P a g e 4 T u c s o n Q u i l t e r s N e w s This month we welcome our featured artist, Nancy Chong. and her lecture of "First Make it Fun"....be certain to stop at the pro-grams table and become inspired by the beautiful samples she

loaned us. Sit back and relax and enjoy! We still have some openings in our May workshops featuring Melody Johnson. Remember that these are the workshops you want to consider if carrying your machine back and forth to classes is bothersome to you, as NO SEWING MACHINE is required in either of Melody's workshops. Please remember that BOTH workshops require you to purchase a fabric packet of Melody's hand dyed fabrics, enough to make the class project. No color guess work to do here! The fabric pack will cost $20 payable directly to Melody on the day of the workshop. Both workshops will include use of the decorative blades for the rotary cutter. Melody will have them available for you to try or buy. Her workshop on Thursday, May 11, 2006 is "Bodacious Bloomers", where her whimsical floral quilts have delighted her students and collectors for years. Learn Melody's easy techniques for producing several flower shapes, including Pinwheel and Sunflowers, as well as innovative backgrounds for your petite quilt. Hand stitched embellishments and finishing alter-natives complete the quilt in one day! On Friday, May 12, 2006, Melody's workshop, "Power Strips" will have you whipping out your sunglasses for this dazzling wall quilt made from the simple fabric strip! Melody has told us that the fabric pack you will be required to purchase from Melody for this will be enough for two of the class projects in the one day! This month we also begin signups for the workshops being offered by our June featured speaker, Jan Krentz. On Thursday, June 15, 2006, Jan will present her "Diamond Landscapes" workshop. NO SEWING MACHINE RE-QUIRED! Take very small amounts of lots of different fabric and create an impressionist type scene or background using diamond shapes. Jan's Friday workshop is "Love That Lone Star". Here is your opportunity to learn to sew a basic, traditional Lone Star quilt with Jan's foolproof techniques! Be adventurous with brilliant color or use this design as a "stash reducer" to incorporate those favorite fabrics on the shelf at home. This class will cover design tips and offer suggestions for fabric placement. Se-lect fabrics in colors similar to the ones Jan has used, or feel free to create your own dazzling color palette! Glue fabrics in the design paste-up, and pre-cut strips for the central star before class. This class will feature strip piecing, cutting, press-ing and discuss Y-seam techniques. Please come back to the Programs table to sign up for any of these workshops. Don't delay as most workshops will fill quickly! As a reminder, if you are an attendee of the morning meetings, should you have to leave while our guest artist is speaking, please exit out of the back side of the hall, behind the black out drape, so there will be as little disruption to our speaker and fellow guild members as well. Should you have any questions pertaining to programs, you can contact Barbara Collins at 742-9262 or email at [email protected], or Deborah Schoof at 579-5621. Her email is [email protected]. We look forward to a fun year! Barbara Collins and Deborah Schoof Programs Co-Chairpersons

MYSTERY IN THE DESERT This month we bring you Chapter Three of our mystery quilt. If you're just finding out about it, all three chapters can be found on the TQG website: http://iwhome.com/quilter/ ---and we try to keep a few extra copies at the Block of the Month table, too. It's not too late to get started --- the plot thickens----and the solution to the mystery will be revealed in the 5th and final chapter, in May. If you have any questions about the Mystery Quilt, please call or email Evelyn George, at 325-0166 [email protected].

We sure had a lot of sweet "Candy Hearts" at our February meetings--did you feel the love? Sue Burns won the 11 blocks on Tuesday evening, and Joyce O'Conner won 22 and Norma

Palomares won 21 on Wednesday. Congratulations, ladies, and have fun making your special Valentine quilts! And thanks to everyone who entered. Keep it up --who knows, next time YOU could be the winner! At our March meetings, we will begin our new series for the year. Our theme is "Classic Pieced Blocks from TQG's Ar-chives," in honor of the Guild's 30th Anniversary. The first block is "Weathervane" (pattern was in last month's newsletter). Bring out those greens and spring colors, and make a block (or several) for the March meetings. The more you enter the more chances you have to win! Please bring them to the Block of the Month table as early as you can, before the meeting starts! In April we will have drawings for your "Blackford's Beauty" blocks. The pattern is in this newsletter. As for all blocks in this series, we have simplified the cutting and piecing to eliminate templates, Y seams, etc. In fact, for Blackford's Beauty, all the pieces (except one) are cut from 2" strips! Check it out! Now is the time to think about making a "30th Anniversary Sampler" for yourself using these patterns from the Guild ar-chives. The updated patterns will be in our monthly newsletters, on the TQG website. Why not plan your own color scheme and make the blocks each month as we go along, and at the end of the year, you'll have all 12 blocks to set into a quilt. (Don't forget to enter a block in the drawings, too!) Also, we are in the process of putting together a set of at least 12 Floral Applique blocks, inspired by the old ones in the Guild archives. There will be a folder of the original patterns for you to look at, and if you are interested, please sign the or-der list at the Block of the Month table, or just email me at [email protected]. The cost will be $5 payable when the pat-terns are ready (we are updating these, too-- we hope to have them available in April). You could make a Floral Applique Sampler from these, or combine them with the Block of the Month 30th Anniversary pieced blocks. (Please note that these applique patterns will NOT be given as Block of the Month; they are a separate set for those who might be interested.)

BLOCK OF THE MONTH

Quilts for Soldiers

Last year our guild participated in a program with the Quilt Guild of Southern Maryland to provide quilts for soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. This Tucson Guild project, spearheaded by Anne Berry, was suspended in the spring of last year because the Maryland guild had all the quilts they could distribute, so they ended their program. They had collected over 6000 quilts! Recently I became aware of another broader project providing quilts for soldiers. This group, coordinated by Catherine Roberts, can be found at www.quiltsforsoldiers.com This program is structured for individual quilters, and therefore is not appropriate for an organized Guild project which would require bulk mailing. These Quilts of Valor, as they are called, are sent by individual quilters to a chaplain designated by the coordinator. The quilts should be at least 50 inches by 60 inches, but can be larger. They are to be quilted, not tied and the fabrics, colors and patterns selected should be worthy of these fine soldiers. The chaplains say the soldiers and Marines actually prefer the patriotic themes, but any colors or patterns are appreciated. The coordinator reminds us that many of the wounded are women, so the feminine perspective is also fine. They require a label which should include the date, where the quilt was made, who pieced and quilted it, and the words, “Made for” followed by a space in which the chaplain will write the name of the soldier who will receive the quilt. When the quilt is finished and washed, email Catherine at [email protected] for a destination. She will tell you where your quilt is to be sent. (There are ideas on the website on how to send the quilt easily.) One last thing, there are longarm quilters who are donating their time as well. If you only make the top, you can contact Jane Moore at [email protected] and she will match you with a longarmer to whom you can send your top. If the longarmer has time, she will bind the quilt and send it to the chaplain. If she does not, she will send it back to you for binding and you can send it to the chaplain after emailing Catherine Roberts as described above. All these details are on the website. Call me for further questions at 885-2547. I made a quilt last year and am eager to make more using this new site. I hope many of you terrific quilters in our Tucson Quilter’s Guild will do the same. Pat Hiller

Who: All Members

What: Business Meeting—First Weds of every month in the Church Classroom General Meetings - second Wednesday of the month in the morning or the Tuesday evening preceding the second Wednesday - in the Parish Hall.

When: Business Meeting — 9:30 AM ~ 10:30 AM General Meetings: Tues Evening—7:00~9:30 PM. Wednesday—9:30 AM~12:00 PM

Where: St Frances Cabrini Church 3201 E. Presidio Near Fort Lowell and Country Club

(How): Parking

Guild members are asked to refrain from parking in the spaces in front of the Parish office; the Church wants these spaces to remain open for Church members who have business to attend to in the office. This is the small building to the east of our meeting room. We are welcome to park in any of the other spaces on the church property. Doris Emer, the Guild parking monitor, does a great job patrolling this and she’ll let you know if you are in violation!

Why: Come to get involved with all aspects of the Guild, to make new friends, learn new quilting skills, share, but most of all, to have FUN.

The Guild Basics Guidelines for Handling Guild Money

1. All money collected must be turned over to the Treasurer for deposit into Guild's account as soon as possible. If you receive a payment in cash you must complete a 3 part receipt. One copy goes to Treasurer with the cash, one copy to the purchaser and one copy for your records.

2. Check requests must be made in writing on Treasurer's reimbursement form, signed by the appropriate committee chairperson and accompanied by any receipts or invoices. 3. Checks issued by the Treasurer should be cashed or

deposited as soon as possible. Lost checks require a stop payment for which the bank charges the Guild a fee of $25. At a business meeting on April 3, 2002 a motion was made and approved to charge the member or person the fee of $25 whenever a stop payment was required.

I try to issue a check or receipt as soon as I receive the request, but it is imperative that proper guidelines be met by all concerned. If you cannot attend a meeting and have receipts to turn in for reimbursement, you may mail them to me at my home and I will have a check out to you in the following day's mail. If you have monies to turn in to me and cannot attend a meeting, you may bring them to me at my home or call me to arrange a meeting were the funds can be handed over and a receipt will be issued to you at that time. I usually sit at the front of the meeting room to the right of the stage at every general meeting. If you should require a receipt or Check Reimbursement form I will be happy to supply them to you. Thank You, Mary Perry Treasurer
