Weekend Experience & Events

Summer is here so let’s enjoy every bit of it with Heineken. It is very fresh

and refreshing and a pleasure to drink when served cold.

It will give you the capability to recuperate for the week. Sit back, relax and enjoy a chilled glass of Heineken.

This refreshing summer cocktail has a kick of chilli heat, and it’s super-simple.

Ingredients50ml vodka (I use the East London Liquor Com-pany’s), 35ml passionfruit puree, 7ml sugar syrup, 12ml lime juice, 2 pinches Turkish chilli powder, plus 1 pinch extra to finish and half egg white

How to Make ItShake all the ingredients over ice, then double-strain into a chilled martini glass, garnish and serve.DR

Peter Gordon’s Chilli Martini Recipe

You don't need to know that Smirnoff in-

vented the Moscow mule or that two brothers used to ship ice from Boston to India for the sake of cool cocktails in order to make their all-time favorites. Tasty fruit flavors, delicious dessert fla-vors, sorbet flavors, and lots of ideas for drinks you can make with all kinds of fla-vors.

You just need a bot-tle of Smirnoff and a willingness to mix things.

Taken at its most ba-sic, it’s just a spirit that’s flavored with juniper. But be-hind that simple fa-cade lies one of the world’s most com-plex and best-loved spirits, with a his-tory that spans hun-dreds of years and reaches back to the dawn of distillation.

Gin is, at its simplest, a spirit flavored with a variety of botani-cals, with the pre-dominant flavor be-ing juniper. Despite that simple start, it is a spirit with a long and turbulent history, as well as a vibrant present and future.

Frey Ranch has a clear color. It is bold, pungent, piney complex

aromas and flavors of pine sap, lacquer, dried flowers, and smoked pepper and campfire fire with a creamy, lively, dryish medium-to-full body and a peppery, com-plex, long pine nee-dle, honeyed juniper, and chalk finish. An amazingly powerful and intense gin with 3D fresh piney juni-per flavors.

CLASSIC DRINK

Pours well and looks great in a glass. The smell is a very basic malt and hops with more emphasis on the for-mer rather than the latter.

Drinking this beer is enjoyable. Light, crisp, refreshing example of a macro lager. It is best served on tap from a tall, ice-cold Peroni glass. Nice creamy white head with fair retention.

LOUNGE BAR & RESTAURANT1st Floor Shoppers Plaza, Old Bagamoyo Road, Mikochen

Eating together at home as a family every evening: setting the table, nurturing good table manners,

taking the time to enjoy our meals seems to be paying off as well as going to the restaurant.

Getting to the restaurant before they are hungry is key for us (e.g. 11.45am when they are usually eating at noon). Making sure they had a proper opportunity to burn some energy beforehand is a must, especially with two boys!!!

The shorter the meal the easier. Going for a child-friendly place helps of course. Phoning ahead to know if they have highchairs is a good way to know. If you

go for a long meal a place where they can have a play, walk, discover things (e.g. a garden) is ideal.

In your bag you should always have their eating tools (bibs, cups, wipes…), healthy snacks to nibble on in case the meal takes a bit of time to come (dry apple, raisins…)- or we ask for bread to be brought swiftly it is in a way their “aperitif”, healthy desserts alterna-tives (e.g. compotes) – just in case, games (books, stickers, coloring, puzzles, cards…) in case everything new on the table or conversation becomes an insuf-ficient distraction. Finally, just relax! They will be fine and remember they are kids.

These unique, Middle Eastern-inspired burgers seasoned with the delicious tang of

za’atar and lemon zest are layered with incredible flavors and textures. Their toppings include a spread made with two cheeses (creamy, yogurt-like labneh and crumbly feta), along with crispy slices of gar-lic. Also perfect for sprinkling onto our simple roasted fries. Cooking the chicken patties in the same oil used to pan-fry the garlic is a clas-sic trick for achieving even tastier complexity.

Ingredient

10 Ounces Ground Chicken, 2 Potato Buns, 4 Cloves Garlic, 1 Pound Yukon Gold Potatoes, 1 Cu-cumber, 1 Lemon, 1 Bunch Pars-ley, 1 Bunch Mint, 5 Tablespoons Crumbled Feta Cheese, 1 Table-spoon Za'atar, quarter Cup Labneh Cheese.

StepsRoast the potatoes. Make the garlic chips:Once the potatoes have roasted for about 5 minutes, in a medium pan (nonstick, if you have one), combine the garlic and a thin layer of oil. Cook on medium, stirring occasion-

ally, 3 to 4 minutes, or until the gar-lic is lightly browned and crispy and season with salt and pepper. While the potatoes continue to roast, in a large bowl, combine the ground chicken, lemon zest, parsley and za’atar; season with salt and pep-per. Gently mix to combine; using your hands, form into two half-inch-thick patties. Transfer to a plate. Heat the pan of reserved oil on medium-high until hot. Add the pat-ties; cook, loosely covering the pan with foil, 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate, leaving any browned bits (or fond) in the pan.

Carefully discard the oil from the pan. While the patties cook, in a bowl, combine the cucumber, mint (finely chopping just before adding) and the juice of all 4 lemon wedg-es; season with salt and pepper. Drizzle with olive oil and stir to com-bine; season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside. In a separate bowl, combine the labneh and feta cheese; season with salt and pep-per to taste.

Serve with the roasted potatoes and any remaining relish on the side. Garnish with the remaining garlic chips. Enjoy!

Broccoli is one of nature’s rock stars. It's a top source of natural plant chemicals shown to help lower the risk of some can-cers (though many other things also affect your cancer risk). Each cup of the florets also gives you plenty of vitamins C and K.

Cooking tip: Steam the florets for a simple side dish. Or add them into stir-fries, frit-tatas, and even smoothies that also have naturally sweet things, like fruit, to mask the broccoli taste.

Po s i t i v e work be-haviors is

by far one of the most straight-forward tips I can give you when it comes to moving up the corporate lad-der. Whenever people speak about moving up the corpo-rate ladder, do you feel like it almost always has a cunning undertone? So, what are some straightforward

positive work behaviors for moving up the corporate lad-der? Here are some tips:

IDEAS - Regard-less of how ju-nior you are in an organization, you can have ideas that posi-tively affect the company. Do not be shy or embar-rassed about sharing them ei-ther. What’s the worst that can happen? They

laugh at it and reject the idea?

IMPACT - Be smart enough to choose some projects in a year that are considered a challenge for your level of ex-perience. Be h a r d w o r k i n g enough to see it through.

IMPECCABLE - This positive work behavior is to be flawless in your language

and dressing. Know you are judged at all times. First im-pression or not, people judge you on how you talk and what you wear. INDEPENDENT - Learn to work independently. In the age of empowerment, most employees are given the freedom to fail.

INTEREST - Show interest in

your company’s initiatives. Be an interested party in things involv-ing your depart-ment.

INTEGRITY - This positive work behavior means to have a sound moral character. Prac-ticed at its most basic level for a career newbies, it can be as sim-ple as not talking bad about a col-league and gos-siping.

FOOD RULES IN ITALYItalian food culture is probably very different from what you’re used to at home. And, since Italians have been perfecting it for over 1,000 years, try going with the wine and olive oil flow instead of fighting against the current when you’re in Italy.

• Don’t ask for “fettuccine alfredo” or “spaghetti with meatballs”. They don’t exist here. • Only drink wine or water with a meal.• Don’t eat eggs in the morning. The quintessential Ital-

ian breakfast is a strong espresso and a sweet pastry. •Do drink cappuccino in the morning.•Know what a “peperoni pizza” is.•Don’t peel your fruits and vegetables.•Don’t ask for salad dressing rather reach for the olive oil and vinegar. •Use condiments spar-ingly. Olive oil is the only real Italian condiment. •Take time to enjoy your food. Eating is not a race, and a bowl of ce-real in front of late-night TV is not a dinner.•Wait to eat plain bread with your meal.

Ghana's beating heart probably won't inspire love letters, but you might just grow to like it. The capital's hot, sticky streets are perfumed with sweat, fumes and yesterday's cooking oil. Like balloons waiting to be burst, clouds of dirty humidity linger above stalls selling mangoes, banku (fermented maize meal) and rice. The city's tendrils reach out towards the beach, the centre and the west, each one a different Ghanaian experience. The city doesn't have any heavy-hitting sights like Cape Coast or Elmina but it does have good shopping, excellent nightlife and definitely the best selection of eating options in Ghana.

Kwame Nkrumah memorial park, Bojo beach, Aburi botanical gardens, Labadi pleasure beach, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s mausoleum, Makola market, James town lighthouse, Na-tional museum of Ghana, Kokrobite beach, Ghana nima tours, Cathedral church of the most holy trinity, Coco beach and Palace hypermarket are places you can visit in Ghana when you fly RwandAir.

In September 2016 will introduce it's New Airbus A330 and will start to Bombay and Guangzhoù- China .

WAYS PARENTS CAN HELP PREVENT TEEN DEPRESSION

Parents are understandably worried about their teens. Fortunately, scien-tists who study teen depression have some preliminary advice. By looking at new findings in neuroscience, as well as other psychological research

and longitudinal data, scientists are zeroing in on a better understanding of what impacts teen depression and how to prevent it. Here are some of the sug-gestions coming out of the science.

Firstly, provide continual warmth, caring, and support. Parents may think that they have little to offer teens; but recent studies suggest otherwise. Secondly, teach and model strong social and emotional skills. Just like adults, teens often have to cope with difficult social and emotional situations—changing friendships, romantic relationships going sour, disappointments in their work, the stress of academics or college admissions procedures.

Next, encourage positive peer relationships. All teens look to their peers for approval and status. But if these relationships are fraught, they may lead to depression. Then, encourage teens to seek purpose in life. As teens put lots of effort into excelling at schoolwork and after-school activities, it’s important that those activities have some personal meaning for them, rather than serving as padding for college applications. Finally, work to change the school environment if necessary because systemic changes in schools, for example, that could lead to better psychological health for teens.

LOSING WEIGHTLosing weight means changing the balance of calories in to calories out. If we eat more calories than we need, we can gain weight. If we eat fewer calories than we use, we can lose weight.

So start with good information: you need to know how many calo-ries you should eat each day for your individual level of activity, and then you'll need to find ways to stay within your limits. Find out your personal daily calorie intake and fat needs.

To lose weight, you must use up more calories than you take in. One pound is approximately 3,500 calories.

To successfully and healthfully lose weight—and keep it off—most people need to subtract about 500 calories per day from their diet to lose about 1 pound per week. Additionally, you need on 2 or more days a week muscle-strengthening activities. Besides helping you lose weight, physical activity also improves the quality of life.

The amount of physical activity any individual person needs for weight loss can vary, but you will need to get both regular physical activity and follow a healthy eating plan to lose weight and keep it off. A good plan may include 30 to 60 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity, like brisk

Teaching Children How To CountNumbers are every-

where, and opportuni-ties for learning math

skills surround you. When teaching your tot how to count, it is always best not to make a production out of the fact that they are count-ing, but simply initiate the counting, model it and most of all, have fun with it! Here are some ideas to get you started.

•Talk it out. Have mathemat-ical conversations with your youngster. Fill their world with "How many?" questions.

• Count around the House. • Make a Craft. You can also give your child some twine and piles of dry macaroni or O-shaped cereal and let their make a necklace.

• Read Counting Books.

• Have a Sing-a-Long. Your little one doesn't care if your voice is off-pitch, so don't be afraid to belt out a song to-gether.

Counting is everywhere -- you just have to engage your child to do it, and make it fun!"
