Atitsheart,ThreeSummersisastoryaboutinclusionandharmony,andit’sbeenajoytoseethosesentimentsplayedoutduringthemakingofthefilm.Wehopethatsenseofgoodwillcanbesharedbyeveryonewhoseesit.FROMTHEDIRECTORBENELTONTheideaforThreeSummerscameaboutduringoneofmyfamilytriptotheFairbridgeFolkFestivalinWA.Iwassittinginthebartentdoingsomepeoplewatching,there’ssucharichtapestryofhumanityatthesesortsoffamilymusiceventsandsomuchcomedy.Peoplefromdifferentwalksoflifesuddenlylivinginafieldtogetherwithonlysheetsofcanvasandpolyesterbetweenthem.Everybody’sequalinthequeuefortheportaloos!Italsostruckmethatwhilethefestivalneverseemedtochangethepeopleattendingitsurelymust.Oneyear’ssweetbuskingkidswouldbenextyear’sgrumpygothteens.Youngloverswouldcomebackasmarriedcouples,thenmaybedivorcees.Soitoccurredtomethatthiswouldbeagreatstructureforamultistoryensemblecomedy.FollowingagroupofFestivalFolkacrossthreesummers.Meetingthemforjusttwodayseachyearandseeinghowtheychangedandwhattheylearned.Acomiccelebrationofoursharedhumanitywartsandall!Acollectionofinterconnectedstoriesallrevolvingaroundacentralmisfitromance.Probablythemostsignificantofthoseotherstoriesformepersonallyisthatoftherefugeeboy,Jafaar.MyfatherwasaboyrefugeehavingfledfromNaziGermanytotheUKandI’manimmigrantmyself,sounderstandwhatit’sliketobeontheoutsidelookingin.Ilovethatthisstoryalsoconcernsmusicians.Imarriedabassplayerandlivemusic’salwaysplayedabigpartofmylife.I’vebeenaroundgigsalot,evendoingabitofroady-ingformywifeinMelbournepubsintheearly90’s!I’vealsodonethebooksformusicalswithQueenandAndrewLloydWebber,soacomedysetatamusicfestivalwasaprettygoodfitforme.IthoughtofincludingtheThereminbecausemybrotherinlawplaysitandIalwaysknewitcouldbeveryfunnyonfilm.MostmusiciansIknowareabitpuristabouttheirartandthemismatchromancebetweenaThereminplayingTechnogeekandanearthy,rootsyfiddleplayingfolkchickstruckmeasagreatmeetingofopposites.Greatforromantictension!Itwasthenjustamatteroffindingtherightactorstoplaythem.IcastRebeccaBreedsasKeeveyveryearlyintheprocess.ShewasexactlythetypeofpersonIhadinmindwhenIwrotethepart,honest,naturalandwithawickedsenseofhumour.FromherfirstauditionIabsolutelyknewIdidn’tneedtolookanyfurther.CastingRolandtookabitlonger.Findingsomeonewhocouldchannelanirritatinglypuristgeekinesswhilststillplayingaromanticleadwasatoughcombination.RolandistheonenonAussiecharacterinthemovieandIoriginallymadethecharacterEnglishlikeme.InfactRobertSheehanauditionedwithabrilliantEnglishaccentandIcasthimonthat.ButaswetalkedmoreabouttherollitjustseemedobvioustomakeuseofhisnaturalIrishbrogue.NotleastbecausehisgenuineIrishnessgavemeagreatfoilforKeevey’scrowdpleasingAussie“Irish”folkband.Alovelyextracomicelementtoaddtotheirstory.It’swonderfulwhenworkingwithgreatactorsinspiresthescript.Andasfortherestofthecast!WellhowluckywasI?Greatcomicactingisaboutabsolutecommitmenttocharacter.Thesillierthelineorsituation,themorehonestthedeliveryneedstobe.Withcomedyit’sgottocomefromtheheartandaswriteranddirectoritwassheerjoytoworkwithactorswhobroughtsuchexuberantnaturalismtotheircharacters.
IwrotethepartsofQueenietheradiohostandHenrytheMorrisDancerverymuchwithMagdaSzubanskiandMichaelCatoninmindsoyoucanimaginehowIfeltwhentheycameonboard!AsIwaswithallthemembersofthisstellerensemble.ThewholecastwasajoyandIcanhonestlysaythatfromthemomentwestartedshootingitwasimpossibletoimagineanyoneelseinanyoftheroles.JohnWaters,whoplaysKeevey’sdadEamon,isalsoabrilliantsingerandmusician,andthemomentheagreedtodothefilmIwantedtoputasonginforhim.It’stheonlypurelymusicalmomentinthefilmandhedoesitsomovingly.Hardtobelieveagalewasblowingoutsideandwealmosthadtoclosetheproductiondownwhenthesafetyofficersawpartsofthemarqueetentliftingfromthewind.SomehowJohnstillmadeitfeellikeanintimateroom.Rebeccaalsoturnedouttobeagreatsingerandhadalotoffunrecordinghernumberswiththeband.Weonlyplaysnippetsinthemoviebutthat’sherownvoiceandsheevenmasteredsomeIrishdancestepsforuswhichisn’teasywhenyoualsohavetomimesomeinspiredfiddleplaying!Filminginthesamelocationasthefestivalthatinspiredthemoviewasarealprivilegeandquiteunusual.Itmeantwewereabletolinktruelocationfootagewithourfictionalnarrative.WeshotforthreedaysattheactualfestivalwithasmalldocumentarysizecrewincludingourCinematographerKatieMillwrightandProductiondesignerClaytonJauncey.Andsowhenwereturnedtothelocationwithouractorsandfullcrewafewmonthslateritfeltlikehome.ItwasalogisticalnightmareforClaytonbecauseitmeanthehadtoreverseengineerthedesignofthefestival,butI’mthrilledwiththewaythedocumentaryfootagefitsintothefilm.Itreallylookslikeourcharacterswerethere.Tostagesomethingofthatscalewouldhavebeenimpossiblewithourtightbudgetand,evenifwe’dhadtheresources,itwouldn’thavelookedhalfasgood.ButnoneofitwouldhavebeenpossiblewithoutthesupportofthepeopleinandaroundMandurah,PinjarraandFairbridgeitself.Allourbackgroundartistscamefromthesurroundingregionandtherewereplentyofthem!Allgivingoftheirtimeandtheirpassionsimplyfortheloveofseeingthisstorytold.Thelocalindigenouscommunitywerealsoonboardfromtheoutset.SinceoneofthecentralstoriesinthefilmisanAboriginalone–aclashofdanceculturesshallwesay!-Icouldn’tpossiblyhaveapproachedthispartofthemoviewithouttakingadviceandguidancefromtheBindjarebcommunity.LocalelderKoodahCornwallgaveimportantculturalfeedbackfromtheearlydraftofthescript,alongwithawonderfullywarmwelcometohistraditionalland.
OntheeveningbeforethefirstdayoftheshootallthecastandcrewjoinedtheBindjarebMiddarDanceGroupinaChittyChittydanceinthesmokeofouropeningfireceremony.Butgettingthefirestartedinthefirstplacewasanhourlongtestofmyinferiorbushskills(andalltheotherwhitemalespresent),muchtotheamusementofthesurroundingringofwomen.AwinkandanodbetweenKeltonPellandKoodahshouldhavebeenenoughtoletusknowthatallthetechniqueintheworldwon’tcompensateforgreenwood!
CreatingafilmthatcelebratesAustraliancommunitywouldn’thavebeencompletewithoutincludingasoundtrackthatreflectedtherichdiversityoflocalmusic.Mywifemadetheinitialbroadselectionforme,shehasmuchbettertastethanIhaveandawonderfulearforthecontemporaryscene.Thekidshelpedtoo,throwinginsuggestions.Oneofthemostsatisfyingaspectstothewholeeditingprocesswastryingoutdifferentideasandfittingthetrackstothestories.Itwasanabsolutelabourofloveand,inkeepingwiththespiritofthefilm,themusiccommunitycametogetherandeveryartistweapproachedagreedtoallowustousetheirtrack.
THEMUSICWhoeversaidmusicwasthefoodoflovedidn’tplaythetheremin
Originallyknownastheetherphone,thereminophone[ortermenvox,thetheremin,isanelectronicmusicalinstrumentcontrolledwithoutphysicalcontactbythethereminist(performer).ItisnamedafteritsSovietinventorLeonThereminwhopatentedthedevicein1928.
Theinstrument'scontrollingsectionusuallyconsistsoftwometalantennasthatsensetherelativepositionofthethereminist'shandsandcontroloscillatorsforfrequencywithonehand,andamplitude(volume)withtheother.Theelectricsignalsromthethereminareamplifiedandsenttoaloudspeaker.
ThethereminwasusedinmoviesoundtrackssuchasSpellbound,TheLostWeekendandBernardHerrmann’sTheDayTheEarthStoodStill.Thishasledtoitsassociationwitheeriesituations.Thereminsarealsousedinconcertmusic(especiallyavant-gardeand20th-and21st-centurynewmusic)andinpopularmusicgenressuchasrock.
Thereminsandtheremin-likesoundsstartedtobeincorporatedintopopularmusicfromtheendofthe1940sandthishascontinued,withvaryingpopularity,tothepresent.
TheBeachBoys1966singleGoodVibrations-thoughitdoesnottechnicallycontainatheremin–isthemostfrequentlycitedexampleoftheinstrumentinpopmusic.Thesongactuallyfeaturesasimilar-soundinginstrumentinventedbyPaulTannercalledaTannerin.Uponrelease,thesinglepromptedanunexpectedrevivalinthereminsandincreasedtheawarenessofanalogsynthesisersInresponsetorequestsbytheband,MoogMusicbeganproducingtheirownbrandofribboninstrumentswhichwouldmimicthesoundofatheremin.
JimmyPageofLedZeppelinusedavariationofthetheremin(minustheloop)duringperformancesofWholeLottaLove.TheRollingStonesalsousedtheinstrumentonthealbumsBetweentheButtonsandTheirSatanicMajestiesRequest.
