This 1898 view northwest from the Southold Presbyterian Church steeple shows the corner of Horton and Main, and the home in the center (named “The Anchorage”) of Reverend Epher Whitaker, long time Southold Pres-byterian minister. To the left the steeple and cross of the original Saint Patrick Church is seen through the leaves (see page 7). This is one of the many photos in the little booklet sharing the cover. This 1898 picture of the William Albertson home on the southeast corner at Youngs Avenue (then Railroad Avenue) and the Main Road. This beautiful old Victorian home was later purchased by the town and essentially became “Town Hall”.

This building was originally built as the First Southold Academy school and stood directly across the street from the Southold Presbyterian Church on the Main Road in Southold. This 1898 photo show a modified structure and the front door of the first Saint Patrick Roman Catholic Church.

Looking south, this 1898 view is Southold’s future monument turn in front of the American Legion. The little patch of grass in the foreground will become the land that the Civil War monument (named “At Parade Rest”) now stands. This small plot is owned and maintained by the Southold Park District.

Southold’s First Universalist Church

. Built in 1837,

the building housed several historical treasures

including a pipe organ and an Edith Mitchell Prellwitz mural

valued at $80,000.

However, all was lost in a March 2015 blaze.

There are plans to rebuild as soon as possible.
