Neville Smith – Corowa Historic Vehicle & Machinery Club. Our guest speaker Neville Smith, a man well known to most of us, told us of his long association with the Corowa Vehicle & Machinery Club. It began in 1985, at the sugestion of Rob Davis and Andy Johns, as part of the Apex Club of Corowa’s Tractor Pull Competitions, for entertainment during one of the very early Ferderation Festivals. I don’t think we have had such an entertaining guest speaker in quite some time at our dinner meetings. Smithy, as he is fondly known, had us all in fits of laughter with his colourful memories of how this club came about. The first venue for the tractor pull was in what is now the swimming pool car park. Thinking they only had 7 tractors the Apex members were a bit worried that it would be a bit of a flop, until a man named Cotterill turned up with a truck load of tractors and they ended up with 25 tractors competing. The following year they competed next to the Tennis Club with a special event for “Toorak Tractors”, and then following years events where held in Reynoldson’s paddock. Many other placed were tried after that. Smithy ran the Tractor Pull at the Corowa Show for four years, and the Club has won the best float at one of the Federatin Festival Parades ($1000 prize money). Neville Smith – Corowa Historic Vehicle & Machinery Club.

Our guest speaker Neville Smith, a

man well known to most of us, told us

of his long association with the Corowa

Vehicle & Machinery Club.

It began in 1985, at the sugestion of

Rob Davis and Andy Johns, as part of

the Apex Club of Corowa’s Tractor Pull

Competitions, for entertainment during

one of the very early Ferderation

Festivals.

I don’t think we have had such an entertaining

guest speaker in quite some time at our dinner

meetings. Smithy, as he is fondly known, had us

all in fits of laughter with his colourful memories of

how this club came about.

The first venue for the tractor pull was in what is

now the swimming pool car park.

Thinking they only had 7 tractors

the Apex members were a bit

worried that it would be a bit of a

flop, until a man named Cotterill

turned up with a truck load of

tractors and they ended up with

25 tractors competing.

The following year they competed

next to the Tennis Club with a special event for “Toorak Tractors”, and

then following years events where held in Reynoldson’s paddock. Many

other placed were tried after that.

Smithy ran the Tractor Pull at the Corowa Show for four years, and the

Club has won the best float at one of the Federatin Festival Parades

($1000 prize money).

Finally a Tractor Club was formed and Peter Dickins was the inaugural

President, with about 26

members.

They are now the Corowa

Historic Vehicle & Machinery

Club Inc. with 84 members

and their own clubhouse out

on land next to the Corowa

Aerodrome

They have working bees to raise money to

keep extending their clubrooms and one of

the more sucessful ways is by doing contract

fencing.

At the conclusion of the presentation, Neville

was presented with a bottle of the President’s

Muscat by the Chairman, Alan.

They do have a weekend event on June 4th & 5th that some of pur

members may like to attend, remembering of course that we will have

our Market on Sunday 5th.

Save the Date

May 27 - Fellowship Night – Corowa Theatre Company’s musical

production.

June 5 - Federation Market

June 30 – Corowa Rotary Club Change Over

Winners are Grinners.

This week’s lucky winner of the President’s Muscat

was Janet Dickins and the “Chook Lotto” was won

by Neil Davis, but unfortunately Neil drew the

Queen of Hearts from the brand new pack of cards.

Working with Children Check.

Following the discussion at our last meeting please find following the

link to the NSW Working with Children Check.

https://www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/working-with-children/working-

with-children-check

It doesn’t take long to complete the online form aqnd for volunteers it’s

free. Once complete you just need to take the form and your chosen

identification down to the RMS in Corowa. It is becoming increasingly

important and more regulated that all members have this check

completed. It is required for any one-on-one interaction with children.

This means that all host parents will need a Working with Children

Check and, at the other end of the scale, even manning the gate at the

market will require one as it is quite possible for a child (under 18) to

enter the Rotary Market without a parent and you may be the sole

person on the gate at the time.

Once you have your number could you let Margaret or Meredith know

the number and the expiry date please?

Please let Meredith know if you have any problems with the link, she is

more than happy to come and help.

Foundation Donations and Tax Deductibility

Treasurer David Potts has sent this in to enable members to be aware of tax deductibility of donations to Rotary Foundation

District or Club and/or Contributions to the Endowment Fund are not tax deductible Individual/Business or Club donations to the Australian Rotary Foundation Trust are tax deductible.

These two funds have different accounts so please ensure you donate to the correct account if you want a tax deduction.

Details of account details will be on the club’s website.

Rib Ticklers

Only in America….

I was driving to work today and saw a woman driving down the road

with her hazard lights on...

At least she's honest.

Do you want to know why married women weigh more?

Single women go home, see what's in the fridge and go to bed.
