Our readings this week lead us to ask ourselves: “Whom do I serve?” Do I really serve God’s vision of love and justice in the world? Do I hold that vision of hope so deeply that I can sustain myself and my community with joy? We have spent this past week with the delegates from our Sister Parish in Guatemala, living God’s vision for the world. It is not hard to be clear about the path of discipleship when you spend time with people so grounded in their journey with God. Eluvia, Patty, Maria, Lionel and Evelio return home tomorrow, and it will be a very difficult farewell. We are people united in faith, sharing one another’s struggles and multiplying one another’s joys. This past week, we connected with many Minnesotans working for justice, including Native American, African American and Latino American groups serving our community. Our delegates, who are leaders in their church and in their municipality, shared their experiences organizing on issues of poverty, violence and children’s health and education. We met with Mary Johnson (who spoke here at SJA) to hear her story of reconciling with the young man who killed her son. We joined the peace witness on the Lake Street Bridge. We witnessed a hearing for those awaiting deportation. Our delegates served on a Mobile Loaves and Fishes run. And we went up to Fred and Anna Vagle’s cabin on the coldest day of the summer for a true retreat! Mostly, though, we connected with one another in a spirit of thanksgiving, with prayer and food and much laughter. Our relationship of solidarity unites us across many miles and it has thrived for 21 years thanks to our Sister Parish committee and their work. We are very grateful to all who planned these 10 days, to our host families, drivers and translators, and to Carrie Stengel, the executive director of Sister Parish, Inc., who traveled with the delegation and is an invaluable asset to the organization and to us. We are thankful for the partnership of the SJA Outreach Fund, which helps delegates travel from TNII and supports youth scholarships and women’s group leadership in Guatemala. And we are grateful to you, the community of St. Joan of Arc, for your participation in this ministry. Please consider joining our delegation from SJA to TNII in 2016 – it is a life-transforming experience. Stop on the plaza after Mass this morning for cake, and to share a goodbye hug. And please join us for our potluck tonight in Hospitality Hall at 5 pm for great food, games and conversation – and families are most welcome. Farewell to our brothers and sisters, safe travels home, and know that our love goes with you until we meet again! Presider: Fr. James Cassidy Pre-Mass Speaker: Delegates from our Sister Parish in Guatemala will share their thoughts at the close of their time with us. Thank you so much! We welcome the beautiful, musical inspiration from singer, Carin Vagle and keyboardist, George Maurer at today's Gym Masses. Thank you for your artistry! The Sunday Morning Registration and Information Office is located in the Parish Center. In the office you may register to become a SJA parishioner; get program information; sign up for a program; and register to volunteer. The office is open after both of our Sunday morning liturgies. Mobile Loaves and Fishes Needs Socks! Please place your donations in the collection hamper in the Parish Center entrance. FFI email [email protected].

common home. We have invited Fr. Jim DeBruycker to join us and share his thoughts on this prophetic document and its implications for us all. To read the encyclical before our gathering, go to www.usccb.org or www.vatican.va.

We Pray for Our Children: ISAIAH at SJA. Stop by tables this morning to RSVP for a prayer circle today, 2 - 3 pm at Mpls Public Schools Headquarters at the Davis Center (1250 West Broadway in Mpls). Parents, educators and people of faith will pray for this new school year and we will commit ourselves to creating an educational system where all children are treated as sacred and resources are prioritized to reflect such a vision.

The Torture of Solitary Confinement: A groundswell of support is developing to end the practice of prolonged solitary confinement in our prisons. In conjunction with the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, we will have info and actions available after Mass next week to raise awareness and help to end this practice.

SJA Outreach Fund News: In the last Justice Grant cycles, our committee awarded a total of $28,600 to 8 organi-zations in which our parishioners serve as volun-teers and leaders. Three of those grants went to housing organizations - Alliance Housing, Inc.;

Simpson Housing Services; and Beacon Interfaith Housing Collab-orative - to provide affordable, supportive housing in our communi-ty. Our parish is deeply invested in ending homelessness, and our youth are particularly committed to providing housing for homeless youth. Our Justice grants reflect that commitment. Thanks to all who support our SJA Outreach Fund, which makes these grants possible, and remember that 100% of your support of the Outreach Fund goes directly to outreach. FFI on the SJA Outreach Fund or applying for a Justice Grant, contact Julie Madden.

SJA Delegations Returning: We welcome back SJA adult and youth parishioners who traveled to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to serve with and learn from the Lakota people. We also welcome those SJAers who returned recently from a weeklong leadership training with ISAIAH where they were joined by people of faith working for justice from around the country. Through these jour-neys, as well as through our time with our Sister Parish delegation, we seek what Pope Francis has described as a spirituality of "encounter." We build relationships of mutuality and respect with fellow members of our human family, whose lives and experiences are vastly different from our own, in an effort to recognize and hon-or the dignity and divinity of all. This is the principle of solidarity in action, and we invite you to be part of our SJA ministries as we try to live this call. Thanks to all the parishioners who lead us on this path. Your commitment and witness are inspiring to us all.
