Thanks to blue skies and the hard work of Club members, we are fortunate that we’ve had several successful events in the recent years and our financial position is stable. President’s Message

Greetings everyone,

We'll meet again / Don't know where / Don't know when / But I know we'll

meet again, some sunny day / Keep smiling through / Just like you al-

ways do / 'Till the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away.

Those are the lyrics of the Vera Lynn song popular exactly eighty years ago. The world was descending

into the darkness of a horrific war that brought devastation for many years. When put in the perspective of

that time and other challenging times, the current situation is not so bad. Our Country and our Club will

come through this! Thanks to blue skies and the hard work of Club members, we are fortunate that we’ve

had several successful events in the recent years and our financial position is stable.

Right now, in this article, I would love to be listing the dates and descriptions of upcoming events, but until

we have more information, that communication will have to wait. As soon as we get facts about when the

Club can open and restrictions that might be in place, we will pass the details along to everyone.

The nominations for Club Officer and Trustee positions should have occurred in the month of April, howev-

er our Constitution also permits nominations in May, which is the month elections shall be held. The nomi-

nating committee has a slate of candidates ready, but other candidates can still be proposed by contacting

the members of the committee. See page 10 for the list of candidates

We will not be holding our May membership meeting on May 7, but hope to hold some type of membership

meeting before the end of the month. Perhaps it will be held outdoors and with a limited agenda, such as

the Club’s elections.

For prospective folks that are in the queue to become the newest Liederkranz members, I can tell you that

we plan to schedule some extra meetings as soon as possible with the goal of expediting the process for

you.

As this newsletter is an abbreviated version and only being posted online, please pass this on to anyone

who might not have email or internet access.

More than ever, I’m looking forward to the sunny day when I can see everyone around the Club once

again!

Reservation and Dining Information: - Dining - Reserved tables are permitted in the Ballroom area. Bar & Stammtisch seating is first come. To better prepare our service & kitchen staff, we welcome all dining notice via our on-line TableAgent site found on the din-ing page of the website and in weekly emails. This is especially important for groups larger than 8 people. Occa-sionally we will use SignUp Genius for special event reservations. We prefer use of these on-line sites over phone calls. - Volunteers - Please remember your servers and bartenders are volunteers of the Club and are not paid com-pensation for their work—please support them! - First Thursday Meetings - non-members must exit the Ballroom at the start of the monthly member meeting.

Guten Tag ....This certainly has been quite a differ-

ent Spring for all of us. As many of you already know,

all the Liederkranz Chorus events and concerts have

been canceled for the rest of the season. It was a great

disappointment to have to cancel our May 2nd Spring

concert, which was going to be an exciting one. We

also had to cancel our special 140th club anniversary

choral fest we were to host on June 20.

Since we could not hold our fundraiser breakfast on

April 26th, we now have to try to sell the remainder of

our cookbooks! While we were all quarantined, I bet

your copy of the cookbook got frayed from cooking so many good German

meals that you will need to buy a new copy!!

In all seriousness, the chorus is hoping to once again start rehearsals in

September and hope many of our new members to be inducted will consider

coming on Wednesday evenings and giving us a try. It is a great way to meet

people, sing wonderful German folk songs and other choral repertoire and

become actively involved in volunteering your time and talent.

Be safe, stay healthy and keep a song in your heart!

TrusTees’ reporT My prayers go out to all affected by the COVID-19 infections, restrictions and finan-

cial impacts. We’ll get through this together – hopefully soon. We did get some projects done prior to closing the club on March 16th. The ball-

room floor was sanded and refinished, thanks to Joe E. and the volunteers from the

dance groups. I was in the club on a sunny day last week and was almost blinded

by the shine (the floor was finished just prior to the closing and there are no tables

or chairs in the ballroom.) Denny W. reworked the stall in the barroom men’s room.

This effort doubled the more private area and it can be used as a changing room.

The electrical service to the pavilion is being reworked to be run underground and

have a disconnect switch up at the parking lot level (out of the flood plain.) PPL will also be doing pole work to

connect to the new switchgear. Bunky P has done a great job of managing this project. Unfortunately we’ve had to cancel the Spring Work Day that was scheduled for April 25th. Once we are back up

and running, the Trustees will try to accomplish the various jobs/projects intended for the work day, with volun-

teers on an ad hoc basis. While we don’t have an answer on whether or not there will be a Sommerfest this year – the beloved Duck Race

will go on! If the race isn’t run at Sommerfest it will be run at the Annual Club Picnic on August 2nd. Look in the

mail for your Duck Race tickets in a few weeks.

I hope to see you all very soon. Be safe and God Bless.

Honorary Membership Notice: LLK Constitution, Article III, Sec. 7 - A member may be elevated to Honorary status after having attained the merit of the Society by reason of his/her labors in the field of music, fostering art and science or by faithfully serving the Society. The following members were read for Honorary status at the March 5 membership meeting. Voting was to take place in April, and of course that meeting was cancelled. Because we want to devote the appropriate attention to this important milestone for these honorary candidates, we will schedule their second reading and vote at an upcoming membership meeting date TBD. This may or may not be at our first meeting upon reopening. - Honorary Membership Com-mittee Please take notice of these exceptional members of the Lancaster Liederkranz: John M. Blank, Joseph A. Eckenrode, George S. Grab, William J. Klein, III, Russell K.Kuhn, Thomas Markow and Mark L. Stanavage.

Herzlich Willkommen 2020 and all the fun we will enjoy!

Hoch Liebe der Gemütlichkeit! March came in like a lamb, we celebrated Cabbage Hill day in true style. We danced and had a wonderful meal at the club. It was a great day. As we now know, dancing and singing and sharing a drink with a friend would be put on hold. The Alleweil Jung is now staying safe at home. We held our first Zoom meeting, thanks to member Charlie Gross. I loved seeing friendly faces and swapping stories. We even sang an Ein Prosit! We are exchanging emails and dance links. Many reporting dancing to Maria’s accordion music on Facebook. Providing a caring community to each other. We stay home now, so that when we gather again... no one is missing. We are all in this together. Candy Eichenser, President

MEMBERSHIP CARD POLICY - As a member, it is your responsibility to validate your membership upon en-

trance to the club either to the Door Attendant or the Bartender on duty - even if you may be a long time member.

This practice, along with signing-in of nonmembers is not meant to be an annoyance to you, but are requirements

by the PA Liquor Control Board who govern our private club status. Please be prepared to offer your membership

card each time you enter whether or not you feel the door attendant or bartender should know you. Our growing

membership makes this practice even more important. Guests should show a valid driver's license or state id

when signing in.

During this uncertain time, I just wanted to extend a heartfelt thank you

to you all. To have the support of such a strong community has made a difference; from

face mask making, to supporting local business, and just being there to check in for

emotional support. We are fortunate to have the support. Prior to all the changes we are now facing, the Alpenrose held two very successful

events at the Club: our Annual Bockbierfest March 15 - a big thank you to John and Ma-

ria for filling in to make a wonderful night; and the Mid-Atlantic Jugendfest, held on

March 9, where 13 of our Jugend members competed against clubs throughout the re-

gion. Our competitors represented the group and club with pride and grace. Those com-

petitors are;

Age 17-20: Autumn Zodet (1st place), Tanner Beck (2nd place)

Age 13-16: Avery Zodet (2nd place), Mia Hutchinson (4th place), Donna Seigel (7th place),

Aidan Fredericks (2nd place), Josh Stanavage (3rd place), Landen Peck (4th place),

Age 9-12, Keely Kieffer (5th place), Lucy Draeger (7th place), Sammy Kieffer (6th place)

Before the outbreak of COVID-19 a group of Hobby Chor singers and friends had begun

planning for this year’s Golf Outing. The majority agree that cancelling this August 14

event now in April would be premature.

If this pandemic would cause any prolonged issues in terms of folks having to remain at

home, or if social distancing for groups over a certain size continues to remain in place

into the summer, we can revisit how we want to proceed. We are crossing our fingers that

things will soon be back to normal and that we can then schedule a meeting at the

Liederkranz. The Hobby Chor is still hoping to hold our annual Golf Outing in August.

We will be monitoring how the Coronavirus situation plays out. Please stay tuned. We thank all the sponsors,

players, and volunteers who have supported us over the years to make this fundraising event successful.

Message from the Nominating Committee By Paul Stanavage

Hello fellow Liederkranz Members. Normally we would have had nominations from the floor for our Execu-tive Committee and Board of Trustee positions at the April Membership Meeting. Being that these are an-ything but normal times, and we want all our members to remain safe and healthy, that meeting had to be

cancelled. Our next best option is to put nominations in our Newsletter to get the information out to the Membership.

Lancaster Liederkranz Nominating Committee: Joe Eckenrode, Peter Knapp, and me, Paul Stanav-age. Our contact information is listed below, so you can all jump on this opportunity to serve the Lancaster Liederkranz. Here is the current list of Officers and Trustees the Nominating Committee has spoken with and they have all agreed to run: Officers: President - Glenn Yanos, Vice President - Renate McElheny, Recording Secretary - Elise Bullington, Chorus President - Linda Husler, and Treasurer - Tom Guerin Board of Trustees: Mike Reitmeyer, Mike Eyster, Bill Keays, Charles "Bunky" Perko, and Barry Waltz. Matt Trout will be serving in his second year as 2-year trustee. We would like to thank Virginia Smith for the good job she has done, and the time and energy she has spent serving as the Club’s Financial Secretary for the past 5 years. Virginia has declined the position this year but informed the committee of someone who is interested and qualified. That member is Robert "Jake" Schopf. Jake spoke with Virginia at length about the duties required and has agreed to run for Financial Secretary. Trustee, Denny Wertz has been planning on vacating his position for some time. He agreed to stick around this past year but has declined to run again. Denny has done a great job for us, and we thank him for all the time, energy and work he has done for the Club. We still needed at least one person to run for the Board of Trustees to fill the sixth position. Matt and Kate Trout recommended member Joe Rauch. Joe has been volunteering for Fests, helping with Club beer purchases, and also is part of the bar tending rotation at the Club. The Committee spoke with Joe about running for Trustee and he has accepted the nomination. Please Note: Any member of the Club in good standing who qualifies, can throw their hat in the ring to run for any position by contacting any of the Nominating Committee: Joe Eckenrode - 717-333-0549 Peter Knapp - 717-656-6487 Paul Stanavage - 717-333-2344 Once again, I would like to thank the present Officers and Board of Trustees for their time and efforts in service to the Club, and thank you to the members who have accepted nominations to serve the Lancas-ter Liederkranz in the upcoming term. I am not sure when we will be able to hold the elections, or when things at the Club can get back to "normal", but I can tell you that I really miss seeing, and getting to spend time with all of you. Please stay safe and healthy till we can all say, "I'll see you at the Club!" - Paul Stanavage

To clarify the list of positions and duties associated with the positions, I have linked the information here directly from the Club’s Constitution.

We had a beautiful day and another successful takeout event on the 16th. Thank you to all who participated. A special thanks goes to Maria for her parking lot, accordion serenade throughout the day. And of course, thank you to our president, Glenn Yanos and to all of his dedicated volunteers for organizing the experi-ence. Above, Vice President Renate McElheny serves up some schnitzel. We look forward to offering another takeout in June.

YES, THE LIEDERKRANZ DOES HAVE ITS OWN TAKE OUT

Recent work completed at the Club during our closure:

Trustee Charles “Bunky” Perko (with the help of his wife Barb and sons Justin and Nate)

Mop sink relocation – installed a new drain line and water supply so that the mop sink could be moved.

Installation of a new stainless-steel utility sink where old mop sink was located.

This is a significant improvement for Food Safety in the kitchen.

Installed new faucet in Ladies’ room sink.

Replaced tank seals on toilet in Ladies’ room. (Leak was discovered by Steve Hajko during a routine Club mainte-nance check.)

Installed a powered light in the fireplace to replace the temporary battery ones that had been installed for Easter egg sales.

Removed the ballasts and old tubes from the Liederkranz sign mounted on a pole by road. LED tubes were retro fitted into fixture. (Thanks to Joe Eckenrode for allowing use of his lift.)

Repaired dusk to dawn flood light mounted above club door entrance.

Repaired pavilion water system leaks and UV system safety solenoid valve.

Managed the project to have underground electrical service installed for the pavilion. This was a very significant SAFETY improvement. The pole by the pavilion was rotted half-way through at the ground level. The guide wire was a trip hazard during fests. If the pavilion area would ever be flooded, the power can now be turned off at the parking lot and PPL can service the pole from the parking lot.

Trustee Denny Wertz and a Team of the “Four O'clock Guys”

Power-washed the entire pavilion.

They are now getting ready to repair the pavilion roof.

After the roof is repaired, they will the repair cracks in the pavilion floor.

Members Dale Schultz & Lori DePorter

Are painting the Club entrance / lobby area.

Will also be painting the bathrooms and bar area.

Member Art Arnold

Is refurbishing the window boxes and should have them re-hung soon.

Power washed the Kitchen trash cans to remove old debris and heavy built-up grease.

He will then work on a re-building another one bar section that had been retrieved from the woods downstream from the Club after the flood last year. Last year, Art rebuilt two bar sections in the “half-timbered” style similar to many buildings that can be seen throughout Germany and Switzerland.

Trustee Barry Waltz

While all the above inside and outside jobs are in process, so is the lawn mowing equipment maintenance and the grass cutting job, as it has been doing for 32 weeks of each year.

For mowing, Barry maintains three tractors, three hand mowers, a weed whacker and blower , as well as supply-ing the fuel supply for all.

Thirty member volunteers make up four crews, each crew mowing once a week

Crews are captained by Bunky Perko, Jeff Munster/Ron Kennard, John Northup, and Tom Owsinski.

These crews are also mowing the Honberger and Andy’s trailer yards in addition to the club’s grounds.
