HOW DOES COVID-19 SPREAD?COVID-19 can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with the disease coughs or exhales. These droplets land on objects and surfaces around the person. People can catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth; or if they breathe in droplets from a person with COVID-19 who coughs out or exhales droplets. It is therefore crucial that a distance of at least 2 metres (3 steps) is kept from a person who is ill with the virus.
WHO IS MOST AT RISK?Older adults aged over 70 years are the most vulnerable group. It is recommended that grandparents over 70 stay away from grandchildren during this time. Those who have a weakened immune system (such as those on immunosuppressant medication) or those with poorly managed chronic conditions (like heart disease, diabetes, liver or lung disease) are also at risk.
SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19
HOW IS COVID-19 TREATED?There is no medication or vaccine to treat COVID-19 as yet.
Therefore, current treatment is based on management of symptoms and will be dependent on the severity
of the infection.
MORE SEVERE SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:
Pneumonia
Severe acute respiratory syndrome
Kidney failure
LOOKING AFTER THE ELDERLYIT IS IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE AGED OVER 70 YEARS TO REMAIN AT HOME DURING THIS CRITICAL PERIOD. FAMILY AND FRIENDS CAN: › Check in daily, by phone, video calling
