President’s ReportAfter a hectic but very enjoyable December, things calmed down a bit at the club and it is back to looking normal minus all the glitter and lights of the festive season. January was quiet as everyone was catching their breath and activities at the Club have been at best ‘normal. . The rst month of the year is over and I hope it has started o well for all of us at the club and we are all having a Happy New Year so far and also we are able to hold on to our resolutions. This is also a time for reection, the upcoming year is an opportunity to reect, take stock and recalibrate. We also have a lot to be thankful for with all that has happened at the Club over the past year. The ‘Parade Party’ on Republic Day was a joint eort by Catholic Club and St. Patricks Church to raise funds for various missions carried out by the Archdiocese. We like to thank everyone who joined us in supporting this initiative which was driven by Msgr. C. Francis, the Parish Priest of St. Patrick’s Church. The Day Bumper Housie held on 20th January 2019 saw a huge turnout and was a big hit with members. The response has been so good that there is a proposal to hold Day Housie at least once every month. It was a ‘Magical Evening’ for our iKidz Young Readers when more than 45 kids gathered in the Library and experienced and also made magic. January IBrowse featured Ryan Fernando, the health consultant to cricketers and celebrities with his ‘Secrets of Champions’, sharing with more than a 100 plus people the secrets of how to lose all the weight we have put on during the season On 8th February 2019 Catholic Club Orphans’ Trust (CCOT) will be conducting its 11th Edition of the Annual Catholic Club Golf Tournament at the prestigious Bangalore Golf Club. iKidz Young ReadersContributed by Sameera Fernandes A Magic Evening at the IKidz Young Readers ClubIt was indeed a magic evening on Sunday, January 20th at 4pm at the Catholic Club Library. The IKidz program indeed witnessed an overwhelming surge in the attendees –enthusiastic children who were keen to have their own share of magic and excitement. Our Committee Member Jude Lobo provided a brief run through of the program. The head of our iKidz activities John Quadrous coordinated the event in its entirety and ensured all children were paying attention to gain from the session. Sameera Fernandes taught the children a ‘magical hello’ encouraging them to bring magic into their lives by wishing their parents and friends in an enchanted way. She then moderated a panel discussion with four young authors from the Chronicles of Wizardry who spoke about the book and shared some of the exciting action areas that were a must read. The student prodigies Uditi Mourya, Treya Moodithaya, Nikkita Rosalyn and Nityasree Pola also shared their experiences of writing and encouraged the IKidz members to try their hand at writing someday. This was also an eye opener to our young members to discover their own areas of interest and use the opportunities that come their way. A copy of the book is at the Catholic Club library and can be purchased on Amazon as well. Shortly after the panel discussion, Magician Satish enticed the children with simple yet lively magic tricks. The session was full of comedy, colour and lots of magic. It was such an exciting moment to see all the children eagerly watching and trying to analyze each and every move. He managed to hold their interest and kept them constantly engaged throughout the show. All children also received a magic box giving them an opportunity to try over 25 magic tricks at home. Prizes were also given for the best dressed Magical characters. The event ended with

sumptuous snacks for all. Although the event was mainly focused on the children, the parents too learnt quite a few tips and tricks at the event. Overall, the event was sensational and the entire audience were on their feet re-living childhood memories of fun and excitement. On Sunday February 17th we are planning to take our iKidz young Readers on a voyage of discovery, to Ole Mac John's farm with bird watching, lake trekking, identifying fruit trees and vegetables plants. iKidz passport holders Rs. 350 and others Rs. 400 register with Prem in the library. This will be a full day event with transport cost extra.

Books and more Our library subcommittee will start segregating our books this month, for better display and easier selection for members by author and genre. In January we purchased 15 new books, we had some great books donated to the library by Anthony Pinto - 15, Sameer Valdiya - 50 books and numerous DVD's, Kylie Ann Miller 70 Mills and Boons, Marie-Alphonse Merandez - 10 magazines, thank you all for your generosity, God Bless you for sharing your passion for reading with our members. We have a limited quantity of water proof Tote bags, for you to carry your books to and from the library, also they make great gifts, these are available with Prem the librarian for rupees one hundred each.

Lace & Turmeric:Vignettes of Old Bangalore

The Christmas season in Bangalore is always a starry-eyed blur of red, gold, and green, cocooned in crisp, cold nights, and bright, sunny days, enveloped in pealing laughter, and warm-hearted mirth from everyone you meet... It is the city’s nest hour, to me. It is also the time of year that all routine is ung out the window in wild abandon, replacing our sense of responsibility with round-the-clock parties, especially at our timeless club. (Ehem... My excuse for missing the newsletter deadline, last month.) But what I love to do at Christmas is remember Christmases past... the ones I spent as a child in this little town, and the stories that I remember from my mother, my grandmother, my aunts, uncles, and everyone I meet who grew up here. Stories of carol singing without practices, hoping for the best, drinking deep to soothe the vocal chords, nding new harmonies in uncertainty, and inventing instruments from whatever one had on hand; stories of making kulkuls around the dining table – the young, the old, the relative, the neighbour, even the odd priest who dropped in for tea – delving mechanically into the communal tray at the centre to get your ball of dough and roll your little masterpieces on whatever comb or fork you’d come armed with to join the work-party, sharing laughs, news, the latest goss, and some tea; stories of fabric shopping behind Commercial Street, scouring lean-to stores for something glittery and bright, to match the wonder and magic of the Christmas spirit you felt, and then spending time with your dressmaker ipping through magazines that relatives had sent from abroad to nd a dress pattern that was right for you (always toned down two notches by your mother because you weren’t old enough for what you thought you should be wearing, yet); stories of visiting orphanages and homes for

the the handicapped and the aged, to sing with and for those who may have had far less than you in wealth or family support, but gave you so much more in return with their unbridled delight and sunshine-smiles because you’d come to spend time with them; stories of midnight mass at Holy Ghost Church and the enchantment of its hidden stairwells leading to secret loft spaces above the altar, where the sound of the entire church exalting in song reverberated gloriously o its seemingly ancient granite walls, and its warm and amiable Redemptorists delivered the simplest, yet most profound sermons of the meaning of Christmas; stories of Santa Claus and his army of elves working hard through the month to get all good children the gifts they had asked for, on Christmas Eve, gifts like a new tin-carrier for school, or a set of fun pencils and erasers, simple things that we take for granted today... Because life then was simpler, and in so many ways sweeter.

What are YOUR stories of old Bangalore, of its seasons, of days and evenings spent at the club, of your family and its history in this city? Email me: [email protected], or message me: +91-99000-97726, and let’s sit and chat about them so that I can write them and share them with our members. I’m planning to be at the Sassy Seniors Valentine’s Day celebration, so that’s a great place to start!

iBrowseContributed by Aiona Misquita GoesJanuary @ iBrowse: 'Eating Secrets of Champions' by Ryan Fernando When Ryan Fernando walked into the Catholic Club with a huge bag of oranges, we knew we were in for a special treat! A passionate speaker on nutrition, Ryan made the session fun yet interactive and informative. Sean Pereira, who has personally experienced amazing weight loss in the recent past was a tting moderator for Ryan's session. No one type or size ts all - this was the main message, with Ryan stressing on the importance of identifying which foods were our friends and which ones were our enemies. While the book under discussion was primarily directed towards nutrition for sportspersons, there is another in the works for everyone! Ryan's presentation was followed by a very enthusiastic Q&A session where questions on a range of topics were asked and adroitly answered. He very graciously autographed copies of his books and posed for seles with our iBrowsers! And we discovered what the oranges were brought for - everyone who asked a question got a couple of 'em!
