stack” events a day with buy-ins of

$135, $185 and $235.

So, with so many options and different

Games to enter, are we going to see

a Tanzanian winner?

Good luck!

PARROT

One day a man goes to a pet shop to

buy a parrot. The assistant takes the

man to the parrot section and asks

the man to choose one. The man asks,

‘’How much is the yellow one?’’

The assistant says, ‘’$2000.’’ The man

is shocked and asks the assistant why

it’s so expensive. The assistant explains,

‘’This parrot is a very special one. He

knows typewriting and can type really

fast.’’

‘’What about the green one?’’ the man

asks.

The assistant says, ‘’He costs $5000

because he knows typewriting and can

answer incoming telephone calls and

takes notes.’’

‘’What about the red one?’’ the man

asks.

The assistant says, ‘’That one’s

$10,000.’’

The man says, ‘’What does HE do?’’

The assistant says, ‘’I don’t know, but

the other two call him boss.’’

PHONE LINE

A young businessman had just started

his own firm. He had just rented a

beautiful office and had it furnished

with antiques.

He saw a man come into the outer

office. Wishing to appear the hot shot,

the businessman picked up the phone

and started to pretend he had a big

deal working. He threw huge figures

around and made giant commitments.

Finally he hung up and asked the

visitor, “Can I help you?”

“Yeah, I’ve come to activate your

phone lines.”

HILARIOUS SIGNS

On a plumber’s truck: “We repair what

your husband fixed.”

Pizza shop slogan: “7 days without

pizza makes one weak.”

Outside a muffler shop: “No

appointment necessary. We hear you

coming.”

In a veterinarian’s waiting room: “Be

back in 5 minutes. Sit! Stay!”

Door of a plastic surgeon’s office: “We

can help you pick your nose!”

On an electrician’s truck: “Let us

remove your shorts.”

In a non-smoking area: “If we see

smoke, we will assume you are on fire

and take appropriate action.”

On a maternity room door: “Push.

Push. Push.”

At an optometrist’s office: “If you don’t

see what you’re looking for,

you’ve come to the right place.”

In the front yard of a funeral home:

“Drive carefully. We’ll wait.”

The joke’s on us. Seriously.

CASINO myths 2In the previous issue we noted Casino myths. This is the 2nd part of 2sponsored by Sea Cliff Casino.

myth : Playing in casinos is intimidating.Fact : Once you learn how to play and

play more, you will feel at ease.

Ask the casino manager to assist you

with some training on Slots & Tables,

for your enjoyment. Also remember

that there are many books and on-line

notes to teach you the rules of the

various games.

myth : Dealers can land a Roulette ball on a specific number.Fact : There are so many factors in the

game of Roulette that the outcome

is totally random. The ball travels at a

different speed each time. There

is the angle of the slope which differs

everytime the ball falls into the

wheel. All of this ensures that the

outcome is random.

myth : Blackjack dealers controls the deck of handsFact : Dealers are trained according to

rules and ethics of casinos - and

always act to offer fairness. Cards are

drawn as per strict rules which

are known to all players too. The only

thing that can affect an outcome of

this game is the decision made by the

player.

myth : Dealers are paid to make players loseFact : Dealers are paid a salary

whatever the outcome of the game

is. Infact, the only way a dealer earns

more is when the player is winning -

the more a player wins, most probably

the higher the tip the dealer receives!

myth : Playing cards are markedFact : All cards are stored under very

strict secure conditions. Cards are

checked and re-checked at all security

points. Cards are placed in

‘plastic shoes’ that are covered so no-

one can tell what card number is

sitting where. And, only the dealer is

If the tip of your shoelace becomes

frayed, simply snip the tip off, paint

over with clear nail polish and leave to

dry. Perfect!

If you have weeds growing between

your paving, make a solution of 1/4 cup

of salt added to 1 litre of water, and

spray directly.

To remove all smells and odd orders,

place a bowl of white vinegar in the

affected room to absorb these smells.

If you have granite in your home or

office, and it gets stained, use 1/2

lemon with a bit of table salt and rub

gently on the stain. Then rinse of with

plain water.

So your new shoes are quite tight...

place your blow dryer on warm, insert

onto the toe of the shoe and when all

is warm, place socks or newspaper in a

ball in the shoe to stretch them.

Natural mosquito repellants :

- rub Vicks Vapour Rub onto your arms

and legs

- splash some plain rubbing alcohol on

your arms and legs

- dab lavender oil on your pulse points.

Smells great and keeps mosquitos at bay

Before you wear a new garment, put

a little clear nail polish on the front

and back of each button. Buttons will

stay on longer when their threads are

sealed.

Zippers won’t stick if you rub them

with the edge of a bar of soap.

To remove a hem crease, sponge the

material with white vinegar and press

with a warm iron.

Nail polish remover removes tar and

grease from white leather shoes.

White shoe polish will apply more

evenly if you rub the shoes with a raw

potato or rubbing alcohol before

polishing.

White shoe polish won’t smear if you

spray the shoe with hair spray after

it is dry.

Vinegar and water will remove salt

stains from shoes and boots.

New white canvas shoes will stay that

way if you spray them heavily with

starch.

For longer lasting pantyhose, try

freezing them before you wear them.

Just

wet, wring out and toss in a plastic bag

to freeze. Thaw and hang to dry.

Perk up soggy lettuce by soaking in

cold water with some lemon juice. To

store place in a zip lock bag with paper

towel to absorb moisture.

Never, never pour water on flaming fat

or oil you’ll spread the fire. If the fire’s

inside a pan, slap on the lid. If outside,

turn off the heat

and douse the flames by tossing on a

handful of baking soda or salt.

Wax paper is endlessly useful. Use it:

To catch grated cheese, to place under

seasoned flour for breading or spices

for blackening, to tear into strips to slip

under a cake you are icing, to cover a

dish you are microwaving.

It’s a regional economic powerhouse

with clusters of high-rise buildings,

traffic jams, new international hotels

Despite its busy and chaotic

atmosphere, DAR never feels too dense

or overpopulated.

DAR is ‘liquid’...it is difficult to figure

out where the city begins and ends.

Weather-beaten dhows remain as a

clue that, some 150 years ago, DAR

“This event took place at the Golden Tulip Hotel, where over 500 consumers were treated to a premium night out and had the chance to watch the UEFA championship league finals on a big screen.

tournament was engaging and unique.

The opportunity to team up with

not only different but allowed us to

enjoy the Heineken brand. We have

This event took place at the Golden

Where did Foosball come from? Who

was the genius behind it all?

Although patents for similar games

may exist from as far back as the

1890s, the game of Table Football as

we know it today was first invented

by Harold Searles Thornton in 1921

and patented in 1923. The concept

was conceived after Harold had been

to a Tottenham Hotspur F.C football

match (he was an avid supporter).

He wanted to provide a game that

replicated football that could be

played at home. The inspiration came

from a box of matches: by laying the

matches across the box he had formed

the basis of his game. This inspired the

USA to be patent but it then expired

shortly after. In 2002 the International

Table Soccer Federation (ITSF) was

established in France with the mission

of promoting the sport of Table

Soccer as an organizing sports body,

regulating international competitions,

and establishing the game with the

International Olympic Committee

(IOC) and General Association of

International Sport Federation (GAISF).

THE UEFA CHAmPIONSHIP LEAGUE FINALS:

This was the first time in the history of

the Champions League (and European

Cup) that the final was contested

between two German sides. There

were three previous Champions League

finals between two clubs from the

same country: 2000 (Spain) 2003 (Italy),

and 2008 (England).

It was Bayern Munich’s 10th European

Cup final, trailing only Real Madrid (12)

and Milan (11). They won four of those

finals: in 1974, 1975, 1976 and most

recently 2001. This is also their third

final in four years; they lost in both

2010 and 2012, adding to previous final

losses in 1982, 1987 and 1999.

For Dortmund, this was their second

Champions League final, with them

winning their first title 1997. The next

season as defending champions, they

defeated Bayern in their only previous

meetings in European competitions,

winning 1–0 on aggregate in the

1997–98 UEFA Champions League

quarter-finals.

The 2013 UEFA Champions League

Final was the final match of2012–13

UEFA Champions League, the 58th

season of Europe’s premier club

football tournament organized by

UEFA and the 21st season since it was

renamed from the European Champion

Clubs’ Cup to UEFA Champions League

The match took place on Saturday,

25 May 2013, at Wembley Stadium in

London, England, between German

Bundesliga clubs Borussia Dortmund

and Bayern Munich In the first all-

German Champions League final,

Bayern won the match 2–1 with goals

from Mario Mandžukić and man of the

match Arjen Robben coming either

side of an ćlkay Gündoćan penalty for

Dortmund.

As a result of their victory, Bayern

qualified to play against Chelsea, the

winners of the 2012–13 UEFA Europa

League, in the 2013 UEFA Super Cup,

and also earned the right to enter the

semi-finals of the 2013 FIFA Club World

Cup as the UEFA representative.

Dortmund were the dominant team in

the first half-hour of the match, with

intense pressing towards Bayern. Neuer

made five important saves in the first

35 minutes, including two off shots

from Lewandowski and one from Reus.

Bayern later took the initiative, with

two saves from Weidenfeller against

Robben. They first scored in the 60th

minute, when Mandžukić finished the

combination of passes by Robben and

Ribéry. Shortly after, Dante raised his

foot in the penalty area and caught

Reus in the stomach; Gündoćan scored

the resulting penalty. Robben scored

the winning goal after a pass from

Ribéry with a minute left in normal

time.

This was a brilliant game. The losing

team’s fans were devastated but the

winning team fans screamed in joy and

showered the media with Heineken.

We simply cannot wait till the next

event!

mix it up!It’S tIME tO

Sitting in awe as bottles are flying and fire is swirling, mikey wilkins is definitely a captivating man to watch. This young 26 year old, hailing from Yeovil - a small town in England, is bringing his talented bar-tending skills to DAR.

I’ve taken this opportunity to pull him out of his comfort

zone and have someone serve him a drink instead! This

vibrant and energetic man is no different when sitting on

the other side of the bar. Full of life and with a heart of

gold…there was more to him than I first anticipated.

Starting out at the age of 13 cleaning plates in a local pub,

an opportunity arose when a waiter didn’t show up for

work. He was put in a giant white shirt and straight onto

the floor. This helped with what are now his exceptional

people skills. Nothing is more rewarding than brightening

up someone’s day, and that is exactly what he’s good at.

“The most important question you can ask as a bartender

is ‘why?’.” If someone walks in and sits at the bar with

their arms folded, looking down in the dumps and they

can leave with a smile on their face, that is what makes it

all worth it.

As Bar manager in Bar Rouge, Shanghai, China, mikey

made his mark working alongside top mixologists and

chefs. By introducing a cost control working platform and

through different control procedures it enabled the bar

to work out where it was losing money unnecessarily,

he was able to save the bar over half a million dollars a

year. working in an environment where English is hard to

come by, you learn to overcome the language barrier quite

quickly. As Bar Rouge is an international bar, bartenders

were decent with the English language, so while I

wouldn’t put his mandarin to the test, his cheeky English

accent is sure to put a smile on your face. mikey says it’s

tough but you learn to adapt to the challenge as western

management techniques don’t work over there. Shanghai

is fast paced, with competition everywhere. Everyone is

trying to prove something.

Extensively travelled, knowledgeable,

and well spoken, mikey is on a mission

to get people out of what he calls TIA

(This Is Africa) mentality. Liquid Gold

is how he plans on doing this. This

exciting yet nerve-wracking venture

aims to train bartenders to take more

pride in what they do and to build

confidence and share knowledge

with a “7 steps to creating the perfect

serve” programme. As Tanzania

grows, develops and attracts a more

international crowd, we’ll find it’s

important to show that they can get

the standards they expect everywhere

else in the world.

So what drives this charismatic chap?

It’s the sacrifices that are made, the

mistakes, and the aim to be good at

what he does. The appreciation from

people – “without the people I would

have given up a long time ago.” “The

best tip I have ever been given was a

werther’s Original sweet. He may not

have been able to afford to tip but he

made an effort anyway. He showed his

appreciation.”

“It’s more than a drink. It’s an

experience. That’s what is important.

If I remind you of a time or a place. A

love. A journey. whatever it reminds

you of. The aroma…it’s more than

what you taste. The whole thing is an

experience.”

• Brown Sugar

• Bourbon

• Spritz with orange zest

• Garnish with a cherry

mETHOD:Take a rocks glass, otherwise known as

an old fashioned glass, place a tissue

over the glass and place a sugar cube

on the tissue. Drop a few drops of

Angostura Bitters on the cube until it

is saturated. Add this cube of sugar

to the glass. muddle (crush) the sugar

cube and add an ice cube. Over this ice

cube introduce a small amount of the

bourbon (mikey says he likes to use

Four Roses). Take a bar spoon and stir

the cube to start dilution. Add more

bourbon and more ice and continue

to stir. Continue the process until you

introduce about 60ml (20z). when this

is complete fill the glass with ice. Take

an orange and cut a piece of the peel

(zest). This is where all the oils and

fragrance are stored. Take the peel and

spritz the rim of the glass and ice with

the oils. Add the orange peel and a

cherry as garnish.

“Top mixologist Sebastien-Bonnefoi

told me that a good Old Fashioned

thE SICKLE CELL cycle challengeOn may 15th 2013, The Sickle Cell Foundation of Tanzania hosted the first ever Cycle Challenge for Sickle Cell Disease, held at the Sea Cliff Hotel in Dar es Salaam.

More than 120 people attended,

including 34 cycling ‘challengers’,

divided into 6 teams, their fans and

friends of the Foundation. The teams,

which included Team Sanvik, Team BG

Tanzania, Team Nabaki Africa, Team

CFAO Motors, Team Baiskieli and the

Morning cuclists Team, competed in

various cycling ‘challenges’ to raise

money for the Sickle Cell Foundation

of Tanzania.. The Morning Cyclists won

the obstacle course race; Team Baisikeli

won the egg and spoon race; and CFAO

Motors flexed their muscles to win the

slowest man to the finish line race.

Nobody was able to master the reverse

steering bike.

Before the entertainment and the

competitions began, the audience

was welcomed by the Chairperson of

the foundation, Ms. Grace Rubambey

and by the Political Counsellor of the

Canadian High Commission, Dr. Carol

McQueen. Alan Knight, a Dar resident

who has just finished the 12,000km

bicycle race from Cairo to Cape to raise

funds for the Sickle Cell Foundation of

Tanzania also welcomed the everyone

encouraged them to generously support

the Foundation. Dr. McQueen from the

Canadian High Commission in Tanzania

emphasized the fact that Sickle

Cell Disease has a solution and that

donations will go a long way towards

making that solution available.

The star of the night was Alan Knight;

an experienced long distance cyclist and

the main driver behind the ongoing

Cycle for Sickle Cell fundraising efforts.

Dr. Knight has just completed the

incredible four month bicycle race from

Cairo to Cape Town. Along his journey,

he continuously raised awareness for

the need to build a day care centre

for sickle cell patients in Tanzania. His

emotional tale of broken bikes and

bones moved the audience and brought

tears to his eyes. He cycled 11,718

Kilometres up and down hills, through

desserts & river beds, on roads and dirt

trails: an incredible feat for any person,

and no less so for a man of 60!

To top off the amazing evening of

generosity, the Tsh 10,000 raffle ticket

winners were announced. Prizes won

included helicopter flights, weekend

breaks at Sea Cliff Hotel and an Akemi

dinner voucher.

DJPA Partnership joined forces with

Archipelago Productions to contributing

their time & expertise in designing,

producing & organizing this successful

event.

The evening was closed with an

announcement that the total money

raised from raffle ticket sales, bets

placed on teams and pledges was Tsh

4,797,000 in cash and a further Tsh

5,800,000 pledges.

The Cycle Challenge was a high point of

the Cycle for Sickle Cell Campaign that

began in late 2012, as Alan prepared

for the race. To date, the campaign has

raised Tsh 38.5 million - over half of

the targeted amount of Tsh 75 million

needed to establish the Sickle Cell

Centre for excellence.

wolf’s clothingA WOLF IN

It’s high, wide and imposing, with the squared off lines giving the body a very tough look. One look at the Amarok and you will notice Volkswagen were looking

at combining luxury pickup with the ultimate work horse.

“Amarok means wOLF. The name was carefully selected becausewolf or mbweha in Swahili symbolizes ultimate strength and endurance.

Volkswagen has been manufacturing

utility vehicles for 27 years, but the

launch of the Amarok is especially

significant since it is its first double cabin

pickup. In the Inuit language of the

Eskimo people, Amarok means WOLF.

The name was carefully selected because

wolf or mbweha in Swahili symbolizes

ultimate strength and endurance.

The Amarok is sold only as a double-cab

five-seater right now. A single-cab

model will follow later and it stands out

with its high-grade materials and solid

build quality. As the styling suggests,

this car is virtually unstoppable away

from the beaten track. They come in

two options. The Highline which is 2.0Ltr

BiTurbo Diesel Engine or a Trendline

2.0Ltr Turbo Diesel Engine.

They also come in rear wheel and 4WD.

All feature four-wheel drive, to ensure

the car can take the roughest terrain

in its stride. One might think that the

massive dimensions will make parking a

challenge, but once you’ve get used to

the vehicle from behind the wheel, the

Amarok is a great deal of fun.

The interior of the Amarok is a good

balance of classy and practical yet

still manages to look standard. The

interior is very clean, but still manages

to add a slight touch of premium in

the trim and equipment departments,

with intuitive controls from big chunky

buttons. There are plenty of storage

spaces around the cabin, including

underseat bins and massive door

pockets. There’s also enough space

between the shifter and centre console

bin for placing a small laptop.

You have to applaud three 12v outlets

in cabin and another in the load bin,

plus a bright light back there, so no

more fumbling around in the dark.

Leather Interior and seating makes the

Amarok enjoyable to drive whether you

are cruising in Oysterbay or serious off-

roading at Pugu Hills.

Driving a five-metre-long pick-up takes

some getting used to and parking the

Amarok is a real challenge. Visibility is

great though, and all the switches

on the dashboard work with precision.

But while the diesel engine has decent

low-down torque for strong off-road

ability, the two-tonne plus kerbweight

hampers acceleration off the line.

Overall this is a solid blend of a tough

workhorse and some creature

comforts that make working life so

much more bearable.

HISTORY:The idea of a Goat Racing event was

brought here from Uganda, where in

1993, some members of the business

community came up with this novel

way of raising money for charity. They

introduced the Goat Races modeled

(vaguely) on the UK Royal Ascot horse

races, except with a rather more

practical beastie for East Africa - the

racing goat.

ABOUT THE GOAT RACES:The Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races

main aim and objective is to raise

funds for charities in Tanzania and at

the same time the Goat Races hope

to create a wider awareness in the

community that there are those less

fortunate than themselves who need

our support.

The races bring the community

together for a fun, family day out.

We are very grateful to have the

support of so many grand Sponsors and

guests without the support from the

sponsor and the fantastic communities

of Tanzania (and some who travel from

far afield to take part in the day), the

Goat Races would not be the success it

is today and we would not be able to

achieve our goals.

THE AIm FOR GOAT RACES:‘The most important part of the Goat

Races is raising money to support small

local organizations and charities that

will use the funds to make a significant

and sustainable impact on their work,

benefiting the wider community within

which they are based. We would like

to thank everybody, from our generous

sponsors, to all the people who have

“owned” a goat, taken part in the

raffle and betting or just turned up

on the day and had a great time, for

their contribution in making such a

big difference to the lives of so many

Tanzanians.

The Goat Races were first introduced to Tanzania in 2001 and since then we have raised over 600 million Tanzanian Shillings for various charities.

3. Bibi Jann’s Center; Goat Races

funding will go towards ensuring the

centre can meet its school costs and

to purchase two computers so the

children can learn valuable ICT skills.

4. Fahari; This year the Goat Races is

supporting the training of 10 disabled

women.

5. CCBRT; This year the Goat Races will

Living in Dar we have constant heat and exposure to sun. This can be very damaging to our skin. It’s extremely

important to cover up with an SPF 30+ sunscreen that will protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Always

wear a sunscreen, even underneath your foundation!

“Your eyebrows frame your face. It’s important to keep them properly groomed, and we recommend seeing a professional to help you find your perfect natural shape.

GROOmED TO PERFECTION

Try not to wear a heavy foundation

during the day. It’s important to let

your skin breathe. If you feel like you

need some coverage, opt for a tinted

moisturiser instead. Remember SPF!

When applying concealer to conceal

imperfections, apply it after your

foundation. You may find that your

foundation has covered the majority of

your problem areas, and you’ll use less

of your product to cover what can still

be seen.

Your eyebrows frame your face. It’s

important to keep them properly

groomed, and we recommend seeing

a professional to help you find your

perfect natural shape. Fuller brows

give you a more youthful appearance

but can be a hassle to maintain. If you

have a clear mascara, brush through

your brows to put them into place

and help them stay there! If you don’t

have any clear mascara on hand, spray

a little hairspray on an old toothbrush

and brush into place. This should keep

your brows neatly in place throughout

the day.

Long day at work and suddenly you’ve

been called for an event or girls night

out? How do you take your daytime

and make it your night time? Keep a

dramatic lipstick in your bag and apply

when you’re ready to go.

Can’t find your blush and you’re

running out of time? Dab a bit of

lipstick onto your cheeks and blend

away.

It’s easier to prevent signs of aging

than it is to reverse them. For you

younger ladies, start now! Proper skin

care routines are vital (at any age).

Cleanse, tone, eye treatments, serums,

moisturisers and SPF are all necessary.

Use a gentle exfoliator one or twice a

week to remove dead skin.

Quick and easy hair mask? Yes please!

1. Halve an avocado, remove the seed

and spoon the whole thing into a

blender bowl.

2. Add roughly ¼ of a teaspoon of

Vitamin E oil.

3. Add 1 teaspoon of olive oil

4. Blend until it reaches a creamy or

“whipped” consistency

To apply this, simply cover all of

your hair and then cover with plastic

wrap. Let it sit for 10-20 minutes then

shampoo and condition your hair as

usual.

When applying foundation, use

downward strokes, not upward strokes.

This will prevent the small hairs on

your face becoming more noticeable.

Perfect colour blush for your skin tone?

Porcelain Skin: Apricot shades.

Ivory Skin: Pale pink shades.

Beige Skin: Amber shades.

Olive - Tawny Skin: Rose shades.

Almond Skin: Fuschia shades.

Ebony Skin: Tangerine shades.

Dry and cracked lips ruin how

your lipstick looks and applies.

Unfortunately with harsh impurities in

our air, sun damage, and just general

things in life, we’re all victims at one

point or another. To help maintain tip

top kissable lips, every time you brush

your teeth in the morning apply a

generous amount of a thick, healing

lip balm and gently exfoliate your lips

with a soft toothbrush and wipe off.

Apply a normal lip balm and you’re

good to go.

oceansCONSERvING OUR LIvING

Tanzania is home to an outstanding array of marine habitats which serve as important feeding grounds for several threatened marine species including sea turtles, dugongs, whale sharks, together with several species of whale and dolphin.

Coral reefs and seagrass beds are also central to the lives

of coastal fishing communities, providing a source of

income and food security for millions of people. However,

due to a growing human population in the coastal zone,

some marine species are facing an uncertain future. Sea

turtles and dugongs are under increasing pressure from

incidental bycatch in fishing nets and deliberate slaughter

for their meat while illegal and destructive fishing practices

are causing the degradation of important breeding and

foraging habitats.

Alarming declines in populations of sea turtles and

dugongs led to the establishment of Sea Sense in 2001, an

organisation entirely dedicated to the conservation and

protection of coastal and marine resources in Tanzania.

Over the past twelve years, Sea Sense has targeted the

conservation of species such as sea turtles, dugongs and

whale sharks to achieve broader marine conservation

goals, since these species are widely regarded as indicators

of the health of our oceans. Sea Sense uses a ‘grassroots’

approach, engaging coastal communities in a range of

marine conservation initiatives and providing education

and training programmes in marine resource management.

Each of the programmes is specifically designed to deliver

conservation benefits for threatened marine species and

socio-economic benefits for coastal communities, in order

to emphasize the fundamental link between humans and

their environment.

Conservation and protection of

endangered sea turtles is Sea Sense’s

‘flagship’ project. Of the seven sea

turtle species worldwide, five occur off

the coast of Tanzania (green, hawksbill,

loggerhead, leatherback and olive

ridley). Every year, female green and

hawksbill turtles migrate thousands of

kilometres through the world’s oceans

in search of their nesting grounds on

Tanzania’s white sandy beaches. This

exhausting journey is undertaken with

one purpose in mind: to lay their eggs

on the very same beach on which they

themselves were born. When the tiny

hatchlings emerge from their eggs and

make their first perilous journey to

the sea, they are constantly absorbing

environmental information, a process

known as ‘magnetic imprinting’.

This information will enable them

to relocate the same beach 30 years

later when they finally reach breeding

age and is one of the most impressive

homing mechanisms in the animal

kingdom.

It is the survival of these tiny hatchlings

that is the focus of a community

based nest monitoring and protection

programme established by Sea Sense.

Community Conservation Officers

conduct daily foot patrols of nesting

beaches to search for evidence of

sea turtle nesting. Each nest is given

an individual identification number

and is monitored throughout the

two month incubation period. Any

nest at risk of poaching by villagers,

predation by wild animals or tidal

inundation is relocated to a safer area.

By maximising the chances of hatchling

survival, the programme is helping

to produce the next generation of

sea turtles. Since 2001, Sea Sense

Conservation Officers have monitored

and protected more than 6,000 nests

and over 261,000 sea turtle hatchlings

have safely reached the sea to begin

their long journey to adulthood.

Sadly, only one in a thousand

hatchlings will reach adulthood and as

a result, many sea turtle populations

around the world are at risk of

extinction. If sea turtles become

extinct, there are serious implications

for humans because sea turtles play an

important part in nutrient recycling.

Nutrient recycling keeps oceanic

waters productive, thereby supporting

healthy fish populations that we as

human beings rely on as an important

source of protein. It would also be a

devastating loss of biodiversity for our

planet. Sea turtles are ancient marine

reptiles that first appeared on earth

over 200 million years ago. That’s 50

million years before the first dinosaurs!

These ancient marine reptiles have

long fascinated people and figured

prominently in mythology and folklore

of many cultures. They are regarded

as a symbol of fertility, wisdom and

longevity. Do you need any more

reasons to love sea turtles?!

“Conservation and protection of endangered sea turtles is Sea Sense’s ‘flagship’ project.

We all have different tastes, and when

coffee is the topic in question, this

becomes even more the case. Every

country you go to around the world

you’ll possibly have noticed how

different characteristics in the coffee

they consume will change from one

person to another. Some like it strong,

others prefer mild.

The blending process takes place while

the coffee is still raw, though some

coffee blenders prefer to do so after

the roasting process. The aroma and

flavour is captured after the roasting

process. Until that coffee bean is

roasted, it cannot unlock that flavour.

The roasting process is what unlocks

the flavour and aroma we all come to

relish.

There is an art and science to the

roasting process ; coffee beans cannot

simply be roasted and suddenly expect

the flavour to become unlocked, it has

to be roasted at a certain temperature .

and within a certain time frame.

Some blends are roasted longer and

without as much heat, others at higher

temperatures for shorter periods and

could use up-to six different varieties,

to get the right flavour

Coffea Arabica produces better coffee

grown coffee species, Coffea

The top 10OF EvERYthING!

In this, our 2nd issue, we thought it fair to bring you the Top 10 – of everything – to match our Number 1 spot at

the top of DAR’s monthly magazine pile. Just like us, these were seen as trailblazers, roaring to the top. So these are

what PRImE TImE DAR thinks are the Top 10.

“The Rolex Submariner is so popular that it’s one of the most counterfeited mens watches in the world today.

ROLEx SUBmARINER

mASTERPIECES

ICONIC LUxURY wATCHESRolex Submariner – Easily the

single most recognizable timepiece

still in production today, it’s one of

the most sought after choices on

the market. The Rolex Submariner is

so popular that it’s one of the most

counterfeited mens watches in the

world today. Known for its water

resistance, it was initially introduced

in 1954. It has been on a number

of famous expeditions, including

Flaherty’s Moana where it was

subjected to nearly one thousand dives

and Heyerdal’s Ra II in 1970. Perhaps

a good bit of its iconic status, though,

comes from the appearance of this one

in eleven different James Bond films

as well as countless appearances in

advertisements worldwide. Thousands

flock to this model each year, and

with good reason. The Mercedes

hand set and self-winding mechanism

are certainly features most buyers

appreciate, but many also sing the

praises of oyster foundation. Suitable

for all attires, it screams elegance and

sophistication at every turn.

Omega Seamaster –

Considered to be a highly respected

timepiece worldwide, the Omega

Seamaster has had a number of models

in production over the last several

years. The packaging itself offers a

look of classic elegance that helps you

immediately realize you’ve purchased

more than a simple watch – it’s an

iconic timepiece to be treasured for

generations. Combine that thought

with the sophisticated construction and

phenomenal diving features, and it’s

a model many trust. Divers who enjoy

its 300 meter depth rating and helium

escape valve like the functionality

while business people tend to enjoy

its distinctive look. The easy-to-turn

bezel with oversized markers only

adds to the appeal of this mens watch.

The bracelet is a fairly big draw for

many buyers as well as it’s the ideal

combination of both function and

comfort. With included visibility and

legibility whether you’re glancing at

it in full or low light conditions, it’s a

special icon many buyers don’t want to

miss.

Tag Heuer Aquaracer – The

Tag Heuer Aquaracer is backed by a

company that has been on the cusp of

both style and reliable products since

1860 when it was initially founded.

During the last several decades, their

emphasis on precision meant that

world-renowned sports competitions

like the FIS Ski World Cup, the Formula

1 Championships and even the Olympic

Games turned to the company for help

with timing. Because of this sports

association, celebrities and enthusiasts

everywhere look to the brand for

continually reliable yet stylish models

like the Aquaracer. With a beautiful

bracelet, elegant dial, and water

resistance of up to 500 meters, it’s a

great selection for any attire or dive.

Given that this company was the one

who patented the idea of a water

resistant case before the turn of the

twentieth century, its iconic status is

reliant upon the very real quality it

presents for those who need a mens

watch like this on a professional diving

level.

Breitling Navitimer - Since

the 1940’s when some of the world’s

most famous pilots were seen wearing

one of these, this line has become

the archetypal pilot’s watch for

generations to come. Any pilot who

makes a list of iconic timepieces will

have this as number one, and as you

investigate the features even the

newest models in this line provide,

it’s not hard to see why. From the

first circular slide rule the company

added to the early Breitling Navitimer

models to the AOPA logo version of

the sixties and seventies, the company

has continually redesigned its models

to provide for a pilot’s needs. Now one

of the most desired mens watches on

the planet, the Navtimer has begun

to reemphasize its roots in the newer

models. While there are a number of

luxury features, like the gold casing or

the additions the QP model includes,

for most, the black dial with a now

iconic slide rule is enough for many

buyers.

movado Juro - Movado moved

the timepiece world from functional

to iconic with its black museum dial,

and the Movado Juro did little to

dispel that notion. Given that it has

thousands of admires on a worldwide

basis, its stainless steel casing, durable

sapphire window, and striking black

dial face with the twelve o’clock

marker only keep the legend alive.

Most of today’s models are water

resistant up to 99 feet and come with

either a leather or stainless steel strap.

Design, though, plays a huge history

in the brand’s status. Considered to

be the industry’s primary innovators,

they hold more patents and awards

than many of today’s top companies.

By redefining modernism with the first

museum dial piece, Movado continues

its tradition of taking center stage with

the introduction of the Juro. Elegance

and simplicity are often used to

describe this piece, but iconic certainly

fits as well.

Baume & mercier Classima

- A timepiece well known to executives

everywhere, the Baume & Mercier

Classima offers a kind of simple beauty

that is often unheard of in the industry

today. By focusing more on the stylistic

aspects of this line than the functions

that few users will ever both to make

use of, Baume & Mercier manage,

61PRIME TIME DAR60 PRIME TIME DAR

Page 32: PRIME TIME DAR Issue 2

again, to join form and function as

they have continually in their 175 year

history. A sobering piece even among

others that have made it to the iconic

status, each noticeable detail is almost

exquisite. Like many these days, it is

powered by a self-winding movement,

but that only further speaks to the

simple stylishness of this line. A modest

size by modern standards, it’s thinner

and lighter than many of today’s

other luxury models. While typical of

most from this brand in both quality

and aesthetics, it also offers a level of

perfection many of their lines simply

cannot achieve.

Rolex President - Often

as recognizable as this brand’s

Submariner, this is the ultimate status

symbol among those who own luxury

watches. Offered only in gold and

platinum, it’s the kind of icon even

its owners keep reserved for those

special occasions. A model that will

easily outlive any purchaser, the Rolex

President has the same durability as

anything from this brand, but most

of its owners are older given both

the symbolic nature of this one as

well as the attached price tag. Very

well respected among aficionados

throughout the world, it’s a heavier

model that has shifted little in

appearance since it was originally

introduced in the late nineteen-fifties.

It features a unique bracelet among

other Rolex models with an entirely

different shape and clasp mechanism.

It is unique features like these combine

with the quality everyone expects from

this brand that have helped to make

this model an icon among even today’s

discriminating buyers.

Patek Philippe Nautilus –

First introduced to the buying public

in the late nineteen-seventies, the

company considers this line a sports

dress timepiece. Most fans, however,

consider it to be the classic sports

timepiece that helped to define the

very notion of a steel sports watch.

With distinctive broad shoulders, the

Patek Philippe Nautilus was created

to look much like the porthole on any

ship, and because it’s one of the more

complicated lines this brand offers, it’s

also got a number of features unique

among most timepieces that are

considered icons. While often priced

as much as any gold timepiece on the

market, the movement alone is enough

to convince most enthusiasts that it

must be had at any price. Perhaps part

of the its original drive to icon status,

though, was the fact that only 1200

were initially released, but later models

have managed to keep the sales

numbers quite high.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak – One of the first high end sports

watches, the Audemars Piguet Royal

Oak follows the brand’s great history

of firsts. The initial goal with this line

was to recreate the idea of a classical

watch for the changing culture,

and with the octagonal face, steel

construction, and classic hexagonal

screws, it was an immediate hit as

soon as it was displayed. While it does

have a rugged look, the satin finish

helps to give it a formal feel to make

it ideal in any setting. These days, the

technical details of this timepiece get

more complex with every release, and

the variety of space-aged metals used

in production appeal to connoisseurs

and tech-savvy individuals alike. The

distinct face, however, is what proves

a draw for most buyers of these luxury

watches, and with new designs coming

out fairly regularly, it’s one icon that’s

not likely to disappear soon.

Oris Divers Titan – Divers

require specialized timepieces, and

while many of those have made

it to iconic status based on looks

alone, this line is clearly known for

its reliability in terms of function as

“while often priced as much as any gold timepiece on the market,

the movement alone is enough to convince most enthusiasts that it

must be had at any price.

NAUTILUS

well as its aesthetic appeal. Most feature either a rubber

strap or a stainless steel bracelet which helps to add to the

customizability of this one. Unlike most that have earned

“icon” status, the Oris Divers Titan is fairly affordable, and

real divers appreciate the combination of a great price

with excellent function. It is that idea alone that continues

to make it relevant even today. Ideal for casual and sporty

occasions, it is perhaps the overall style of this fairly modern

classic that continues to drive its sales. With a beautiful

black face, rotating divers bezel, and helium release valve,

it is backed by a brand with some real history of providing

affordable, yet luxurious pieces.

Updown Court, England - The most important private residence to be built in England since the 19th century ($150 million)

Updown Court is situated only 25 miles from London, and

through a pair of large sophisticated iron gates, one can see

a palatial construction of immense scale and beauty. The

property, however, is best known for its price tag: more than

85 million British pounds (+$150 million U$, with 103 rooms,

five swimming pools and 24-carat-gold leafing on the study’s

mosaic floor. There’s a squash court, bowling alley, tennis

court, 50-seat screening room, heated marble driveway and

helipad. Eight limousines will fit in the underground garage.

Then there are the neighbors, who include the queen (at

Windsor Castle) and Elton John. It is listed with Savills and

Hamptons International. So, even if your blood doesn’t run

blue, with enough green you can still live near—and like—

royalty!

Versailles, Florida - The largest family home ever built in the US

This 30 bedroom mansion boasts its own bowling alley,

roller skating rink and Olympic sized swimming pool to

make it the largest family home ever built in the US. Time

share mogul David Siegel and his former beauty queen wife

Jacqueline began building the huge estate three years ago.

But with almost 18 months of work still to be carried out

on the property they have put it on the market at $75m.

Experts believe a further $25m needs to be spent before

anyone can move in.

As well as 30 bedrooms the home would have 23 bathrooms

with spectacular views over Lake Butler, about 20 miles

from Orlando. The hand-built windows for the house cost

more than £2m and other luxuries include a ballroom and a

children’s theatre. There is a garage with enough space for

20 cars, three swimming pools, a large boat house, formal

gardens, and a one-story gatehouse with an apartment.

There is also a baseball field, two tennis courts, a 60 foot by

120 foot Grand Hall with a 30-foot stained glass dome, two

grand staircases, a 37 foot by 30 foot kitchen, 10 satellite

kitchens, a two-story wine cellar and a rock grotto with

three separate spas behind an 80-foot waterfall. All 23 full

bathrooms have full-sized Jacuzzis, 160 tripled paned

windows and Brazilian mahogany

French-style doors that alone cost

pds2.million. The property was called

Versailles as the entrance was modeled

after the Palace of Versailles in France.

Fleur De Lys, Beverly Hills – mariah Carey’s palace

For the woman with the most

expensive pair of legs, it was only fair

she also had one of the most expensive

houses in the world. Mariah Carey

apparently had no problem scraping

together a nice down payment on

this palace in Beverly Hills. The Fleur

De Lys is among the world’s most

expensive estates with an asking price

of $125 million. Maria Carey’s new digs

were built by a Texan billionaire on 5

acres; it is 41,000 square feet of pure

diva luxury and will also be modeled

after the most extravagant home of

its time: the Palace of Versaille, the

former home of Marie Antoinette.

Surrounding the mansion are rolling

lawns, ornamental gardens and mature

trees, a 3,000-square-foot manager’s

house, staff quarters for 10 people,

a spa and pool with a pavilion, a

championship tennis court, and a lavish

garden folly.

Hearst mansion, Beverly Hill –The Godfather mansion

This Beverly Hills mansion has been

advertised for sale at $165m (£81.4m),

making it one of the most expensive

residential property listed in the US.

The former home of US newspaper

tycoon William Randolph Hearst has

29 bedrooms, three swimming pools,

tennis courts, its own cinema and

a nightclub. He has decorated the

property with statues brought north

from his famous Hearst Castle in San

Simeon and with life-size paintings

of Davies. Mr. Hearst bought the

H-shaped mansion in 1947 for about

$120,000. In 2007, the estate’s current

owner, who bought it in 1976, put

the home on the market for US$165

million. The home’s buyer will have

some notable neighbours, including

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes and

David and Victoria Beckham.

Acqua Liana, Florida – The most luxurious eco mansion

Frank McKinney, known as the

real estate “artist,” has built a

15,000-square-foot “eco-mansion.” Is

that possible? I am not sure whether

to look in awe at all the sleek green

that money can buy, or to recoil from

the notion that 15,000 feet of excess

is environmentally friendly. Inspired

by trips to Bali, Fiji, Tahiti and Hawaii,

the three-story, 15,000-square-foot,

7-bedroom, 11-bath mansion features

floating sun terraces, a waterfall spa

with a fire feature in the water and

an arched aquarium wet bar. Green

features inside the one-off mansion

include enough solar panels to cover

a basketball court generating enough

energy for two or three average-size

homes. A water system that collects

enough run-off water to fill the

average swimming pool every 14 days

and environmentally conscious lighting

reduces electricity consumption by 70

per cent. There is enough reclaimed

wood to save 10.5 acres of Brazilian

rain forest.

But, still, do the words “green” and

“mansion” go together?

n 1902. The estate is so big that it

requires 50 full time gardeners. The

grounds cover 20 acres of garden

and visitors can stroll amongst 1,200

olive, orange, lemon and cypress trees.

In 2008, owner Lily Safra (wife of

the deceased Syrian (Lebanon-born)

businessman Edmond Safra), a famous

Jewish philanthropist, decided to sell it.

Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov

intended to buy it. After making a

ten per cent down-payment, he then

backed out of the sale after the global

credit crunch hit. But a court in Nice

later ruled that he had to forfeit the

$75 million deposit he put down for

the mansion. Prokhorov had signed

a sales agreement for the Villa, and

French law stipulates that purchasers

lose their deposits if they pull out after

such an agreement has been executed.

But don’t feel sorry for the guy, he is

still worth a cool $17.85 billion.

The manor, Los Angeles – Aaron Spelling dream house

His wife Cindy dubbed Aaron Spelling’s

56,000-square-foot LA mansion “The

Manor”. Built for him in 1991 it has 123

rooms for his family to choose from.

Nothing was spared in the creation

of this home, with an indoor skating

rink, multiple pools, three kitchens,

sports courts, private orchard, and

a bowling alley. Not happy with the

“norm” for these mansions, there are

also more unusual additions, such as a

doll museum, a room used exclusively

for wrapping presents and an entire

floor dedicated to closet space. In 2007

Candy Spelling, estranged mother

of Tori Spelling, decided that her

57,000 square foot mansion was just

a tad bit large for her and her pooch

and decided to sell it and turned the

mansion into the most expensive estate

(in terms of current listings) at that

time.

The manalapan Residence – the ultimate oceanfront estate home

Set upon 5.5 acres, with 520 feet

fronting direct Atlantic Ocean-to-

Intracoastal waterway property, The

Manalapan Residence triumphantly

blends Old World elegance and

classicism with 21st century facilities.

Some of the amenities of this 3-story

‘beach house’ includes 67,672 square

feet, 14 bedrooms, 24 bathrooms,

18 car garage, 6,140 sq. ft. master

bedroom suite, movie theatre, casino

and club room with aquarium wet bar,

gymnasium with beauty salon, shark

tank, 2 elevators, bowling alley, tennis

court and a go cart track. Do you still

need more reasons to believe this is the

greatest mansion if you want to live in

front of the ocean? The only bad thing

is its price tag of $135 million.

Barbie malibu mansion – a life-size mansion inspired by Barbie’s dream house

In honor of Barbie’s 50th birthday

celebration, interior decorator

extraordinaire, Jonathan Adler, decked

out a real-life 3,500-square-foot pad

overlooking the Pacific Ocean to look

like the blond doll’s outrageous home.

He lined Barbie’s bedroom with wall-

to-wall pink carpeting emblazoned

with her initial. The closet is filled

with 50 pairs of pink peep-toe heels

while her kitchen is stocked with

cupcake-making ingredients. An in-

house museum features 25 vintage

Barbie dolls on display. In the garage?

A pink Volkswagen New Beetle with

a motorized pop-up vanity in the

trunk. Adler’s favorite furnishings are

hanging in the living room: an original

Andy Warhol portrait of Barbie valued

at over $200,000 and a chandelier

THE wORLD’S TOP 10 LUxURY SHOE BRANDS FOR wOmEN Jimmy Choo:

Jimmy Choo is an iconic luxury lifestyle brand distinct for its

empowered sense of glamour and an assured sense of style.

The brand traces its roots to a bespoke shoemaker named

Jimmy Choo, who catered to the global jet set, including

Princess Diana. The Jimmy Choo company was founded in

1996, when Tamara Mellon discovered Mr Choo. Finding

her place in the luxury shoe market, she established the

Jimmy Choo brand. Mr Choo’s niece, Sandra Choi, joined the

business as Creative Director.

The sexy cut, fashionable design, and exceptional Italian

craftsmanship struck a chord with a stylish clientele, and

the first collection enjoyed instant success. With a goal of

creating a global luxury business, Jimmy Choo fascinated

outside investment and the company significant expanded

across product categories, channels and geographies. Mr

Choo departed the company in 2001 and Ms Mellon left in

2011.

A pioneer in the art of celebrity dressing, Jimmy Choo

was amidst the very first to bring shoes and handbags to

Hollywood where the red carpet proved to be the perfect

runway for the brand. Academy Award Winners Halle Berry

and Cate Blanchett all wore Jimmy Choo shoes when they

won. Today, Jimmy Choo can be seen on style icons from

celebrities to royalty, musicians to heads of state.

The brand’s reputation as a celebrity favourite helped to

fuel its rapid expansion. Its iconography was more defined

by the bold and theatrical advertising portraying glamorous

but strong women in towering heels and luxurious handbag.

Retail development has been integral to the company’s

strategy. The first Jimmy Choo store was opened in 1996 on

Motcomb Street in London. A few years later, the company

expanded to the US, opening two stores in New York City

and Beverly Hills. International expansion continued with

Jimmy Choo securing locations in the premiere luxury

shopping destinations of the world’s most prestigious cities

including Sloane Street and Bond Street in London, Avenue

Montaigne in Paris andVia Condotti in Rome to name a few.

Today, Jimmy Choo encompasses

a complete luxury lifestyle brand.

Women’s shoes remain the core of the

product offer, alongside handbags,

small leather goods, scarves, sunglasses,

eyewear, belts, fragrance and men’s

shoes. The design direction is managed

and run by Co-Creative Directors

Sandra Choi and Simon Holloway, who

together share a vision to create one

of the world’s most precious luxury

brands.

Christian Louboutin:

Some people learn their skills in the

hands of more seasoned masters, but

shoe designer Christian Louboutin

found his calling as a 17-year-old

apprentice in the dressing rooms of

Paris’ fcabaret, Folies Bergère.

Tina Turner to Nicole Kidman–are

still an inspiration for Louboutin, 44,

whose immediately recognizable red-

soled stilettos have become a fashion

statement on the red carpet and

among Hollywood’s A-list crowd.

Christian Louboutin spent the early

years of his career designing shoes

for some of fashion’s biggest names,

including Chanel and Yves Saint

Laurent. In 1992 he opened up his own

store at the end of a picturesque 19th

century Parisian arcade. He still runs his

business from that Rue Jean-Jacques

Rousseau address, but now his shoes

are sold in over 46 countries. He has 14

boutiques in cities such as New York,

Los Angeles and London to name a

few and he plans to open six more

next year in places such as Singapore

and Jakarta. He counts on people like

Oprah and Cameron Diaz to be among

his loyal clientele.

Louboutin is just as considerate of his

less famous customers. At a recent

personal appearance at Saks Fifth

Avenue in New York City, he canceled

his flight back to Paris in order to

spend another two hours autographing

shoes.

Louis Vuitton:

What is not to love about Louis Vuitton

woman that Weitzman chose declined

to wear the shoes. The company makes

use of unique materials not often used

by other shoemakers. These include

such materials as cork, vinyl, Lucite,

wallpaper and 24-karat gold.

From New York to Milan to Paris to

Beijing, the Stuart Weitzman shoes

THE TOP 10 mOST ExPENSIVE GEmSTONESJadeite – more than $3 million per carat

This gemstone is actually a pyroxene

mineral, usually of apple green,

emerald green, bluish green or leek

green in color. There have also been

some that are either greenish white or

white with some green spots. Jadeites

are colorless in the thin section of the

stone. The more intense the green, the

more expensive the stone will get. The

Chinese, however, also value the white

jadeite with green spots. A deep blue-

green jadeite that emits a translucent

hue has also been discovered in

recent times in Guatemala. While

it is considered valuable because of

historical reasons as the Mesoamerican

Olmec used it, the rarity of this

specific kind of jadeite has yet to be

established. Once the Guatemalans

start actively mining for it and confirms

its rarity, the value may increase even

more.

Red Diamonds – $2 million to 2.5 million per carat

This gemstone is very rare. Most of

it are actually purplish red, and not

crimson or pure red. A mining company

located in Australia gets to find only a

small number of red diamonds every

year. These are then sold at an auction

once every couple of years, and you

can just imagine the interest, demand

and price that the red diamonds

command.

Blue Garnet – $1.5 million per carat

There are many kinds of garnet

in the market. You can find it in a

variety of colors, from black, brown,

green, orange, pink, purple, red and

yellow. There have even been some

that do not have any color. But none

can compare to the price of the blue

garnet. This gemstone was discovered

in Madagascar in the 1990s, though

it has since been mined in Russia, the

United States and Turkey as well. While

it has a blue green shade, the generous

amount of vanadium in the stone

makes it emit a purplish hue when it is

held against incandescent lighting.

Grandidierite – $100,000 per carat

Alfred Grandidier was a natural

historian famed in the archaeology

world for his discovery in Madagascar

of the skeletons and remains of an

elephant bird that weighed half

a ton and that has been extinct

for thousands of years. He is also

famous in the world of gemology for

discovering in Sri Lanka a rare stone

that transmits blue, green and white

light. Initially, they thought it was

the gemstone serendibite, but after

closer scrutiny, gemologists concluded

that it was a totally new stone. It was

thereafter named after Grandidier.

musgravite – $35,000 per carat

This gemstone is actually a silicate

mineral that was first discovered in

Australia in an area called Musgrave.

While similar minerals have since been

unearthed in Madagascar, Greenland

and Sri Lanka, it is still considered

very rare. There are trace amounts of

aluminum, berrylium and magnesium

present in the stone.

“ The more intense the green, the more expensive the stone will get.

JADEITE

Bixbite – $10,000 per carat

This gemstone is also known as the red

beryl emerald. It is very rare and has

been found only in a couple of places

in Utah called Juab County and Beaver

County, and in Sierra County in New

Mexico. Most of the red beryl that

are gem-grade can be found in Violet

Claim. This is located in the Wah Wah

Mountains of midwest Utah. A Filmore,

Utah local named Lamar Hodges

discovered the bixbites by accident.

He was a mineral prospector who was

actually looking for uranium when he

stumbled upon the red beryls.

Black Opal –$2,355 per carat

Opal is the national gemstone of

Australia, which produces 97 percent

of the world’s supply. The southern

portion of the country alone produces

80 percent of all opals. Opal is not a

mineral, as it is actually an amorphous

form of silica that is related to quartz.

Up to 20 percent of the stone’s weight

is made up of water. The internal

structure of this gemstone makes it

diffract light, and it may come in a

variety of colors ranging from blue,

brown, gray, green, magenta, olive,

orange, pink, red, rose, slate, white

and yellow. But the most rare and

most expensive are the black opals.

The stone has also been unearthed in

Brazil, Mexico, the United States, Mali

and Ethiopia.

Jeremejevite – $2000 per carat

This gemstone is actually made

of aluminum borate mineral with

fluoride and hydroxide ions. Pavel

Vladimirovich Eremeev discovered it in

Siberia. Most of this stone are colored

blue or yellow. White and colorless

versions of this gem have also been

discovered. Jeremejevite has since

been unearthed in other areas as well,

notably in Namibia, the Eifel District in

Germany and the Pamir Mountain area

in Tajikistan.

should make a difference. So now we

have something to look forward too.

Normally we wouldn’t get very excited

about a new thermostat, but the Nest

has been designed by two former

Apple employees who were involved

in the creation of the iPod and iPhone.

The Nest learns your habits every time

you adjust it and automatically heats

your house to suit it. Even lets you

control the heating when you’re not

in your home via a mobile application.

The makers of the device claim that

this smart heating can halve your fuel

bills. It’s already available in the US,

and we’ve been told it’s likely to land

in the UK in 2013.

oculus rift:

Who is ready for the gaming world?

Virtual Reality (VR) gaming has been

every gamers’ fantasy since the film

The Lawnmower Man came out in

1992. Thankfully, the Oculus Rift VR

headset is nothing like that – it’s much

better. Connected to a PC, it presents

your environment in full 3D, with a

110° field of view that tracks your

head movements so you can look

around virtual worlds. It’s been trialed

by some of the gaming industry’s

leading figures, like John Carmack

the creator of Doom and Quake, and

has received their seal of approval.

When the headset launches next year,

its makers say they’re hoping to keep

it under the $300 (£185) price mark,

which is unprecedented for this kind of

technology.

basis band:

Finally, style meets substance. From

the very outset, “Basis” will go beyond

being simply a motion-based, single-

sensor device. Beneath its polished

surface lies serious technology. Your

Basis band contains the most advanced

sensors on the market, continuously

capturing heart rate patterns, motion,

perspiration and skin temperature

throughout the day and night. Most

health monitors rely on a pedometer

to tell you how active you’re keeping.

The only trouble is that they’re not

very good when your exercising, for

example, cycling or rowing. The Basis

band is a heart-rate monitor that

works without a chest strap so you can

wear it all the time and get an accurate

reading, no matter what you’re doing.

The band is also loaded with other

detectors, such as a galvanic skin

response sensor which monitors sweat

levels and an accelerometer so you can

see how changes in your heart rate

correlate with your exercise habits. This

device could give you a more accurate

picture of your health than any other

consumer gadget to date.

At times like these you are tempted

to overload your system with common

energy zappers, such as coffee, energy

drinks and sweets. While having one

or two cups of coffee in the morning is

probably okay for most people, having

an entire pot or two may be putting

you at risk. Too much caffeine can lead

to anxiety, heart problems, stroke, and

caffeine toxicity. Furthermore, as soon

as its effects wear off, you’ll be tired

again.

The risk is even greater if you rely on

energy drinks, which contain high

levels of caffeine and other stimulants

like guarana and taurine. The

“artificial” energy that these drinks

give you will only last as long as these

stimulants stay in your system.

If sugary treats are your pick-me-up,

this is another trap you should be

avoiding. Following the initial sugar

rush, your blood sugar will crash,

taking your energy levels to an all-

time low. Foods you should avoid are

cookies, doughnuts, cakes, sugary

breakfast cereals and super-sweet

drinks.

Certain foods can boost energy, which

in turn forces your body to burn

calories more efficiently. For a better

mood, the best foods are those that

help keep your blood sugar steady and

trigger feel-good brain chemicals.

Consider changing your diet to include

the following natural energy boosts:

“smart” carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are vital for boosting

energy and mood. Your body absorbs

“smart” carbohydrates more slowly,

keeping your blood sugar and energy

levels stable.

They are the body’s preferred source of

fuel, raising levels of the “feel-good”

chemical, serotonin. Choose whole

grains like whole-wheat bread, brown

rice, and oats. Oats are rich in fiber and

will give you a steady flow of energy as

it digests, and thus it is recommended

you have this for breakfast each day to

kick-start your day! The key is to avoid

sweet treats which cause your blood

sugar to spike and plummet, making

you feel tired and moody.

nuts (casheWs, almonds,

hazelnuts, brazil nuts)

Having little or no magnesium in your

system can drain your energy, as it

plays a key role in converting sugar

into energy. Nuts are rich in protein

and magnesium, with Brazil nuts also

supplying selemium to the system – a

natural mood booster. Smaller amounts

of selenium are also found in meats,

seafood, beans and whole grains.

Good sources of magnesium also

include bran cereals, and some fish.

Almonds are a super food - they are

full of protein, calcium, vitamins, and

their essential fatty acid content will

to keep your mind alert. A few nuts

mid-morning will not only boost your

vitality, but will fill you up fast!

fiber

Fiber helps keep your energy steady

throughout the day. Many people

don’t get enough fiber! This can be

remedied by eating more beans, whole

fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

lentils, seeds and berries

Lentils are a rich source of fiber and

iron, which helps the transportation of

oxygen throughout your body. Without

enough iron, you will feel lethargic.

A handful of pumpkin seeds a day

gives your body a boost in energizing

nutrients like magnesium, manganese,

phosphorus and zinc, and provide a

healthy source of protein, fat and fiber.

Berries are not only a low-sugar fruit,

they’re packed with fiber, which helps

keep your blood sugar and your energy

levels steady.

Are you constantly faced with daunting projects or physical tasks, leaving you tired and a bit frazzled? Are your energy levels slumping?

green foods

Green foods are filled with nutritional

content like vitamins B and C,

magnesium and iron, which results

in a high amount of energy when

consumed. Make a point of adding

some of the following to your lunch:

celery, parsley, green lentils, and green

peppers.

Green leafy vegetables such as spinach

and lettuce contain Folate which may

lower the risk of depression. Smaller

mounts of Folate may also be found in

legumes, nuts and citrus fruit.

fresh fruit

Fruit is a great way to satisfy your

sweet tooth, plus the vitamins,

minerals and carbohydrates add up to

a quick release of energy. Bananas are

a fantastic choice, as they are full of

electrolytes and potassium. Other great

options are oranges, apples, kiwi, figs,

dates, berries and cantaloupe - sounds

like a fruit salad is in order!

eggs

Eggs have protein, antioxidants, B

vitamins and other natural fatigue

fighters, making them a smart way to

start your day or as a snack, such as

a hard boiled egg on rye bread. One

study even found that replacing a

bagel with two eggs for breakfast gave

people higher energy levels (plus more

weight loss!).

lean meats

Skinless chicken, turkey, lean pork

and lean beef, are sources of protein.

Adding some chicken breast to your

mid-day salad, or having a half of a

chicken sandwich as a snack, is a great

way to boost your alertness, and focus

as it contains the amino acid tyrosine.

Meats also contain vitamin B-12,

which may help ease insomnia and

depression.

salmon

Fatty fish, such as salmon, is rich in

omega-3 fatty acids, which may protect

against depression and be good for a

healthy heart. Besides fish, sources of

omega-3 include nuts and leafy, dark

green vegetables.

dark chocolate

Good news for Chocoholics! A small

amount of dark chocolate can boost

your energy and mood. That’s because

of the caffeine in chocolate, as well as

the stimulant called theobromine.

Water

Staying hydrated can help you avoid

getting tired. Some studies suggest

even mild dehydration can slow your

metabolism and sap your energy. The

solution is simple -- drink plenty of

water or other unsweetened beverages

throughout the day.

tea

You can also get caffeine from tea.

Studies show that it may improve

alertness, reaction time, and memory.

And having a cup of tea is a time-

honored tradition, which may take the

edge off your anxiety.

Finally, eat small meals and snacks

every three to four hours, rather than

a few large meals. Some options to

consider: peanut butter on whole-grain

crackers, half a turkey sandwich with

salad, or whole-grain cereal with milk.

Once you start eating these natural

energy boosts you’ll wonder how

you dealt with the side effects of

caffeinate, sugary products. Your

mood and blood sugar will steady and

you will have more energy than then

energizer bunny!

ClimbingKILIMANJARO

Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain

on the African continent and the

world’s tallest free-standing mountain,

stretching 5895m in the sky.

On the lower scopes, coffee is grown

and is considered a valuable export.

Kilimanjaro is in fact a strato volcano

and has 3 volcanic cones – Mawenzi,

Shira and Kibo.

Climbers who reach Uhuru Peak on

Kibo’s crate rim, have recorded their

experience in a book which is stored in

a wooden box at the top.

Kilimanjaro is easy to climb – you don’t

need ropes or special mountaineering

gear or mountain climbing experience.

There are 6 climbing routes, with

Machame being the most popular.

The first person to climb the mountain

in a wheelchair was South African

Bernard Goosen. The youngest person

to reach the summit was 6 years old

and the eldest was 83.

Kilimanjaro is a hot spot for climate

change. Its snow caps are diminishing

due to global warming and will be

completely ice free within the next 20

years!

Climbing Kilimanjaro contributes to

a thriving local economy, generating

about $20 million annually.

Kilimanjaro inspired a continent to

freedom. Tanzania was previously

called Tanganyika and before its

independence in 1959, President Julius

Nyerere declared: “We, the people

of Tanganyika, would like to light a

candle and put it on the top of Mount

Kilimanjaro which would shine beyond

our borders giving hope where there

was despair, love where there was

hate, and dignity where before there

was only humiliation.” Today, the

summit is called Uhuru Peak. Uhuru is

the Swahili word for “Freedom.”

People climb Kilimanjaro to mark

a personal accomplishment - a

graduation, retirement, a marriage or

a divorce.

Others do so for a worthy cause or

charity. Individuals with disabilities

have climbed the mountain to

demonstrate their courage and

perseverance.

Kilimanjaro has inspired

transformation. When you climb

Kilimanjaro and stand on the roof of

Africa, you see the world in a different

way. What seemed impossible in your

might just be attainable.

Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s great natural wonders – a snow covered mountain on the equator, an ocean

of green forest surrounded by dry savannah.

Upon arrival, the multitude of granite

and marble pillars supporting this

immense structure sandwiched the

large, glass auto door leading into

the foyer. These elements of strength

are standard in the creation of master

buildings the world over.

Welcome to Viva Towers.

In Dar es Salaam.

So the first thing I see when entering

the building are 2 escalators leading

me upwards to the first retail floor. On

the ground, to my right and left are

spans of glass store fronts, a number of

elevators to whisk you safely through

22 floors, and one beaming face.

Introductions, smiles and bristling with

pride, the senior representative Ms

Asifa simply cannot wait to show off

‘their baby’.

The ‘baby’ has been awhile in the

making from inception to the final

touches being applied now. I only

have one hour available for this and

assume that it may not even take that

long. Some stores, office space, blocks

of apartments and a balcony or two

will be a breeze, and then back to the

office.

Well, not quite so.

Ms Asifa takes me on a tour of the

retail section to the left on the ground

floor, rattling names of eager store-

owners such as Samsung, Smiles

Internet Services (who were so eager,

they are already operating there

100%), JD Pharmacy, James Tong

Jewellers, V-Marché Supermarket &

Bakery and some unnamed stores, with

very few still available. To the right

side of the area are a number of stores

and this is when Ms Asifa reminds me

of the impact that the building has

on potential retail tenants. “We had a

progressive restaurant group interested

in premises on the ground, road-facing

floor, so they took all the stores on this

On my travels, I recently was invited to take a short tour of a new multi-use building development on the cusp of a bustling city. The building is imposing with double towers piercing the sky at 22 floors.

Living in the SkyBUILDING ExtRAORDINAIRE

side. It’s called Rhapsody’s” and then

she laughs out loud before adding

“its name perfectly describing the

enthusiasm of both this and all other

tenants we call friends”.

The second floor houses almost 30

offices and more retail store space,

totalling 64. This is where BET4U, the

leading Sports Betting store will open

in the near future, bringing action-

packed fun to the building.

I am now keen to check the rest of the

building, with apartments and other

amenities. Ms Asifa on the other hand

says the rest means nothing without

the foundation. It is the key to the

success of this extraordinary building.

We walk to the back entrance of the

building, where the ramp entrance

for 100’s of parking bays is situated,

and make our way underground

into broad passageways with inter-

leading doors. What an unbelievable

engineering feat. There are dedicated

rooms supplying airconditioning, safety

support such as firewater pressure

equipment and smoke detector hubs,

the mother of all power supply rooms

(all imported from the UK), and other

pressure supply piping.

Known for lack of consistent power

supply to industry and commercial

properties, the landscape of Dar es

Salaam and other growing cities

in Tanzania, are dotted with the

generators. How does Viva Towers fare

with this problem?

Firstly, the municipal-supplied

electricity can be volatile and often

spikes or troughs, creating havoc

with all types of electrical equipment.

Well, not here it doesn’t. Through a

complexed system of switch gears, the

power is received directly from Tanesco

into the building, then ‘filtered’

through an AVR (Auto Voltage

Regulator). This allows the power to be

transferred evenly to every part of the

52000sqm floor space. Couple that with

individual power boxes on each floor,

any power concern is cornered off,

resulting with power supply still being

sent to the remainder of the building.

Secondly, not one, but two 1000kva

generators are on standby in the event

that the 86 apartments have no direct

municipal power supply. As a backup

in case of any shortage of fuel, an 8000

litre fuel tank is being installed now to

supply the generators.

Floors Three, Four and Five house

public paid-for parking bays for visitors

to the retail, office and residential

tenants.

Floors Six, Seven and Eight are

complimentary parking bays for each

of the 86 apartments – 2 parking bays

per apartment.

Parking is strictly controlled with

tickets being issued for visitors for the

paid parking, and high security access

cards for the apartment residents.

I am whisked up to the 9th floor, where

I expect the first set of apartments.

Instead there is fresh air. Access-

controlled for residents only, I find a

swimming pool with splash pool. Deck

chairs. A fully integrated gym with

changing rooms, airconditioning, a

yoga room and big screen televisions. A

‘sports bar’ with food section providing

cooked and ready-made food to both

bar patrons inside, and passer-by’s on

the outside. A Party Hall with stage

and dressing room, kitchen and various

chairs and tables, for residents’ children

inconvenience residents with noise

my breath here for a second, cause

we haven’t been the apartments yet.

And the view! I relate this to the ones

in Miami and on the shores of Dubai.

Simply breathtaking, as we overlook

the Golf Course, and the lapping waves

of the warm ocean ahead.

The apartments are next. I enter a

5 bedroom apartment on the upper

floors, fully furnished. Every detail

here has been meticulously appointed.

We are interrupted briefly by one of

the Development Directors who pops

in and informs me that many months

were spent personally sourcing the

hundreds of different furnishings

for each of these apartments – and

a job well done. Ms Asifa waves

him goodbye as his phone rings for

the 5th time in a few minutes. Ms

Asifa then takes me through the

apartment detailing the modern

finishes, leather couches, Samsung

audio visual equipment and mood

lighting. All bedrooms are en-suite

with each bathroom a different design

and finishings. All bedrooms are large

with the main one having a walk-in

closet and larger interlinked bathroom,

which houses a spa bath made for two.

Everything is imported, from the tiles

to the taps to the tables to the bed

pieces. “Not only will we provide you

with modern beds, but bed linen too,

and it will be creaseless the day you

walk in. Find me fault, I welcome it and

will be honoured to amend it for you

right away” says Ms Asifa. And I can’t.

Even the family room is straight out of

a design magazine, with black leather

recliners and white set-pieces.

The kitchen is both inner and outer, so

that “odd odours from your cooking

cannot meander into the rest of

the apartment” says Ms Asifa. All

appliances are Siemens, the finishes

modern with soft-touch-close drawers

and comes with a double fridge. Gas is

piped into each apartment kitchen and

even a water cooler is standard here.

Water bottles are delivered to you

upon order, and Rhapsody’s will supply

ready-made meals to your door if you

don’t feel like cooking or taking a trip

downstairs.

The 2 & 3 bedroom apartments are the

same when it comes to modern design

and finishes, and spacious enough for

their requirements.

And the six penthouses (3 per tower)

are there for the kings of this great

city.

Claus Bremer & Associates have

architectually designed a new-world

Pyramid here. A milestone and future

classic.

The developers – Virgin Plaza – have

seen their baby grow into a mature,

wonderful living thing.

My tour took 3 hours.

This incredible building could be

standing in any city in the world. But

it’s not. It’s in our Dar es Salaam, the

city we love. It’s awe-inspiring.

Whilst the use of ATM’s is a relatively

new concept in Tanzania, it is certainly

a growing phenomena. It is true that

ATMs are a great convenience, but they

can compromise your safety if you are

not careful.

You can avoid becoming a victim of

ATM crime by using some good old

common sense and by planning ahead

for ATM withdrawals. These top 10

tips will help you not to fall victim of

an ATM crime.

1. Always pay close attention to the

ATM and your surroundings. Don’t

select an ATM at the corner of a

building -- corners create a blind spot.

Use an ATM located near the center

of a building. Do your automated

banking in a public, well-lighted

location that is free of shrubbery and

decorative partitions or dividers.

2. Maintain an awareness of your

surroundings throughout the entire

transaction. Be wary of people trying

to help you with ATM transactions. Be

aware of anyone sitting in a parked car

nearby.

3. Avoid opening your purse, bag or

wallet whilst in the queue of an ATM.

Have you card ready in your hand

before you approach the ATM.

4. Do not allow people to look over

your shoulder as you enter your PIN.

Memorize your PIN; never write it on

the back of your card. Do not re-enter

your PIN if the ATM eats your card

5. Never count cash at the machine or

in public. Wait until you are in your car

or another secure place.

6. Stand close to the ATM and shield

the keypad with your hand when

keying in your pin

7. Never force your card into the card

slot.

8. If your card gets jammed, retained or

lost, or if you are interfered with at an

ATM report it to the bank immediately

and cancel your card

9. Do not hurry during the transaction.

Carefully secure your card and cash

before leaving the ATM.

10. Remember… your security is your

responsibility. Be aware and trust your

instincts. If you are uncomfortable

cancel the transaction and move to

another ATM.

An ATm gives customers the convenience of being able to access their bank information and cash without having to stand in queues inside a branch but even more so, it gives the customer the freedom to access their money outside of traditional banking hours.
