Board Formations & Succession Planning
• Rachael Bender• Southwest Florida
Succession Planning Starts Early• Where are your members coming from?
– Recruit members who are on the board of other associations like the chamber of commerce
– Recruit members who have served on corporate boards
– Ask new members about their other board experience
Poll Question:
How do you feel about your chapter's board succession planning?
• Developing a Board Starts on Committees!
• Strong & Active Committees
• Easy Ways to Get Involved with Minimal Time Commitment
• Active Marketing of Committees– Membership Application– New Member Orientation– Newsletters, Emails
Succession Planning Starts Early
Succession Planning Starts Early
• How does this benefit me? – Find jobs that match interest of business owner– Stress what leadership benefits members can get from involvement– Highlight increased networking & visibility within organization– Don’t focus on chapter needs, focus on individual
• Have Committee Chairs be responsible for identifying their successor and mentoring them
Poll Question:
What percentage of your membership is involved on a committee or on the board?
How it Works: Succession Planning in Tucson
Dianne KelleyPresident of Greater Tucson
How it Works: Succession Planning in Tucson
• Board Nominations: Nominees to serve on our Board should have been Activity Group chairs or co-chairs prior to nomination. There are some exceptions.
• Executive Board: Should have previously served on the Board
• Succession planning- nominees from the previous year who did not get the position
• Activity group chairs and co-chairs• Member orientation – help new members find an Activity
Group
Questions for Dianne?
• Are you waiting for your next president to come to you or do you find them?
• How do we groom future leaders? – Put them in positions that they can be successful– Acknowledge their hard work and efforts– Talk about their future in NAWBO– Set up a seasoned board member to mentor them– Encourage them to step into a more visible leadership position– Let her know that you think she is “presidential” material
Succession Planning Starts Early
Recruiting a President-Elect/President
• Assess the time commitment that you expect of your leaders• Can you hire a part-time virtual assistant or executive director? • Do you need to rearrange some responsibilities?
• NAWBO Columbus added a Vice President board position to enable four years of consistent leadership.
• The first Vice President becomes President-Elect, the President-Elect becomes President, and the President becomes the Immediate Past President.
• If you don’t have enough nominations reach out to those who have previously served on your board.
• Some former board members may now be ready to step into a president-elect position
