Silence for Refl ection

Nicene Creed Presider Let us confess our faith, as we say,All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Th rough him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucifi ed under Pontius Pilate; he suff ered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorifi ed. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Sanctus Proulx

Presider We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made fl esh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night he was handed over to suff ering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Th erefore, Father, according to his command,All we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory;

Presider and we off er our sacrifi ce of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifi ce, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctifi ed by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the fi rstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and forever. All Amen.

Share the GiftsIf you know the brokenness of life, its fractures within and its division without, then you have partici-pated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in the breaking of bread. If you desire

to know the love of God that overcomes indiff erence and despair, if you desire the reconciliation that overcomes estrangement and alienation then you are invited to share the cup of the new covenant. Th e bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the common cup. If you wish to dip bread in the wine, extend one hand for a wafer. Both wine and unfermented grape juice are served, grape juice is admin-istered from the copper chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request in the East alcove.

Prayer and Laying-on of Hands for HealingWe invite those wishing particular prayer for themselves or on behalf of someone else, or to share in a prayer

of thanksgiving for blessings received, to come to the front of the line to receive the bread and wine. Immediately after receiving, go to the prayer station. Give your fi rst name and in a low voice briefl y state your prayer need. Th e prayer team will lay hands gently on your shoulders and after a short silence, they will pray quietly for you. While the communion is being administered, we respectfully ask that you keep the silence — this is a time for quiet prayer and meditation.

Sending Out of the DisciplesPresider All your works praise you, O Lord. All And your faithful servants bless you.

Gracious God we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. May we, who share his body, live his risen life; we, who drink his cup, bring life to others; we, whom the Spirit lights, give light to the world. Keep us fi rm in the hope you have set before us, so that we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.Blessing

Children’s Church……happens Sunday morning for children ages 2-5, 5-8 and 9-12.

We have three age groups to better meet the learning needs (focus, energy, etc) of all children from 1-12.

Th e youngest group (1-4) meets in the Lounge for Pre-School Church with consistent staff who provide a short learning program, creative work and lots of one-on-one time. Th e older two groups participate in either an interactive spiritual practices program in the Parish hall, or Godly Play in the new Godly Play space. Groups alternate between programs each week.

Godly Play is a Montessori-based faith formation pro-gram that engages the children in Biblical and litur-gical stories, making-meaning, creativity and prayer while immersed in a supportive community of peers and adults.

18 Th e Fifth Sunday of Easter | May 14, 2017

Notes from Dean Peter ElliottMay 14, 2017

Few passages of Christian scripture have been more vigorously debated than John 14:1-14, the gospel ap-pointed for the 5th Sunday of Easter: especially verse 6, “Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also.” Used often to make a case for the exclusivity and superiority of Christian religion, this verse has sparked evangelical zeal amongst some and become the reason for others to abandon the Christian church.

To understand the context of this passage you have to remember that this is one of the great “I am” state-ments from John’s Gospel. Th ere are seven times Jesus says “I am”: Bread; Light; Gate; Shepherd; Resurrec-tion and Life; Way (Road), Truth and Life; and Vine.

When Jesus says, “I am the way” there are two parts to this assertion: “I am” and “the way”(or road). Now the words “I am” for the fi rst hearers of John’s gospel would remind them of Moses at the burning bush, when God called Moses to lead the children of Isra-el out of slavery in Egypt, Moses asks God who he should say sent him—and God says “tell them 'I am' sent you.” “I am” is how God describes God’s self, it is the name of being itself, the name that cannot be named. God’s name can never be spoken because to name something is to have power over it, to control it and we cannot domesticate the Holy One.

So when Jesus says “I am” he’s not on an ego trip: rath-er, this is the incarnate God pointing to the One who is the source of life. What he is saying is that God is the road—the way—the pathway of our lives. Th ink of it this way—Jesus is transparent—you see through the life of Jesus into the heart of the One who is beyond our naming, beyond our control, who is the source of life itself—and that One is the road, the pathway, the very ground of our being: and there we fi nd truth and life. A couple of verses later, Jesus says, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” Again, this is not Jesus on an ego trip: this is directing our focus towards the very Creator of the Universe. Th eologian Brian McLaren puts it this way:

Jesus says … that the invisible God has been made visible in his life. If you want to know what God is like, Jesus says, look at … my character. And what has that charac-ter been? One of exclusion, rejection, constriction, elitism, favoritism, and condemnation? Of course not! Jesus’s way has been compassion, healing, acceptance, forgiveness, in-clusion, and love from beginning to end…But our con-ventional interpretation .. seems to say, “Forget all that. Forget everything you’ve seen in me, the way I’ve lived and treated people, the way I’ve accepted prostitutes and tax collectors, the way I’ve welcomed outsiders and rejects. Forget all that. Believe, instead, that God will reject ev-eryone except people who share your doctrinal viewpoints about me, because I won’t let anyone get to the Father unless they get by me fi rst by joining my new religion.” 1

We come to know God on the roadways of our lives as we meet the Risen Christ, most often coming to us disguised in the lives of those who we encounter day by day. Th e Christian way invites all who seek truth and life to become part of a community who seeks to discover how God comes to us on the way.
