Thrilling activities

Mille8 Ski, swim, eat and play

The MiIIe8 development above Arc 1800 will fully open this winter after opening some areas last season. This is a completely new concept rather than just a regular base village linked to a ski area. Mille8 is a an activity and entertainment hub, open at least 12 hours a day with indoor and outdoor facilities and events and activities taking place all winter. The outdoor facilities include a toboggan, a freestyle area, a secured area for children. The indoor facilities include a swimming pool, a spa, a play area for children. Mille8 is opening a new restaurant called Le Lodge.

Launched last winter in a few resorts, the fat bike will be the new trend of winter 2015/16. The fat bike is a bicycle with over-sized tires designed for low ground pressure to allow riding on soft snow. Fat bikes are built around frames with wide forks and stays to accommodate the wide rims required to fit these tires.

Praz sur Arly and Les Saisies offer different types of sessions to try riding a fat bike on the snow. In La Plagne and Le Grand Bornand, it is an après-ski activity. Riders can take a gondola at the end of the day to ride down the slopes.

Several resorts also offer electric mountain-biking on the snow. In the Val d’Arly, start at the top with a 360-degree view of Mont-Blanc and the Aravis range and ride down 7km of groomed slopes. Riders can then head to the first bike park on snow in France, where they can test their balance and practise their turns. At sunset, they can go for a last bike ride with headlights.

Biking

The Bear Grylls Survival Academy is launching exclusive survival courses in La Clusaz. Survive 24 hours in the snow and freezing temperatures with your team: learn to make a fire without matches, build an emergency shelter, find food, cross difficult terrain, etc. It costs €250 per person. www.beargryllssurvival academy.com

Sport enthusiasts will love the swimming pools, diving area, climbing wall and indoor surfing area. The spectacular surf wave is the first indoor example of its size in France. In the fun area, you can run, jump, shout and swim. Take on your friends on the three-lane water slide or stock up on thrills in the 110m wild water rapids. The wellness area is equipped with a jetstream pool, a salt-water pool and a bubble pool. Aquamotion’s architecture is in complete harmony with the environment and enjoys natural light on all sides thanks to its vast bay windows. The roof, which follows the form of the land and looks like a vast green wave, is entirely covered with vegetation. A wood heating system was chosen for all the buildings and pools.Aquamotion will open early December 2015.

Courchevel Aventure invites children aged six and over to learn how to drive a real snowmobile. The activity takes place on a specially adapted 700-metre circuit near the Family Park, at an altitude of 2,000 metres. The concept was tested for the first time last year, and was an immediate success. It costs €45 per child for 20 minutes.

A third BabyPark is opening in Savoie Mont Blanc. After Praz de Lys and Val d’Arly, Les Saisies is the third resort to

have a BabyPark. Created by Frédéric Borgey and Elsa Jougla, the BabyPark allows children aged from three to seven to learn dog sledding in a safe environment. The equip-ment used is adapted to little ones and the dogs are specially trained to be with children. The BabyPark has a chalet where children can warm up after a session of fun learning, or play when it snows. The BabyPark concept has been franchised and is now being exported to Germany, Italy and Norway.

Most ski resorts in Savoie Mont Blanc are open until the end of April – some like Tignes and Val Thorens are open even later!

Skiing in April has many great advantages: it is often cheaper, less busy, sunnier and warmer which makes it an ideal time to go with young children, and the days are longer to enjoy some fun après-ski in the sun! And moreover, April is now packed with events.
