The musicians warm up. They begin to rehearse a traditional Tuscan melody.

CARLO (35) pours a small amount of red wine into a glass. The bottle is labeled NAPPA WINERY - CIANTI CLASSIC. He joins the musicians in singing the Italian tune.

Carlo looks around, raises the glass, and breathes in the wine's aroma. Contented, he closes his eyes.

EXT. THE HOUSE OF VITO NAPPA - MORNING

VITO NAPPA (60), a typical self-reliant Italian man in striped pajamas goes out of his house into the back yard. He yawns and awkwardly performs some exercises.

VITOHey, Badgio, my shaggy little beast

    Vito looks at his watch.

    CUT TO:

    EXT. ROAD - MORNING

A car approaches an intersection and stops. A banner hangs across it with "Benvenuti a Citta del Vino" (Welcome to Winetown")written on it.

On another sign is written "Welcome to the Wine Festival!"

A sign nearby indicates that Citta del Cinema (Movie town) is 7 kilometers away.

    INT. CAR - MORNING

  • A group of wine connoisseurs, the judges for the wine competition, is inside the car. MIKE(49), an average stone-faced American guy is driving.

Beside him is GAYLORD(45), a stout, soft, and sweaty man who is the chairman of the judges' panel. In the backseat sits a serious and focused feminist, RACHEL(47), with a GPS in her hand.

Beside her is a lively little troll, JEFF(39), with an artificial, fake smirk on his face.

    GAYLORD(with irony)

Its apparent that this is the first wine festival forthese guys. All they need to do is put up a flashing sign.

    JEFF(jokingly)

Gaylord, why have you been so damn sour the whole way here, like cheap moscato?

GAYLORDOK, Jeff, stop screwing with me!

MIKEHey, guys, if I'm not mistaken we should turn left here, yeah?

Jeff and Gaylord look at him and then at the road bewilderingly. It would be impossible to turn any other direction.

    GAYLORDApparently.

JEFFNow we have to look for our hotel out here in the middle of nowhere

    MIKEWhat's its name? The Cork?

JEFFThe Corkscrew! What the fuck kind of name is that for a hotel?

    Mike and Jeff laugh.

    2.

  • RACHELI'll check the GPS

    (pause)Crap! There's no signal.

MIKEI have a map in the glove compartment. Gaylord, can you get it for me, please?

    GAYLORD(crossly)

Dudes, what the hell's up? step on it We can ask anyone on the street about the hotel.

    EXT. ROAD - MORNING

The car turns in the direction of Winetown.

Soon the town itself appears. The car winds its way along the narrow streets. The driver often stops to ask for directions, trying to find out where their hotel is located.

EXT. HOTEL THE CORKSCREW - MORNING

The car with the wine tasters pulls up to the hotel. Near the entrance looms a huge statue of a PLASTIC CORKSCREW and a sign with the name of the hotel on it.

Gaylord is the first to get out of the car. The beaming ADMINISTRATOR(45) of the festival runs to greet him and grabs Gaylord's hand.

    ADMINISTRATOR/CESARE(with an Italian accent)

Bienvenuto! Ooops. Good morning!Welcome to our modest, though beautiful, little town! It's such a great honor that you've come!

GAYLORDThanks. But it's more likely for us a huge honor.

ADMINISTRATOR/CESAREFor us the wine festival is everything! We have waited for itfor an eternity! By the way, my name is Cesare and I'm the administrator

    3.

  • of the hotel and, in addition to ADMINISTRATOR/CESARE

    that, of the festival itself.

GAYLORDNice to meet you, Cesare. I'm Gaylord, the chairman of the jury.

    CESARE(with surprise)

    Gaylord? For real?(he changes topic)

Our festival must be a success!

MIKEThis is the first time you are having it here, right?

ADMINISTRATOR/CESAREYes! We're grateful to the Big City for giving us the opportunity toshow off our little town.Che onore!

    (pause)Ooops! Started speaking Italian again!

(pause)You know, we've put you in the best rooms in the hotel!

    MIKEWell, thank you!

The judges get their suitcases and head into the hotel, trying not to pay attention to the joyous administrator, who is trying to grab the suitcase from Rachel.

Rachel, with a stern and independent look on her face, doesn't let him.

    JEFF(to his colleagues)

I wouldn't be against having a little coffee to get my brain working.

    MIKEGreat idea.

    All go into the hotel.

    INT. HOTEL BAR - MORNING

    4.

  • The bartender cleans a set of collectible corkscrews with a bar rag. Gaylord sits down at the bar.

    GAYLORDA glass of wine, please.

    BARTENDERWine?

    (pause)Which kind, signore?

GAYLORDUmmmm. Red, only make sure its strong enough 13% or higher

Jeff looks at Gaylord in surprise.

JEFFWow, this is a great start to the day, isn't it?

The bartender takes one of the corkscrews from the collection and opens a bottle of red wine for them.

    GAYLORD(pointing)

No, that one there, please, the '91 Bolgheri Sassicaia.

    The bartender seems confused.

    BARTENDERMmm ... okay.

With disbelief written all over his face, the bartender takes a bottle down from the top shelf of the bar and wipes the dust off of it. He opens it, pours a glass, and gives it to Gaylord.

    BARTENDER(to Jeff)

    And for you, signore?

    JEFFAmericano, black.

    (beep)Coffee - American style

GAYLORDI have my reasons for drinking so early.

    5.

  • JEFFJust be careful not to spoil your tasting ability. It's critical for wine tasting to have a good sense of smell.

The bartender gives Jeff his coffee.

BARTENDERHere you are, cafe del America,-signore!

    JEFFThanks.

    (to Gaylord)Well then, what's up?

Gaylord contemplates the glass of wine.

GAYLORDBolgheri Sassicaia, 1991. Aged in oak for two years, then for sixmonths in the bottle before it's released. A deep and structured wine with excellent longevity. Probably the most sought-after wine in the world.

JEFFHey, that information is damn fascinating, but answer my question.

GAYLORDI really don't feel like talking about it.

    JEFF(thinking for a second)

You and your woman call it quits?

    GAYLORDSomething like that.

Gaylord empties the glass of wine in one gulp.

    GAYLORD(to the bartender)

    Another, please.

Jeff looks at Gaylord sympathetically -----.

    6.

  • Mike and Rachel come into the bar. Cesare obligingly runs behind them.

ADMINISTRATOR/CESAREThey've prepared their very best wines for you. You know eachwine is made through a special process, a secretpassed down from father to son.

    AT THE BAR

    CESARE(to bartender)

Salvatore, the wine and other drinksfor these people are on us.

    BARTENDER(in a quiet voice)

And the two hundred fifty dollar bottle, too?

    CESARE(faltering)

    Uh..well and that one, too.

    GAYLORD(happily)

Then I'll drink the whole thing - you're OK with that?

The waiter gives Gaylord another full glass, and Rachel sees what's happened. It's obvious she isn't pleased. Cesare also doesn't seem too happy with the fact that they are drinking such an expensive bottle of wine...

CESAREOf course! Its a wonderful wine, isn't it Gay....

Cesare snaps his finger to help him remember.

    JEFF.....Lord.

RACHELI don't like this. Wine at 9 in the morning? How in the hell will we be able to work?

    7.

  • JEFF(with a smirk)

You know he has his reasons.

GAYLORDI can't drink coffee in the morning. A glass of redwine calms my nerves.

JEFFYou know, Rachel, women have a talentfor giving us guys a heart attack.

Rachel looks at Jeff sullenly. With a severe expression on her face she grabs the opened bottle from the bartender, shoves the cork in it, and holds it tightly.

    CUT TO:

EXT. LA CITTA DEL CINEMA - MOVIE THEATER - FRONT - MORNING

The action moves to a nearby town. TWO MAINTENANCE EMPLOYEES hang a poster in front of the local movie theater: "From June 1 to 7 Marcello Nappa Film Festival."

JOANNA (25) the personal assistant to Marcello Nappa manages all the preparations for the event. Her phone rings.

    JOANNA(into the phone)

    Hey, John how are you?

INT. MOVIE THEATER - SALE - MORNING

The screen in the theater lowers. Two employees carry the podium and microphone out onto the stage.

    JOANNA(into the phone)

Marcello has got to open this festival!

Joanna is pacing back and forth with the phone held to her ear.

    JOANNA(into the phone)

Look, John, what's the difference where he is now?He has a personal life and I'm not going to meddle in it.

    8.

  • The employees position a poster with Marcello Nappa's face and excerpts from his films.

    JOANNA(into the phone)

    I've taken care of everything.(beep)

Yes, his car is at the airport. It'll take only two hours to get here.

An employee gives Joanna a sign that the projector and screen are ready for testing.

    EMPLOYEE(to Joanna)

    Go ahead and try it.

Using a remote control, Joanna points towards the film projector. Marcello's trailer for a comedy entitled "Black Waterman Diaries" begins.

An African-American gangster riding a scooter appears on the screen, getting ready to rob a McDonald's fast food restaurant, located on the water.

    JOANNA(into phone)

Yes, yes, yes, of course ... Got it, thanks, bye.

INT. VITO NAPPA'S HOUSE - MORNING

Vito puts some food on a plate. He throws a piece of pepperoni to his dog, Badgio, who barks with delight. There is a knock at the door.

Vito goes to the hallway and opens the door to see his best friend ROBERTO (55).

TITLE CARD 9AM, THE DAY OF THE FESTIVAL.

    VITORoberto! Buddy! Good morning!

    ROBERTOHi Vito!

The men shake hands and hug.

VITOCome on in! You're right on time I've made brunch.

    9.

  • ROBERTOBrunch - or maybe breakfast?

VITOWell, you know, in the city anything after 9 am we call brunch.

    ROBERTO(smiling)

... Thanks, I already had breakfast. But I could try your house special wasnt that eggs with pepperoni?

VITOYes. It's a special Italian recipe! Come on! You don'tneed to take off your shoes.

They go into the dining room.

    DINING ROOM. LATER

Vito and Roberto eat breakfast. The scrambled eggs resemble an Italian flag - pepperoni, egg whites and parsley. A small Italian flag is standing nearby on the table.

ROBERTOYou have a very big day today. Are you ready to outshine your competitors?

VITOAre you kidding me? What competitors? That blockhead Capra, or maybe the cheater Rossetti with his disgusting slop? Which one of them is competition for me?

    ROBERTO(nodding)

Pablo Nerozzi's red Cortona is decent enough.

    VITO(waving his index finger )

No, man, I've got no competition! When these tasters try my Chianti Classico, they will realize that nothing in life can taste better!

    10.

  • ROBERTOYes, I remember the taste of your Chianti ... it's unforgettable! Are you ready with a serious acceptance speech?

Vito takes a folded sheet of paper out of his pocket. The two friends laugh.

VITOPut your fork aside for a minute. I'll read it to you.

ROBERTOOkay, Vito, I'm positive that your speech is stunning. But perhaps Im not your ideal audience. Im afraid I might choke while laughing at your masterpiece!

VITOYou sure? You don't know what you're missing, my friend.

(laughs)Okay, if you really dont want to listen to my speech, Ill just pour you more coffee, OK?

    ROBERTOSure, Id love some.

    Vito pours coffee.

INT. VITO NAPPA'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - MORNING

Vito and Roberto enter the room, each holding a cup of coffee. Roberto picks up a black-and-white photograph, scrutinizing the young Vito in the picture.

VITOThat's me in 1965! Near Florence. Mygrandfather had a small house. I loved going there.

ROBERTOThats so cool ... I've never been to Florence.

Roberto puts the picture back in place.

    11.

  • Vito, I wanted you to know that ROBERTO

Marcello's film festival begins in my movie theater today.

    (beep)Your son.

    VITO(after a pause)

    Seriously? You gotta be kidding!

ROBERTOIts true, absolutely! His personal assistant Joanna is in town right now, making final preparations.

    VITO(bemused)

Well ... good, that's very good...

ROBERTOIt's good? As far as I remember, youve never met or spoken to Marcello, am I right?

    VITO(shakes his head)

Ive never even seen him. When Christina left me, she was pregnant and I didn't ever seen her again. Of course, then I behaved like a scoundrel, but she wasnt an angel either.

Vito goes to the bookcase and pulls out a photo album.

    VITOHere, Roberto, look.

Roberto walks over to Vito, who opens the album. Inside, we see a huge number of newspaper and magazine clippings about the famous film director Marcello Nappa.

VITOHere is everything, right from the beginning of his career.

ROBERTODid you collect all of this Vito?

    VITOYes, because he's my son...

    12.

  • ROBERTOYou never showed me this before. Why dont you go and see him tonight? Talk to him, you have nothing to lose.

    Vito looks at Roberto, startled.

VITO What do I tell him?

ROBERTOI dont know ... treat him to some wine.

    VITO (thinking)

Yes, wine, thats a good idea. But I'll have to think about it.

ROBERTO Think about it, but if you want to connect with him, now is the time to do it! You have until 7PM to decide.

VITOGot it, got it. Dont forget, I have the award ceremony at the wine festival at 6.30. No matter what I decide to do.

ROBERTOAh, yes, the award ceremony. You sound like youre certain you'll win!

VITOOf course, I cant think of anything but victory!

    INT. BAR HOTEL - MORNING

All of the wine competition judges listen with bored faces to the monologue of the administrator CESARE, who is showing them the entire map and schedule of the festival.

ADMINISTRATOR/CESAREYour journey will begin with the wine of Giuseppe Nani at the outskirts of our humble town. This is our first stop. Perhaps his wine will be the best, but you cant know that until the end of our tour.

    13.

  • ADMINISTRATOR'S FLASH FORWARD

We move into the winery of GIUSEPPE NANI. We see GIUSEPPE NANI(62) shaking hands and hugging all the judges. Giuseppe kisses Rachel's hand, embarrassing her.

ADMINISTRATOR/CESAREFirst, we come to the winery of Giuseppe Nani, a well-respected man and gentleman of grace. I am not informed in advance what kind of wine the host will provide to you for testing. But ..

(lowering his voice to a whisper)

...Giuseppe told me in confidence that it will be a special white wine, Montecucco.

END OF THE ADMINISTRATOR'S FLASH FORWARD

    IN THE HOTEL BAR

The judges glance at each other with indifference - they are not impressed.

Gaylord, sits - with no wine - and imagines a completely different scenario in Nani's wine hut.

    FLASH FORWARD/ GAYLORD'S IMAGINATION

The judges taste the wine that Nani has given them and exclaim with delight. Shaken, Rachel writes something down on a piece of paper, while Gaylord starts to drink right from the bottle. The other winetasters try to pull the bottle away from him, but Nani, with a satisfied smile, stops them, saying 'let him enjoy it.'

END OF GAYLORD'S IMAGINATION/ FLASH FORWARD

Jeff pokes Gaylord in the side.

    ADMINISTRATOR/CESAREVito Nappa's wine awaits you.

FLASH FORWARD OF CESARE/ POSSIBLE FUTURE

The judges are in Vito's wine hut. Nappa himself greets them - they embrace again and Vito kisses Rachel on the cheek, which causes her deep embarrassment. Gaylord takes a

    14.

  • glass of wine from the table and begins to sip it. But Vito pulls the glass away from him.

CESARE(O.S)Vito has prepared a special wine for you - even I don't know which one it is.

Vito, looking mysterious grabs a bottle of wine. The judges' eyes grow round with delight. Vito asks Karlo to pour it into glasses.

CESARE(O.S)I am sure you'll be delighted with this.

And true to his word, having tasted the wine the judges begin to jump for joy. Rachel tears pages out of her notebook with estimates, Mike falls onto a chair - senseless and exhausted, Gaylord starts to drink right from the bottle, Jeff holds his head, and finally Rachel rushes to kiss Vito.

END OF FLASH FORWARD OF CESARE/ POSSIBLE FUTURE

BACK TO the bar at the "Corkscrew".

ADMINISTRATORNo less marvelous are the wine huts of Sergio Bianca, Giovanni Capra, and other winemakers. You'll have a fabulous time in all of them. And exactly at 6.30 pm, here in the conference room....

BACK TO FLASH FORWARD OF CESARE/ POSSIBLE FUTURE

We're now heading to the conference room of the hotel, where a large number of people have already gathered. Everyone is anxious. Gaylord and company come out onto the stage. Each is holding a glass of wine. Next to them stands the administrator, Cesare, beaming. He is the first to go to the podium and begins to speak passionately.

ADMINISTRATORWe are ready to announce the winner!

BACK TO BAR OF HOTEL "CORKSCREW"

GAYLORDWell, that's it - it's clear. Let's get down to business.

    15.

  • EXT. AREA AROUND Citta de Vino - MORNING

An old solitary car sits on the side of the road.

    INT. CAR

Two American rednecks are inside - ROB(38) and CHUCK(40). Both of them are lost in thought. Chuck bites his nails. Rob notices and slaps his hands.

    CHUCK(offended)

    Hey! What do you want?

ROBStop biting those claws of yours!

    CHUCKMy nerves are shot.

ROB(gradually starting to talk louder and louder)

To hell with your nerves! You make me nervous when you gnaw on your fingers like that - you're giving me a nervous breakdown!!

    Chuck stops chewing his nails.

    CHUCKK. Got it.

ROBBetter to think about where in the hell we can get some money - cause this shit sucks!

CHUCKIt's hell to get money if you don't print it yourself...

ROB Maybe we should get some beer or wine. Get drunk and forget everything.

CHUCKNot a bad idea... But you also need bucks to get booze.

    (pause)Oh hell, I just remembered...

    16.

  • ROBWhaaaa?

CHUCKSome sort of wine festival is going on not far from here. A lot of fat cats have come up from the Big City... Can you imagine how many of them will be completely out of it, roaming around the streets?

ROBHmmm. No, we can't snatch things off people - we're not pickpockets.

CHUCKToo bad - it would help us get by. Maybe we could nick some wine.

    Rob thinks about it.

ROBHey - that's a great idea! Pat Pussycat was asking me if I had a collection of something ... like a collection of wine.

CHUCKAnd where can we find this wine collection?

ROBWhat do you mean, where? In the wine cellars.

Rob pulls out a catalog of wine collections and begins to leaf through it.

ROBPat Pussycat told me that he's ready to shell out some big bucks for a chest of wine that's been aging 30-40 years.

    CHUCKPat?

ROBYeah. I met with him on Wednesday, when he was in Sassy City. They were spoiling and pampering him a bit with Colombian tea. It was good - smelled real good.

    17.

  • CHUCKYeah - I'd like to be him right now. Relaxing and chilling out - flying high in the clouds...

Rob continues to leaf through the catalog. Chuck is lost in thought.

CHUCKWhich one is better to take? You have any idea?

ROBWell, that's easy. We need to take the one that's the most expensive. That one, for example.

He points to the Chianti Classico.

    CHUCK(reads)

"The wine hut of Vito Nappa". Rob - you have any idea how we can get in?

In answer Rob starts the car.

ROBI do. I worked there once as a handyman.

INT. ON A TROPICAL ISLAND - MORNING. HOTEL

Marcello Nappa, the extravagant director (35), sits on his bed in a luxury resort hotel. He's watching a movie on the TV in front of him. In the background beautiful KATIE (25), Marcello's lover, gets dressed. She has a fabulous body, which is apparent through her expensive lingerie.

Marcello looks out the window - a stunning view of palm trees and the sea greets him.

KATIESweetheart, you were saying something again tonight ....

    MARCELLO(staring at the screen)

Whatever it was is gone. I was drunk.... The blood moon had some sort of influence on me...

    18.

  • KATIEYour movies, your dreams, the alcohol, and reality all seem to be jumbled up and mixed together... You can't tell where one ends and the other begins. You're a genius.

MARCELLOHell. Yes about the genius part. For about a third of the night I dream about a brilliant movie - one that I have to make - but I don't remember anything in the morning. It's some sort of nightmare. You have to help me figure out what these dreams mean!

KATIEI'll try as hard as I can. You know blondes don't know everything.

    The phone rings.

INT. MOVIE THEATER IN THE CITTA DEL CINEMA - MORNING

Joanna makes a call on her cell phone. She hears the beep of the answering machine indicating that she should leave a message.

JOANNAHi, Marcello! Have you forgotten that you have a film festival opening in Citta del Cinema?

    Marcello picks up the phone.

INT. HOTEL ON A TROPICAL ISLAND - MORNING

Marcello embraces and kisses Katie's body. She is pressing up against him...

    MARCELLO (to phone)

Yes, Joanna, you've already told me that. So - I'm leaving for the airport right now.

    JOANNA (O.S) (to phone)

I can't hear you very well .... Is it OK to ask you where you are?

    19.

  • MARCELLO(kissing Katie)

In a lousy hotel on an island in the middle of the ocean. Well, not exactly in the middle ... Somewhere in the ocean .... well, somewhere between heaven and earth...

JOANNADo you remember that the festival opens at 7 tonight?

MARCELLOHow could I forget? Don't worry, honey, I'll be there on time.

Marcello hangs up and continues to kiss Katie's body.

KATIEHoney? What kind of relationship do you have with her??

MARCELLOI'm just using that word to be polite. There are just some people who are sweet, like honey.

KATIEYeah, well you've probably been involved in some sort of sweet stuff with her. When I wasn't around.

MARCELLOWhat the hell are you talking about? There's no one better than you!

    (nods toward the TV screen)

Look, there's something cool going on.

Marcello uses the remote to turn up the volume on the TV.

MARCELLOWhat a fantastic scene I put together!

Superman, armed with a Kalashnikov, shoots an alien in a Gestapo uniform.

SUPERMANYou won't stop democracy from taking root on our planet...

    20.

  • The aliens collapse.

    ALIENWe'll be back.

Montage: an alien turns into a worm and crawls into the earth, then it makes its way to the surface and turns into an evil butterfly with a fascist symbol on its wings. The butterfly flies off.

    EXT. NANI WINERY - DAY

Everything is ready for the judges' arrival. A small group of musicians awaits them.

Gaylord, Rachel, Mike, and Jeff get out of their car.

    GAYLORD(to Rachel)

I think she left me because I put on weight. She didn't tell me that to my face, but I'm almost certain that was the reason. It's true - I'm fat. I'll admit it!

RACHELPeople don't break up just because someone's put on weight. I think ...

GAYLORDI think so, too! I told her: give me one more chance, and I'll be better and work on improving myself.

JEFFFind yourself someone else. Don't worry about it. Look over there at all of those single young Italian women.

GAYLORDIt's easy for you to say 'find someone else'...

The tasters go inside Nani's winery.

    INT. NANI WINERY - MORNING

The musicians immediately begin to play an Italian melody. GIUSEPPE NANI (60) rushes to shake the wine tasters' hands.

    21.

  • NANIHello, dear guests from the Big City! Welcome to the wine hut of Giuseppe Nani.

    (singing)Nani-i-i-, o nani-i.

    GAYLORDHello, Mr. Nani.

NANIIt's such an honor for me to welcome guests like you!

JEFFWe're also happy to see you, too.

Giuseppe grabs Jeff's hand and shakes it vigorously.

NANIToday all sorts of guests will be here! I've prepared a very special wine for you. I hope that Cesare didn't tell you which one?

The committee members look around at each other.

    GAYLORDNo, of course not.

    NANI(winking)

Then you'll be really quite surprised.

The area around the wine hut is full of festival guests. Nani's assistants carry a polished box full of wine.

Smiling broadly, the musicians play well-known Italian melodies. A local ITALIAN MAN (45) tries to ask an UNKNOWN WOMAN(30) from the Big City to dance. Frightened, she says no.

We see how Gaylord looks at the couple with envy. He turns to the other members, who, with self-important expressions on their faces, taste the wine.

    JEFF(to Gaylord)

You can find a little Italian woman for yourself while you're here.

    22.

  • GAYLORDAnd she'll leave...

    A LITTLE LATER

Mike lightly swirls his glass of white wine and sips a little.

MIKEThis really isn't bad! It has a nice bouquet.

NANIOh, thank you, thank you! You've given me great hope for success.

    GAYLORDSo let's drink.

(to Nani)And what's with the wine that you have there under the table?

Nani opens his mouth in confusion, but Gaylord has already grabbed a bottle.

MIKEIf I'm not mistaken, according to the agenda we have only one sort to try.

GAYLORDDon't worry, I'll taste it outside of the parameters of the competition.

    NANI(shrugging)

I don't have anything against that.

Gaylord pours the wine into a glass and tastes it.

    RACHELHey, hey, don't forget.

Rachel takes the glass from Gaylord - she doesn't let him drink it all.

GAYLORD(wiping his mouth with his sleeve)

I get it, Rach....need to stay sober...
