John Wheeler, Executive Director of USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Lewis County announced that the county committee elec-tions are in progress. Ballots were mailed to eligible voters and completed ballots must be returned by mail or to local FSA offi ces by Dec. 3, 2012. “I encourage producers to vote in this elec-tion because the county committee members play a huge role in the Agency, especially at the county level,” said Wheeler. “County committee members make decisions on how federal farm programs will be administered locally.” County committee members are elected to offi ce by their peers and serve as the repre-sentative voice for agriculture producers in the county, and they are responsible for com-municating with USDA to ensure that na-tional programs are adapted to fi t local needs. County committees are responsible for making decisions on issues in-cluding commodity loans and payments, conserva-tion programs, disaster as-

sistance programs and emergency programs. Wheeler encourages minority and female produc-ers to serve as county committee members in the future. It is important that the county committee is comprised of members who refl ect the demograph-ics of the local agriculture community. Farmers and ranchers who participate in FSA pro-grams are eligible to vote. If eligible voters do not receive a ballot by mail, one will be provided by the local USDA Service Center. Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked no later than Dec. 3, 2012. New county committee members will as-sume their role and related responsibilities on Jan. 1, 2013. For more information on county committees, view the FSA website at www.fsa.usda.gov/elections or visit the Lewis County FSA offi ce or call 573-767-5274.
